Launchpad, Google’s startup acceleration engine, has a new Bay area home

Google

At 543 Howard Street in San Francisco, Google is opening up a new “innovation space” that will be the home of Launchpad, Google’s startup accelerator.

The new workspace is meant to act as a hub for startups focused on AI solutions within various industries, including health, finances, and social services. At the new location, startup teams can meet with Googlers and other professionals to hash out ideas, meet with members of the community, or meet with each other.

Although 0ur world is more connected than ever, Google is of the belief that getting everyone into one room working together is how innovation truly happens. Plus, having a dedicated space in San Francisco will allow tech startups to have an area to meet with community members who will be most affected by the work these startups are doing.

Editor’s Pick

Aside from AI startups, the new space will also be used for various developers and designers to workshop ideas as well as serve as a hub for industry-wide Developer Relations’ diversity and inclusion efforts.

If you look in the photo above, you can see the motto of the space written right on the walls: “We must continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.”

Later this year, Google plans to open at least two more locations in Singapore and Lagos.

US Senate Democrats want another hearing for the T-Mobile-Sprint merger

  • Five U.S. Senate Democrats called for a hearing for the T-Mobile merger with Sprint.
  • The senators want the hearing to look into the potential impact of the merger.
  • There are concerns that the merger could lead to higher prices, fewer choices, and stifled growth.

In a letter sent to two top members of the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, five U.S. Senate Democrats called for a hearing on the potential effects of the proposed merger between T-Mobile and Sprint.

The letter brought up concerns that the merger could lead to higher prices, fewer choices, and less flexibility when you want to switch carriers. There’s also concern that the merger could impact low-income consumers since T-Mobile and Sprint are also competitors in the prepaid front.

The senators also want to look into what impact the merger might have on 5G deployment.

Editor’s Pick

T-Mobile and Sprint previously argued that their combined resources would enable a faster and more efficient 5G rollout, along with better coverage and speeds. However, each carrier already talked up progress on their respective 5G networks. In an interview with Android Authority during CES 2019, Sprint even said it’s prepared to go it alone should its merger with T-Mobile fall through.

Interestingly, the five senators brought up AT&T’s failed attempt to acquire T-Mobile back in 2011. At that time, the U.S. Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) found that such a merger would harm competition.

The U.S. Senators are nervous about the proposed merger and want to take a second look.

Funny enough, Sprint was one of the many voices that spoke out against the attempted merger. At the time, Sprint argued that the AT&T merger with T-Mobile would stifle growth and hurt the wireless industry. Those are the same concerns that folks have today with the merger between T-Mobile and Sprint.

The senators ended the letter by attributing the wireless industry’s progress over the years to increased competition.

“It was only when new entrants arrived, in part because of greater access to spectrum, that the wireless revolution arrived, dramatically driving down prices and pushing cell phones into the pockets, purses, and palms of most Americans. In 2019, we cannot afford to move backwards.”

Editor’s Pick

Things have hit somewhat of a standstill as of late in regards to the T-Mobile-Sprint merger. T-Mobile already received approval from its majority shareholder, Deutsche Telekom, in October 2018. However, the partial U.S. government shutdown meant that the FCC did not fully operate for 35 days. It also meant that the FCC did not continue its decision process on the merger.

The U.S. Senate secured enough votes to pass a three-week funding bill. The bill will fully re-open the federal government and fund it through February 15. The FCC might wait until a more long-term funding bill gets passed until it returns to the decision process.

Android Authority reached out to T-Mobile and Sprint for comment on the letter and will update this post if we hear back.

Soon, you might be able to use Google Duo on the web

So far, using Google Duo has been limited to smartphones, tablets, and the majority of Chromebooks. In the near future though, the Google Duo video chat service could work on your laptop or desktop computer through your internet browser.

This new rumor comes from an anonymous source speaking with 9to5Google. According to the source, the web version of Duo will work in the Google Chrome browser (naturally) as well as other competing browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari.

Since the service will be browser-based, we can assume there will be browser notifications for incoming calls and other alerts.

Editor’s Pick

However, it’s unclear how fully-functional the web version of Duo will be. For example, we don’t know if it will support the “knock knock” feature or the popular video messaging feature.

The anonymous source claims that we should see Google Duo for the web at some point in the coming weeks.

Google recently brought Messages (formerly known as Android Messages) to the web, which is one of its other consumer-focused messaging services. With Google Duo and Messages both available via a browser, it should encourage user adoption. That’s good news for Google, as other messaging services — especially those owned by Facebook, which are joining forces — are way ahead of the game.

What do you think? Will you use Google Duo on the web if and when it arrives? Let us know in the comments!

Attack on Titan: Assault is up for pre-registration on the Play Store

Are you patiently waiting for the fourth season of Attack on Titan? You might want to look at Attack on Titan: Assault, the mobile incarnation of the popular anime series.

Previous Attack on Titan games for consoles and handheld systems were open-world action games that let you explore the world and fight Titans in real time. Attack on Titan: Assault still lets you explore the world in real time, but fights are now turn-based with quick time events showing up here and there.

Attack on Titan: Assault also features a card-building mechanic. Characters like Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert, and many more exist in the form of cards. You can then use the cards to assemble your team.

It’s worth paying attention to who’s on your team. Certain combinations, such as the 104th Trainees and Squad Levi, trigger special bond abilities during battle. You can also upgrade and get equipment for each card, further increasing a character’s abilities in fights.

Editor’s Pick

In addition to a single-player mode, Attack on Titan: Assault also lets you play alongside and against other players. Finally, the game pulls various locations like Shiganshina, Trost, Calaneth, the Forest of Giant Trees, and more from the anime series.

You can pre-register Attack on Titan: Assault on the Play Store at the link below.

T-Mobile could launch its long-awaited free TV streaming service in weeks

For well over a year now, we’ve been awaiting the launch of the long-gestating T-Mobile TV streaming service. Now, according to a rumor originating from Cheddar, that day could be only weeks away.

According to Cheddar, the T-Mobile TV service — the name of which is not yet known — will be free, ad-supported, and show both live and pre-recorded content. T-Mobile customers will be able to watch the service on their smartphones, tablets, or other internet-connected devices.

To be clear, this likely is not the separate, “disruptive TV service” T-Mobile CEO John Legere talked about last year. This service will be more akin to AT&T’s Watch TV service or the now-defunct Go90 app from Verizon, whereas we assume the “disruptive” service will be more along the lines of something like YouTube TV, which aims to replace cable TV packages.

Editor’s Pick

However, it could be that this service and the “disruptive” service are one-and-the-same.

Either way, the T-Mobile TV streaming product will be based on technology from Layer3, which T-Mobile acquired in 2018. Layer3 offers consumers a way to watch over-the-air channels through an internet stream, rather than needing a traditional antenna. Layer3 is only available in certain U.S. markets for now.

It’s quite possible the delays in the rollout of this T-Mobile service is due to the company needing more time to license content. However, we won’t really know much about what’s happened until T-Mobile makes the announcement.

What do you think? Are you a T-Mobile customer who will enjoy this free service, or would you think about switching to T-Mobile when this service becomes available? Let us know in the comments!

T-Mobile now has a 600MHz hotspot, going for $3 per month

Today, T-Mobile is launching the Coolpad Surf, a mobile hotspot that’s notable for being the world’s first with access to the coveted 600MHz spectrum (a.k.a. Band 71).

Band 71 is one of T-Mobile’s most-prized pieces of spectrum, as it allows for faster data speeds in rural areas — where T-Mobile coverage is notoriously spotty.

The Coolpad Surf can access that 600MHz spectrum and can also access 4G LTE Bands 2, 4, 12, 66, and can even access 3G Bands 1, 2, and 4 just in case there’s no LTE available in your area.

Editor’s Pick

Inside the Coolpad Surf is a 2,150mAh battery which the company claims can give you 48 hours of standby time as well as over five hours of continuous use. The device can also handle up to 15 connections at once.

Here’s a photo of the Coolpad Surf:

If you’re a T-Mobile customer interested in the device, you can add it to an eligible data plan for only $3 per month for 24 months. If you don’t want to do that, you can pay for the unit outright by spending $72 up front. The cheapest plan for the Surf gets you 2GB of data for only $10 per month (with Auto Pay).

How to Schedule Your Posts in WordPress (Step by Step)

Did you know that WordPress has the ability to schedule your posts to be published at a future time? This extremely useful feature is slightly hidden which is why many beginners don’t even notice it.

By scheduling your posts, you never have to worry about publishing your articles at a specific time. You can finish writing and schedule them to go live on the day and time that you choose.

In this article, we will show you how to easily schedule WordPress posts step by step and share some bonus tips to use WordPress scheduled posts like a Pro.

Schedule posts in WordPress

Why Schedule Posts in WordPress?

To create a successful blog, the best strategy is to plan your editorial calendar and publish articles on a regular basis.

That’s where schedule posts feature comes in handy. You can write your articles at your own pace and get ahead on your editorial calendar. Once you finish writing, you can schedule the post to be published at a specific date and time.

Another reason to schedule your posts is to benefit from peak traffic hours. There is a certain time in a day when each website gets the peak of their users. By publishing at that time, you can leverage existing traffic to increase your page views.

Now if you live in a different time zone than your readers, then it can be a problem. Imagine having your peak time as 3 a.m. where you live. Scheduling posts can be very handy for this.

Scheduling posts also comes in handy when you are going on vacation. You can simply schedule your blog posts and enjoy your holidays without worrying about writing and publishing content.

Now that you understand the benefits, let’s take a look at how to actually schedule your blog posts in WordPress.

How Do You Schedule a Post in WordPress?

It is easy to schedule WordPress posts if you know where to look. The option to schedule blog posts is not easily noticeable.

Once you have finished writing your blog post, you need to look under the ‘Document’ tab in the right column of the edit screen.

Under the ‘Status & Visibility’ panel, you need to click on the ‘Immediately’ link next to ‘Publish’ option.

WordPress post scheduling option

This will show you a date and time picker. You can select the date and time when you want to publish this post.

You can select a future date and time to schedule your article in WordPress.

You can also select a past date using the same tool to back date your blog post.

When you select a future date, you will notice that the publish button at the top will change into ‘Schedule…’.

Publish button changed into Schedule

Simply click on the Schedule button and WordPress will schedule your post.

The scheduled posts will be automatically published on the date and time you choose.

How to Schedule WordPress Posts in Classic Editor

If you are using the classic WordPress editor, then we highly recommend you to start using the new WordPress block editor, called Gutenberg.

The new WordPress editor is incredibly fast, modern, intuitive, and helps you create better content for your blog.

However, if you still want to use the older classic editor, then here is how you would schedule posts in WordPress.

Once you are done writing your post, look under the ‘Publish’ meta box in the right column of the edit screen and click on the ‘Edit’ link next to ‘Publish immediately’ option.

Change when to publish a post in WordPress

It will now show you the date and time options. Go ahead and enter the date and time when you want to publish your blog post and click on the OK button.

Select schedule date and time in classic editor

You’ll notice that the blue ‘Publish’ button will now change into ‘Schedule’. Go ahead and click on the schedule button to save your changes.

WordPress will now publish your blog post on the date and time you entered.

Troubleshooting WordPress Scheduled Posts

As your website grows, you will be regularly managing and scheduling WordPress posts. Following are some handy tips that will help you efficiently manage your scheduled posts in WordPress.

How do I use my own timezone in WordPress?

You need to change WordPress timezone settings, so that it uses your preferred timezone to publish scheduled posts.

How to view all scheduled posts in WordPress?

Simply go to Posts » All Posts page in your WordPress admin and then click on the ‘Scheduled’ link above the posts table. It will show all scheduled WordPress posts in the queue.

What to do if WordPress scheduled posts missed schedule?

To run scheduled tasks, WordPress uses a system called WP Cron. If the cron is unable to run due to a misconfiguration on your WordPress hosting server, then your scheduled posts will miss the schedule and won’t be published.

If you notice that your blog is affected by this, then you can install WP Missed Schedule plugin.

To learn more, see our article on how to fix the missed schedule post error in WordPress.

How to unschedule a WordPress post?

You can unschedule a WordPress post by editing the post and changing its status from ‘Scheduled’ to ‘Draft’.

In the new default WordPress editor, you will find the option to switch to draft at the top. In the classic editor, you will find it under the publish meta box.

Unschedule WordPress post

After you have changed a scheduled post to a draft, you can continue working on it, or you can publish it right-away if you want.

Can I also schedule WordPress pages?

Yes, you can schedule a WordPress page just like you would schedule a normal blog post.

Can I schedule changes to a published post or page in WordPress?

By default, you cannot schedule changes to a post or page you have already published. Any changes you make to a published post will become live as soon as you save it.

However, you can use the Tao Schedule Update plugin to make scheduled content updates.

For more details, please see our tutorial on how to schedule content updates in WordPress.

Fish codenamed Google devices might be smartwatches, not smartphones

If you were hoping for new Google hardware in 2019, you’re in luck — two devices with the codenames Salmon and Medaka popped up in the Android Open Source Project and the Lawnchair Launcher developer’s Twitter feed.

The two codenames were found in AOSP alongside Walleye, the codename for 2017’s Pixel 2. Lest you think that Salmon and Medaka are smartphones, notice how the top part includes the phrase “chin devices.” According to XDA Developers, that phrase normally refers to smartwatches with some sort of a chin cutout, similar to the Moto 360’s flat-tire look.

Android Police also noticed that two reviewers on the commit log work on Wear OS in some capacity.

Adding credence to Salmon and Medaka being smartwatches is Lawnchair Launcher developer Till Kottmann’s tweet. In the tweet, Kottmann claims that Medaka is “most probably” the rumored Pixel Watch. He didn’t say what Salmon is, though it could be another variant of the Pixel Watch.

Editor’s Pick

Lastly, salmon and medaka fish are two of the smaller fishes around. From a thematic standpoint, it would make sense to have them be codenames for smartwatches or some type of wearable.

What’s strange is that a previous report pegged the Pixel Watch with three codenames: Ling, Triton, and Sardine. At the time, the three devices were reportedly in the stage prior to mass production. Because of that, there’s a possibility that Google nixed all three devices.

Google itself said it didn’t have plans to launch its own smartwatch in 2018 and stayed true to its word. That said, the company might change its tune for 2019.

Android 9 Pie beta available now for US unlocked Galaxy S8 and Note 8

If you own a United States version of an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, or Galaxy Note 8, you can now sign up for the Android 9 Pie beta, via 9to5Google. The Note 8 previously received beta access, as did the S8 and S8 Plus, but only outside the U.S.

However, Samsung could close-off the program at any moment, so if you’re interested in trying this beta out, get on it quickly.

To sign-up for the beta, simply open (or download) the Samsung+ app on your Galaxy S8/S8 Plus/Note 8 and look for the Android 9 Pie beta notification. Tap that and then wait for the OTA download to make its way to your device.

The software download is around 1.5GB in size, although the exact size is different depending on the device. Just make sure you’re on a Wi-Fi connection.

Editor’s Pick

The Android 9 Pie beta includes all the usual Pie features as well as the brand new One UI skin Samsung launched late last year. It also includes the latest January 2019 Android security patch.

However, it is a beta, so you can expect plenty of bugs and UI problems if you elect to jump into the Pie world now.

Those of you on non-unlocked devices will have to wait a bit longer for the beta program, apparently. It is nice to see the unlocked variants get some love, though, as Samsung’s track record with updates for unlocked devices in the U.S. isn’t too great.

If you are able to sign up for the beta on your S8/S8 Plus, or Note 8, let us know in the comments!

Leaked press renders of LG G8 ThinQ suggest original leaks were right

A professional render of the LG G8 ThinQ. 91mobiles

  • New press renders of the LG G8 ThinQ just leaked.
  • The press renders depict a device very similar to the previously-leaked images from CAD renders.
  • If these renders are legit, the LG G8 ThinQ will likely be only an iterative upgrade over the LG G7.

Last week, reliable leaker @OnLeaks (via 91Mobiles) shared some renders allegedly depicting the LG G8 ThinQ (see above). Even hardcore LG fans were dismayed to see that the renders show a phone that looks very similar to last year’s flagship offerings from the company.

LG took to Twitter to claim those renders were wrong and didn’t accurately represent the final product. That gave us some hope that maybe the LG G8 would be different.

Alas, we now have leaked press renders of the final product (via XDA Developers) and, as we expected, the device looks pretty much the same as it did in @OnLeaks renders.

See for yourself below:

Leaked press renders allegedly of the LG G8 ThinQ. XDA Developers

Unless we’re missing something, these press renders are a dead ringer for the originally-leaked renders.

Just to clarify, @OnLeaks develops his renders from CAD files which are usually distributed to third-party companies before a phone’s launch so those companies can create things like cases, screen protectors, and other accessories. @OnLeaks creates a mock-up of the device from those files.

However, these press renders are different: these are created by LG itself. If these press renders are legit, this is exactly what the LG G8 ThinQ will look like, assuming there are no last-minute changes in the pipeline.

Editor’s Pick

As expected, the device looks very similar to the LG G7 ThinQ, with the only significant changes being the addition of a second camera on the front and the removal of the speaker grille in the notch. The dual cameras on the rear are reconfigured and look to be more recessed into the body of the device, as well. Other than that, though, this looks just like last year’s G7.

At least the headphone jack is still there.

We still don’t know about the specs of the device. We do, however, have a sneaking suspicion that there might be a second screen accessory available with the G8, which could be pretty interesting. There’s also a rumor about a new LG phone working without you having to touch the device.

It’s widely speculated that LG will launch the LG G8 ThinQ at Mobile World Congress towards the end of February. We’ll find out everything then.

In the meantime, what do you think? Are you disappointed that the original renders turned out to be pretty accurate, or is the addition of a second selfie camera enough for you to upgrade? Let us know in the comments!

Google I/O 2019 to take place May 7-9 in Mountain View

Google I/O 2019 will take place from Tuesday, May 7 through Thursday, May 9 in Mountain View, California.

On Friday morning, Google released a code breaking puzzle on its events page, hinting at a Google I/O reveal date. It didn’t take long for Till Kottmann, a Lawnchair Launcher developer, to crack the code. He Tweeted his answer in just an hour:

Google has yet to confirm these official Google I/O dates, and we still aren’t sure when tickets will go on sale. We’ll be sure to update this article as we learn more.

Google I/O is first and foremost a developer conference, so we can always expect some major new Android announcements, updates to Google services and Google Assistant, and much, much more. Zuckerberg plans to integrate WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger by 2020

An image of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg giving a public talk. Time

  • Mark Zuckerberg plans to integrate Facebook’s various messaging platforms into one mega platform.
  • Users on Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp would all be able to communicate, regardless of the app they are using.
  • Zuckerberg also wants end-to-end encryption for all three chat platforms.

According to anonymous sources speaking with The New York Times, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to integrate the company’s various messaging platforms into one mega platform.

The platforms would include Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, all properties owned by Facebook.

In order for this to be possible, Zuckerberg has assigned developers from the three sites to reformulate the core code of each service so they can be unified. As of now, the three apps are all coded differently so integration would be difficult or even impossible

Zuckerberg hopes to get the integration ready to launch by 2020.

Editor’s Pick

To be clear, integrating the three platforms would allow someone who only has a Facebook account to message someone who only has a WhatsApp account or Instagram account, or any combination thereof. Whichever platform you use or don’t use won’t matter — you’ll be able to contact anyone as long as they use at least one of the three.

The three platforms would still be separate, however, in that Facebook Messenger would still be called Messenger, etc.

Zuckerberg also wants to have all three platforms to feature end-to-end encryption, so any message you send to whichever platform will be secure.

Three of the biggest chat apps unified and featuring end-to-end encryption — that’s the dream.

According to the anonymous sources, Zuckerberg wants to increase the utility of the messaging platforms while also assuaging user concerns about privacy. The ultimate goal is for users to turn to Facebook properties for all their texting/chatting/video call needs instead of using rival services from other companies or SMS/MMS services through phone carriers.

This, of course, will allow Facebook to increase user engagement which will increase company profits.

This news is a stark reversal of Zuckerberg’s previous commitments to Instagram and WhatsApp, which were promised autonomy from Facebook when the company acquired them. So far, there have been no statements from Instagram or WhatsApp surrounding the rumors.

What do you think? Is this something that excites you? Or is this a non-starter for your communication needs? Let us know in the comments.

10 Best WordPress Forum Plugins (Compared)

Are you looking to add a community section on your WordPress site? Forums and discussion boards are a great way to boost user engagement and build a community around your site.

In this article, we’ve hand-picked the best WordPress forum plugins that you can use to build a community around your website or business.

Aside from the basic forum feature, we also made sure to find solutions that have advanced functionalities like question & answer board, custom social network feature, and more so you can build a community of your dreams.

Best WordPress Forum Plugins

Why Create a Forum on Your WordPress Site?

Online forums are an effective community-building tool where your website visitors can participate by posting questions, sharing solutions, new ideas, etc.

Your forum could be a Q&A (question-and-answer) platform, discussion board, knowledge sharing space, or a problem-solving support zone.

There are multiple advantages of adding a forum to your website.

First, your WordPress forum software will help users engage and participate on your website. When they participate, they’re more likely to come back, buy your products, and recommend them to their friends and family.

Second, it’s one of the most common and effective ways to provide support to your customers. When your customers have a technical or generic support question, they can hop into the forum and check to see if the issue is already posted. If it’s a new problem, then they can post and get their problem solved.

Lastly, it gives some SEO value to your website when a unique issue is discussed and the thread becomes popular. In many instances, forum threads outrank other types of content in search results. Sometimes, the user-generated content makes more sense than formal posts on your blog.

That being said, here’re the best plugins to add a forum to your WordPress website.

Note: You will need to have a WordPress website to use these plugins. If you want to start a new website, then you will need a domain and web hosting.

We recommend using Bluehost because they’re an official WordPress hosting provider, and they’re offering our users a free domain name and 60% off web hosting.

Important Advice on Building a Forum Website

Regardless of your choice of online forum software, you will need extra hosting resources to run a successful online community.

You can install all these WordPress forum plugins on a shared hosting plan. You can even run a forum quite effectively for a while on the same starter hosting package.

If you are just starting out and want to test the waters, then we recommend using Bluehost. They are one of the top hosting companies in the world and officially recommended WordPress hosting provider.

However, as more visitors use your forum, it will slow down your website and may even crash it. In that case, you will need to upgrade to a managed WordPress hosting plan.

We recommend using WPEngine. They are one of the top managed WordPress hosting companies in the world.

Our second choice would be SiteGround. They are an officially recommended WordPress and bbPress hosting provider.

11 things you need to know in tech for Friday, Jan. 25

Here’s your daily tech digest, by way of the DGiT Daily newsletter, for Friday, January 25, 2019.

AI can beat us at RTS games now

Artificial intelligence software DeepMind, which Google acquired back in 2014, has been feasting on humanity in complicated board games in recent years.

But mark the date: now it’s proven again that AI can beat humans, in even complex, fast, open-strategy games.

  • First, DeepMind set AI agent AlphaGo to play Go, the ancient Chinese board game, and deemed harder for AI to “win” than Chess, given the gameplay style.
  • AlphaGo, of course, beat the best human players, which was a Big Moment for computational advancement.
  • Now, DeepMind has shown its AI muscle in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, besting pro-players, including Grzegorz “MaNa” Komincz in a live match streamed on YouTube and Twitch yesterday.

From board games to live action:

  • A fast-paced, real-time game like Starcraft II is exponentially harder for computers to play than a board game. Time wasted thinking or misclicking is time handed to your opponent to outbuild or outmaneurver you.
  • The AI agent, like a muman, must juggle focusing on constructing its own base, while fending off the opponent, and calculating how to take down the enemy. Games take from minutes to hours, depending on the styles of play.
  • Anyone who’s played a real-time strategy (RTS) game, such as StarCraft, Command & Conquer, or Total Annihilation (my old-school favorite), knows how tricky it is.
  • This is a first victory for AI at such a complex situation.
  • After quietly training against itself, and then playing against a pro in Dario “TLO” Wünsch, the competition went public.
  • A demonstration event was streamed live with commentators, and regular comments from the pro-player MaNa who would chat through the decisions and reactions to the gameplay.
  • But as always, there are certain caveats.

The results:

  • AlphaStar, the name for DeepMind’s trained AI in this encounter, beat MaNa hands down – winning 10 straight games, before MaNa took one back in a small win for mankind.
  • Now, AlphaStar had some unique limitations. For example, it played just one race, known as Protoss, and challengers were only allowed to play Protoss as well. So it’s not quite AI vs all-comers, just yet.
  • Experts are discussing elements where AlphaStar was hindered, or given advantages. For example, AlphaStar was limited to a human-achievable number of actions per minute (APM). In a real-time strategy game, higher APM means better controls over the growing armies and resource-gatherers at your disposal, which usually means better results.
  • However, AlphaStar actually performed dramatically less APMs than MaNa, implying more efficiency and smarter decisions at each point.
  • Experts gushed more about DeepMind’s unique strategies, how well the AI could manage large numbers of units, with commentators talking about “hypnotic” levels of precise control.
  • Another controversial point is that AlphaStar was allowed to see the entire map during most games. In the one game where MaNa did win, the map vision for AlphaStar was limited. (DeepMind suggested that this didn’t matter too much, but the AI did control up to three armies in three different locations at once, impossible for humans)
  • Being able to see what your enemy is doing, rather than guessing, would normally be a huge advantage for human players.

Machine-learning gaming does it different:

  • I was impressed to see AlphaStar pull off advanced moves and different strategies across almost every game, using a very human style of gameplay I wouldn’t have expected,” said MaNa.
  • “I’ve realised how much my gameplay relies on forcing mistakes and being able to exploit human reactions, so this has put the game in a whole new light for me. We’re all excited to see what comes next.”
  • When MaNa won, he played into a weakness that the AI hadn’t yet figured out – rapidly warping units in and out of the back of AlphaStar’s base. In reaction, every time, AlphaStar, despite being in a better position overall, would turn its entire army around to deal with the threat. That allowed MaNa time to build up a big force and take down the AI. (Skip to about 2h:39m of the stream to watch.)
  • MaNa won that single game, figuring out an AI weakness.
  • But DeepMind will learn from that mistake, in theory.

The big picture is more than StarCraft:

  • DeepMind said that these AI advances that played out in StarCraft II are another sign of how benchmark achievements should be able to help humanity: “We believe that these advances … represent a step forward in our mission to create intelligent systems that will one day help us unlock novel solutions to some of the world’s most important and fundamental scientific problems.”
  • Read DeepMind’s detailed insight and report AlphaStar here.
