This week in Android: Huawei is in hot water

We could pretend there was another top story this week, but that would be ridiculous. Huawei is in trouble, as the United States has formally indicted the company and its CFO with 13 different counts.  These charges include money laundering, obstruction of justice, and sanction violations. Meng is currently awaiting extradition to the United States to face these charges, and China has respondedHuawei is kind of a big deal in China, which means it’s a big deal for the U.S.

In other news, Meizu and Vivo are both looking to bring buttonless and portless phones to the masses. We’re not so sure that’s a good idea, but Apple seems to be leaning that way as well. Frankly, that scares us — we all know what happens when Apple does something drastic in the smartphone market.

Meanwhile, Facebook is in trouble with Apple, Apple is in trouble with investors, and Xiaomi is in trouble because of Samsung.

Here are your top stories for the week

1:55 – Huawei is facing a 13-count indictment including bank fraud by the U.S.

The U.S. has taken a firm anti-Huawei stance for the past few years, and now we know why. China is responding, but should we worry?

30:00 – Want a phone with no ports or proper buttons? That’ll be $1,300, please

The front and back of the Meizu Zero. Meizu

Meizu (and Vivo) are pushing forward to a portless future, but we’re not so sure that’s a good thing. Actually, we’re pretty sure it sucks.

42:25 – Gary Explains: How much RAM does your phone REALLY need in 2019?

Your RAM determines how many apps you can have open simultaneously on your phone. But how much is enough? Please, let Gary explain.

Meanwhile, here are some stories we couldn’t cover on the podcast

Report: 2018 premium smartphone market grew 18%, here’s what that could mean

Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

  • The premium smartphone market grew by 18 percent last year as compared to the previous.
  • The ultra-premium smartphone market is dominated by Apple with 80 percent share.
  • This data suggests that consumers are ready to pay more for smartphones, but buy fewer smartphones overall.

Venerable market research organization Counterpoint just published some stats on the premium smartphone market of 2018. According to Counterpoint, the premium smartphone market grew by 18 percent last year as compared to the previous.

This is especially notable when you consider that, in the same report, Counterpoint says the overall smartphone market declined by about three percent.

For clarity, Counterpoint groups smartphones into three categories based on wholesale pricing (i.e. not retail pricing): budget (<$200), mid-range ($200-$400), and premium (>$400). Thus, the 18 percent figure refers to all phones with wholesale pricing at $400 or more.

Refer to this chart below to see how the data looks:

Counterpoint

Additionally, within the premium category, Counterpoint breaks that down into sub-categories: affordable premium ($400-$600), standard premium ($600-$800), and ultra-premium ($800+).

The ultra-premium segment is dominated by Apple, with over 80 percent of that market. This is due to the high prices of its Apple iPhone X, XS, and XS Max smartphones. The other 20 percent is dominated by Samsung, specifically the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, with a smattering of other phones thrown in (such as the Google Pixel 3 XL).

Editor’s Pick

In fact, Apple dominates 51 percent of the entire premium segment (>$400) altogether, with Samsung owning about 22 percent, followed by Huawei at 10 percent. The final 17 percent is made up of various manufacturers, most of them Chinese (Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus).

It should be noted that OnePlus is making serious gains in the affordable premium category ($400-$600). Although Apple still dominates the affordable premium segment, OnePlus’ success around the world — most notably in India — makes it the fastest-growing OEM in the premium segment.

What does all this data mean?

What does all this mean for you, smartphone consumer? It means that consumers are willing to spend more money on their smartphones, which is why we are seeing more and more devices with a retail price near (or even above) the $1,000 mark. However, the three percent drop in the overall market also means that people are buying fewer smartphones.

Editor’s Pick

In other words, we are OK with spending a lot of money on a phone, but we won’t be buying one every two years like the industry has expected us to over the past decade.

With that in mind, the industry as a whole is likely to start trying to convince consumers in developed nations that an “affordable premium” smartphone is our cheapest option. That’s why the iPhone XR is priced “affordably” at over $700, and we expect similar pricing for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10. Meanwhile, in developing nations like India and China, smartphone pricing will be more in the mid-range category with retail prices below $600, and in emerging markets like Africa, smartphones will fall squarely in the budget category.

We are OK with spending a lot of money on a smartphone, but we’ll be buying them less frequently.

Ultimately, this data suggests that the smartphone industry’s plans are working, in that we are all OK with spending way more on a smartphone than we would have five years ago. What we have yet to see is whether or not this strategy will pay off in the long run. Weak sales figures from Apple and Samsung suggest one of two things: the plan isn’t working or the plan is going through some growing pains as it settles in.

What do you think? Are you glad that there will be plenty of high-end options for smartphones coming in the future for you to buy once and hold onto for a long time, or were you a bigger fan of paying less for a phone but buying them more often? Let us know in the comments.

NEXT: Yes, Apple, the slowing smartphone market affects you, too

This week in Android: Honor View 20 and MWC 2019 preview

Our Honor View 20 review is in, and boy does this phone check a lot of boxes. It’s not the first phone we have seen with a punch hole screen and 48 megapixel camera, but it is by far the most gorgeous. The Honor 8 started the 15 layer-glass design, but the Honor View 20 is by far the most beautiful implementation. And the phone itself is no slouch either — check out the full review to learn why.

Plus, we detail a couple of OEMs that will bring 5G phones to MWC. Huawei unveiled its new 5G modem recently, and now it plans to debut the world’s first folding 5G phone at MWC. Plus, LG says it will have a 5G phone with a vapor cooling chamber and possibly some kind of gesture control on board. Add to that a couple of phones with no buttons or ports, and MWC is going to be a busy week.

Finally, as if that wasn’t enough, we have thought pieces about the Google Play Store, dumb smart things, and going all-in on Chromebooks for work.

Here are your top stories for the week

02:00 – Honor View 20 review: A hole-in-one!

The Honor View 20 is hands-down one of the most gorgeous devices we have seen. But is it just a pretty picture?

05:30 – Xiaomi reveals foldable phone prototype: Is this the cheap one we’ve been waiting for?

Prepare yourself for the world’s first double folding phone. That’s not a typo, and has been thoroughly fact checked.

20:40 – Google Play still has a clone problem in 2019 with no end in sight

Google Play has clones and copies aplenty, and there actually isn’t all that much that Google can do about it.

34:15 – Is it dumb that everything is “smart?”

Everything at CES was smart this and smart that, but do we really need everything to be smart?

49:00 – One-month test: Can a Chromebook replace my main computer?

Edgar Cervantes took it upon himself to pack up the Windows and Mac PCs for a month to try exclusively using the Google Pixel Slate. It went better than he expected.

Meanwhile, here are some stories we couldn’t cover on the podcast

Huawei reveals multi-mode 5G modem, confirms 5G phones and foldable phones (or both at the same time) at MWC

Huawei Balong 5000 multi-mode 5G modem.

5G and foldables will be all over MWC this year, and Huawei is joining the party!

LG to launch 5G phone with vapor chamber cooling, big battery, at MWC

LG is launching a 5G phone of its own, with vapor chamber cooling, which is not as righteous as we originally suspected.

Are Android updates getting faster? Let’s look at the data

Have you noticed that your phone is getting updates faster? You’re not alone.

Ugh, Android Q could give carriers more powerful ways to SIM lock phones

Carriers may be able to control your phone in new and exciting ways with these new code commits to Android Q.

LG teases touchless interface for upcoming smartphone

Ugh, touching your phone is soooooo 2018, at least if LG has anything to say about it.

Vivo Apex 2019 has a full-screen fingerprint reader, no ports or buttons

Finally, we have a pair of phones (including this one from Meizu) that think buttons and ports are also a bit 2018 for their taste. Not sure we agree.

How to Schedule Your Posts in WordPress (Step by Step)

Did you know that WordPress has the ability to schedule your posts to be published at a future time? This extremely useful feature is slightly hidden which is why many beginners don’t even notice it.

By scheduling your posts, you never have to worry about publishing your articles at a specific time. You can finish writing and schedule them to go live on the day and time that you choose.

In this article, we will show you how to easily schedule WordPress posts step by step and share some bonus tips to use WordPress scheduled posts like a Pro.

Schedule posts in WordPress

Why Schedule Posts in WordPress?

To create a successful blog, the best strategy is to plan your editorial calendar and publish articles on a regular basis.

That’s where schedule posts feature comes in handy. You can write your articles at your own pace and get ahead on your editorial calendar. Once you finish writing, you can schedule the post to be published at a specific date and time.

Another reason to schedule your posts is to benefit from peak traffic hours. There is a certain time in a day when each website gets the peak of their users. By publishing at that time, you can leverage existing traffic to increase your page views.

Now if you live in a different time zone than your readers, then it can be a problem. Imagine having your peak time as 3 a.m. where you live. Scheduling posts can be very handy for this.

Scheduling posts also comes in handy when you are going on vacation. You can simply schedule your blog posts and enjoy your holidays without worrying about writing and publishing content.

Now that you understand the benefits, let’s take a look at how to actually schedule your blog posts in WordPress.

How Do You Schedule a Post in WordPress?

It is easy to schedule WordPress posts if you know where to look. The option to schedule blog posts is not easily noticeable.

Once you have finished writing your blog post, you need to look under the ‘Document’ tab in the right column of the edit screen.

Under the ‘Status & Visibility’ panel, you need to click on the ‘Immediately’ link next to ‘Publish’ option.

WordPress post scheduling option

This will show you a date and time picker. You can select the date and time when you want to publish this post.

You can select a future date and time to schedule your article in WordPress.

You can also select a past date using the same tool to back date your blog post.

When you select a future date, you will notice that the publish button at the top will change into ‘Schedule…’.

Publish button changed into Schedule

Simply click on the Schedule button and WordPress will schedule your post.

The scheduled posts will be automatically published on the date and time you choose.

How to Schedule WordPress Posts in Classic Editor

If you are using the classic WordPress editor, then we highly recommend you to start using the new WordPress block editor, called Gutenberg.

The new WordPress editor is incredibly fast, modern, intuitive, and helps you create better content for your blog.

However, if you still want to use the older classic editor, then here is how you would schedule posts in WordPress.

Once you are done writing your post, look under the ‘Publish’ meta box in the right column of the edit screen and click on the ‘Edit’ link next to ‘Publish immediately’ option.

Change when to publish a post in WordPress

It will now show you the date and time options. Go ahead and enter the date and time when you want to publish your blog post and click on the OK button.

Select schedule date and time in classic editor

You’ll notice that the blue ‘Publish’ button will now change into ‘Schedule’. Go ahead and click on the schedule button to save your changes.

WordPress will now publish your blog post on the date and time you entered.

Troubleshooting WordPress Scheduled Posts

As your website grows, you will be regularly managing and scheduling WordPress posts. Following are some handy tips that will help you efficiently manage your scheduled posts in WordPress.

How do I use my own timezone in WordPress?

You need to change WordPress timezone settings, so that it uses your preferred timezone to publish scheduled posts.

How to view all scheduled posts in WordPress?

Simply go to Posts » All Posts page in your WordPress admin and then click on the ‘Scheduled’ link above the posts table. It will show all scheduled WordPress posts in the queue.

What to do if WordPress scheduled posts missed schedule?

To run scheduled tasks, WordPress uses a system called WP Cron. If the cron is unable to run due to a misconfiguration on your WordPress hosting server, then your scheduled posts will miss the schedule and won’t be published.

If you notice that your blog is affected by this, then you can install WP Missed Schedule plugin.

To learn more, see our article on how to fix the missed schedule post error in WordPress.

How to unschedule a WordPress post?

You can unschedule a WordPress post by editing the post and changing its status from ‘Scheduled’ to ‘Draft’.

In the new default WordPress editor, you will find the option to switch to draft at the top. In the classic editor, you will find it under the publish meta box.

Unschedule WordPress post

After you have changed a scheduled post to a draft, you can continue working on it, or you can publish it right-away if you want.

Can I also schedule WordPress pages?

Yes, you can schedule a WordPress page just like you would schedule a normal blog post.

Can I schedule changes to a published post or page in WordPress?

By default, you cannot schedule changes to a post or page you have already published. Any changes you make to a published post will become live as soon as you save it.

However, you can use the Tao Schedule Update plugin to make scheduled content updates.

For more details, please see our tutorial on how to schedule content updates in WordPress.

We hope this article helped you learn how to easily schedule your blog posts in WordPress. You may also want to see our guide on how to do keyword research for your WordPress blog to find blog post ideas and get more traffic.

This week in Android: It’s weird phone week

We got to play with a lot of cool tech at CES 2019, but little was cooler than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Qualcomm had a reference device sporting the new SoC and we were able to put it through its paces, including our very own Speed Test G. The results are impressive.

In other big news this week, we found out Motorola is planning on bringing back the Razr phone, made famous in the mid 2000s. We don’t know a lot about the phone itself, but we can make some guesses based on a patent from August of last year.

Plus, we look ahead at the future of LG and OnePlus, including a new peculiar accessory for LG. Also, we have good news and bad news about Huawei’s security.

Here are your top stories for the week

Hands-on: Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2 now features GPS, HR, and Google Pay support

Some of the most fashionable smartwatches in Fossil’s huge wearables empire comes from Kate Spade, the New York-based fashion company. Today, Kate Spade is announcing a refreshed Wear OS smartwatch called the Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2.

A big complaint users had with last year’s Kate Spade watches was that they were lacking in hardware features compared to the competition. Thankfully the company fixed that with this year’s lineup — the Scallop Smartwatch 2 now features built-in GPS, a heart rate sensor, a 3ATM water resistance rating, and NFC for Google Pay support. This is great news for users who don’t want to sacrifice features for aesthetics.

The design certainly hasn’t been neglected though — each Scallop Smartwatch 2 not only features the iconic spade icon on the top of the watch face, that spade icon also acts as a quick way to monitor your heart rate. And when the spade is tapped, a new heart animation appears before the watch turns on the heart rate sensor.

Of course, like the first generation Scallop watches, these new models also feature the “choose your look” app that lets you match your watch face to the outfit you’re wearing.

As for the tech specs, the Scallop Smartwatch 2 comes with a 300mAh battery, a 42mm stainless steel case, 16mm strap lugs, and 4GB of on-board storage.

Overall, the Scallop Smartwatch 2 looks and feels like a proper sophomore product. It takes all the things we liked most about the first generation and brings more advanced features, which will certainly make it appeal to more users.

If you want one of these on your wrist, the Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2 goes up for pre-order today and will be available in-store and online at katespade.com in late January 2019.

New watch faces for Fossil Sport and Gen. 4 Fossil watches

Fossil has another announcement today, this time for its Fossil Sport and fourth-generation Fossil smartwatches. The company is launching three new watch faces designed by marathoner, model, and entrepreneur Candice Huffine.

The watch faces, shown below, are meant to spread positivity and empowerment, and all feature motivational phrases chosen by Huffine.

Be sure to stay tuned to Android Authority for more CES 2019 coverage!
