The Lenovo Smart Tabs combine an Android tablet with a smart speaker dock

The smart speaker trend is currently in full swing, and everyone seems to want to put a new spin on these products. Lenovo, which already has released its Smart Display speaker, has come up with a new twist of its own.

During CES 2019, the company announced two new Android tablets that it calls Smart Tabs. That’s because both of these tablets come with their own dock that turns them into touchscreen smart speakers when they are connected.

Both of these docks support Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant. The docks also have two 3W speakers and three far-field microphones. When one of the Lenovo Smart Tabs tablets is placed in the dock, it turns the smart speaker into a 10.1-inch, 1,920 x 1,200 touchscreen smart device. You can use it to view content on your security videos, ask it to show you recipes, order it to reveal your calendar, and much more.

Both tablets can, of course, be taken out of the dock and used as standalone devices. Both have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 540 processor inside, but sadly they also come with the older Android 8.1 Oreo pre-installed.

Editor’s Pick

The Lenovo SmartTab M10 is the cheaper of the two models, with prices starting at $199.99. You can get it with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM and with either 16GB or 32GB of storage. It also has two front facing speakers, a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera, along with a 4,850mAh battery. It comes in a slate black color and a “soft-touch” finish.

The Lenovo SmartTab P10 is the more expensive and higher performance model, with prices starting at $299.99. It supports up to 4GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage and has a much larger 7,000mAh battery. It also has four front-facing speakers on board, an 8MP rear camera, and a 5MP front-facing camera. It also has a fingerprint reader and has a nicer all-glass design.

Both of the Lenovo SmartTab tablet-smart speaker dock combos will go on sale later in January on Amazon and on the company’s official website.

Skagen, Fossil unveil new hybrid smartwatches, new glitz design for Skagen Falster 2

We’ve already seen new smartwatches from Kate Spade at CES 2019, but Fossil isn’t done pumping out smartwatches quite yet. The company has announced a new design for the Skagen Falster 2, as well as new hybrid watches from Skagen and Fossil.

Let’s start with the Falster 2 — the beautiful smartwatch that broke our hearts due to poor performance. If you can get past the hardware issues, you may want to check out the three new models Skagen is launching at CES.

The Falster 2 now comes in a new ‘glitz’ finish, which features understated diamonds around the entire bezel. Neither color option looks too over the top, which means they fit right in with Skagen’s minimal design language.

Skagen is also launching a new reflective silver strap for the Falster 2 (pictured above). The shine may not come through in pictures very well, but I found it to be really nice in person. It was a little stiff when I put it on my wrist, but I’m sure it will wear in over time.

All three new Falster 2 models are on sale now at the link below.

The Michael Kors brand hasn’t released a new smartwatch in some time, but that changes today. The refreshed Michael Kors Access Sofie smartwatch is back with a new design and premium hardware features.

The watch features a built-in GPS, heart rate sensor, and NFC chip for Google Pay, just like the new Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2. The new watch also features three physical buttons on the side, as well as a Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset under the hood, and a 300mAh battery.

Check it out at the link below!

Skagen also announced two new colorways for its Holst line of hybrid smartwatches (pictured above). These watches don’t appear to be on sale yet but we imagine both will go for around $195, similar to Skagen’s other metal-strapped Holst watches.

Not to be outdone, Fossil is also launching two refreshed versions of its popular hybrid smartwatches.

Don’t miss

The new Fossil Carlie hybrid (above, left) will appeal to people with smaller wrists. The stainless steel case measures 37mm wide and features 16mm interchangeable straps. Since they’re powered by a coin-cell battery, Fossil expects the battery to last up to six full months without a replacement.

As for colors, the Carlie is offered in a rose gold case with a pink leather strap, or a black stainless steel case and black leather strap for $155. It’s also available in rose gold stainless steel with a rose gold stainless steel strap, and a silver stainless steel case and stainless steel strap for $175.

The Fossil Neutra hybrid smartwatch (above, right) also has a 37mm case with interchangeable 16mm straps. The bottom of the watch face features a smaller dial that will give you an overview of your daily activity. The Neutra hybrid watch is available with a brown leather strap ($155) or a stainless steel silver strap for $175.

And just like other hybrid watches from the company, all of these watches will track your fitness, give you smartphone notifications, and also feature customizable buttons on the side.

Hands-on: Withings packed an ECG into its new customizable hybrid watch (Video!)

Withings has announced a new wearable called the Withings Move, a hybrid watch that you can customize to your heart’s content. This is the third device launched under the Withings name following the brand’s brief stint at Nokia.

If you’re familiar at all with Withings’ previous Activite watches, you’ll feel right at home here — the Withings Move smartwatches look like traditional analog watches but will also track your activity and give you smartphone notifications. They also have a unique dial on the right-hand side of the watch face that shows how close you are to achieving your daily activity goal.

Related

Withings is launching two models today: the Withings Move and Withings Move ECG. The Move ECG comes with an electrocardiogram (ECG) built in, and it’s limited in color options. Aside from that, these are the same devices.

ECG support shouldn’t be overlooked — ECGs can be used to help detect potentially serious heart problems like atrial fibrillation (AFib). While ECGs can be extremely helpful, they have yet to make their way to many mainstream wearables. The Apple Watch Series 4 is the most recent wearable to feature an ECG, though devices from Fitbit and Wear OS watches have yet to adopt the technology. That means Withings is one of your best options for a wearable ECG if you’re an Android user.

The Withings Move ECG is one of your only options for a wearable ECG if you’re an Android user.

To activate the ECG, just hold two fingers on the top and bottom of the watch casing. You’ll feel a slight vibration, and the watch will instantly start recording in the Withings Health Mate app. When we demoed this feature, the ECG kicked in right away — it was almost instantaneous. After 30 seconds of measurements, you can check the detailed graph in the Health Mate app, and even send the results straight to your doctor.

The Withings Move puts a focus on customizability. While the watches will only be available in five color options at launch, Withings will allow users to completely customize the colors of their watches later on in 2019. Think Moto Maker, but for watches. You can choose your own watch band, face color, dial color, and color for the numbers.

Withings plans to fulfill all U.S. orders right here in the U.S., so customizing a watch online should only mean a few days’ wait time before it ships out. Non-U.S. orders will be fulfilled at one of Withings’ Europe locations.

I quite like the Move’s design — it reminds me a lot of the Activite Pop lineup with all the bold colors.

Withings might have plans for a more ‘premium’ Move smartwatch in the future.

These bright, quirky designs won’t appeal to everyone though. Talking to Android Authority, Withings’ General Manager Mathieu Letombe says there is a possibility of a device with more “premium” materials in the future, but the company doesn’t have any plans for such a device at this time.

Of course, these watches will also track your activity and fitness throughout the day. They’ll automatically recognize activities like walking, running, swimming, and biking, and track your steps taken, calories burned, and distance traveled. If you aren’t a fan of automatically tracked activities, you can press a button on the Move to activate the on-demand workout mode, which will also activate the connected GPS mode. That means you’ll get accurate distance and pace metrics as long as you keep your smartphone with you on your runs. Unfortunately neither device comes with a heart rate sensor.

The Withings Move and Move ECG come with 5ATM water resistance ratings, too. Withings says the standard Move will last 18 months on its battery, while the ECG model will last up to a year.

Sleep tracking is also onboard. You’ll be able to track your sleep duration, how well you slept, and your sleep stages throughout the night. Withings Move users will also get access to Withings’ Sleep Smarter Program, which consists of eight weeks of recommendations to help improve your sleep patterns overtime.

The Withings Move is available for pre-order today, January 6 in five color options for $69.95. Devices are slated to ship about a month from now on February 5. The Withings Move ECG will be available in Q2 2019 for $129.95. You’ll be able to customize the ECG watch’s colors, but the face will only be available in black and white.

withings bpm core CARDIOVASCULAR BLOOD PRESSURE, ELECTROCARDIOGRAMAND DIGITAL STETHOSCOPE

That’s not all Withings is launching today — the company’s new BPM Core cardiovascular monitor has the ability to read your blood pressure, take electrocardiogram readings, and digital stethoscope measurements — all in one device. In fact, this is the first device ever that’s capable of taking all three of these readings. If you have concerns about high blood pressure or frequent the doctor for ECG readings, you’ll want to check out the BPM Core in Q2 2019 when it goes on sale for $249.95.

Binge read Batman, Aquaman, and more as DC Comics joins Comixology Unlimited

In 2016, the Amazon-owned digital comic book store Comixology launched a new service called Comixology Unlimited. It was like Netflix for comics, allowing people to read thousands of collections and single issues for the low monthly rate of $5.99 a month. However, the service launched without the “Big Two” publishers of Marvel and DC Comics joining in.

But in May 2017, Marvel made the move and decided to add a ton of its collections to Comixology Unlimited. And today, the other shoe fell as DC Comics has finally joined Comixology Unlimited.

You can now read thousands of great collections and single issues from the publisher for one very low monthly price. There are tons of collections of great classic and more recent comic book stories for digital binge reading featuring Batman, Aquaman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, and many more. That includes collections and graphic novels like Watchmen, Flashpoint, Batman: Hush, All-Star Superman and more.

Editor’s Pick

Thankfully, the price of Comixology Unlimited remains at $5.99 a month, which means the addition of DC Comics makes the membership even more valuable.

In addition to DC’s debut on Comixology Unlimited, collections of other DC Comics have now been added to two other Amazon-based digital book services. You can find them now on Kindle Unlimited, which costs $9.99 a month. In addition, Amazon Prime subscribers can read a large number of DC Comics collections for free under its Prime Reading feature.

The T-Mobile OnePlus 6T’s latest update removes Play Protect certification

Those that own the T-Mobile variant of the OnePlus 6T might want to avoid the latest update. According to a tip we received from Mark Buckman, the update is breaking Google Play Protect certification.

Mark isn’t the only person that encountered this issue — folks turned to Reddit, XDA Developers, and OnePlus’ forums to complain about the same problem with their devices.

Thankfully, there appears to be a workaround for affected T-Mobile OnePlus 6T owners. Hold down the Play Store icon for a second or two to bring up the app shortcuts. From there, tap App info and then choose Storage. You then select Clear storage. Once you do all of that, your device should regain Play Protect certification.

Twitter

If that didn’t work, make sure to also select the option to Clear cache that is next to the Clear storage option. If either workaround doesn’t work, all you can do is wait and see what happens next.

Editor’s Pick

We reached out to OnePlus and T-Mobile for comment on the matter. This post will be updated if we hear back from either company.

To check if you’re affected, open the Play Store and tap on Settings in the sidebar. Scroll down until you see Play Protect certification in the About section. If it reads like it does in the screenshot above that Buckman provided us, then you’re affected.

Play Protect is Google’s built-in malware protection for Android. Without Play Protect certification, you can’t sign into Google apps or use services like Google Pay. You also can’t use apps that rely on SafetyNet, so don’t expect Netflix to work on your device.

Samsung and LG announce big profit drops for Q4 2018

The Samsung logo.

While Samsung and LG are both making major product announcements in Las Vegas during CES 2019, both companies released some bad financial news. Samsung and LG each reported that investors should expect much lower profits for the just-completed fourth quarter of 2018 when it officially reveals those numbers later this month.

According to CNBC, Samsung now says it expects its operating profit for the fourth quarter to be around 10.8 trillion Korean won ($9.67 billion). That’s down 28.71 percent compared to the same period a year ago, and 18.1 percent lower than what financial analysts had predicted Samsung would report.

This is the first such decline in profits in two years for Samsung. The company claimed the lower profits were due mainly to memory chips sales made to data center customers, which were lower than expected in the quarter. However, Samsung added that both marketing expenses and flat sales in its smartphone division also led to some of its lower profits.

LG logo CES 2018 2

LG’s numbers for the quarter will be even worse. According to Reuters, the company reported that it expects its profits for the period to be 75.3 billion won ($67.03 million), or 80 percent lower compared to the same period a year ago. While LG didn’t mention any reasons for this decline, analysts have pointed to its lower smartphone sales as part of the problem, along with smaller profit margins for its big-screen TVs.

Here’s Verizon’s full-page newspaper ad that throws shade at AT&T

Verizon logo

AT&T ruffled a few feathers when it weirdly decided to brand portions of its existing 4G LTE network as “5G Evolution.” In response to AT&T’s antics, Verizon took out full-page ads in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today.

The letter suggests that Verizon won’t conduct the same misleading marketing that AT&T is guilty of. That said, Verizon is far from innocent. In October 2018, Big Red boasted about beating everyone to the punch with its commercial 5G service. The problem is that the service used a Verizon-created 5G standard instead of the global 5G standard.

Oh, and the service isn’t mobile — it’s a home internet service only available in select markets.

You can read Verizon’s full-page newspaper ad below and reach your own conclusion.

Everything is about to change. Breakthroughs in connectivity, artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality, autonomous vehicles, wearables and the Internet of Things (IoT) will all impact our lives in ways we can’t imagine. Underpinning these technological advancements is 5G.

The potential for 5G is awesome, but the potential to over-hype and under-deliver on the 5G promise is a temptation that the wireless industry must resist. If network providers, equipment manufacturers, handset makers, app developers, and others in the wireless ecosystem engage in behavior designed to purposefully confuse consumers, public officials and the investment community about what 5G really is, we risk alienating the very people we want most to join in developing and harnessing this exciting new technology.

That’s why we’re calling on the broad wireless industry to commit to labeling something 5G only if new device hardware is connecting to the network using new radio technology to deliver new capabilities. Verizon is making this commitment today: We won’t take an old phone and just change the software to turn the 4 in the status bar into a 5. We will not call our 4G network a 5G network if customers don’t experience a performance or capability upgrade that only 5G can deliver.

Doing so would break an enduring and simple promise we’ve made to our customers: That each new wireless generation makes new things possible.

It is this belief that led us to bring together key device, chip and network equipment manufacturing partners to create the 5G Technology Forum with the goal of developing global 5G standards more quickly. The result was a commercial 5G offering a full two years ahead of original estimates. It’s why we’re committed to build the first 5G Ultra Wideband network. It is the reason we opened 5G Labs to support entrepreneurs and innovators as they build the 5G applications that will change how we live, work and play. And it’s the motivating factor behind our sponsorship of 5G development challenges focused on education, public safety, robotics and other critical areas where 5G can impact lives today and tomorrow.

We lead by example. And we challenge our competitors, vendors and partners to join us. People need a clear, consistent and simple understanding of 5G so they are able to compare services, plans and products, without having to maneuver through marketing double-speak or technical specifications.

Our industry knows 5G will change the world. Let’s uphold that promise, while maintaining our integrity. The success of the 5G technological revolution must be measured in truth and fact, not marketing hype.

This new $50 accessory from Anker brings Google Assistant to your car

A promotional image of the Anker Roav Bolt in an automobile.

Today, mobile accessories company Anker announced a new entry into its portfolio of automobile products: the Anker Roav Bolt. Using the Roav Bolt, you can easily use Google Assistant voice commands while you’re behind the wheel.

The Anker Roav Bolt doesn’t work on its own — it actually uses your phone’s Google Assistant, acting as a bridge between your phone and your car. You plug the Bolt into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter port, connect it to your vehicle’s stereo via Bluetooth or an AUX cable, connect your phone, and boom: you’ve got the equivalent of a Google Home in your car.

Editor’s Pick

The advantage to this system is that you can issue the “OK Google” hotword to the Roav Bolt and it will unlock your phone for you, giving you complete hands-free access to various phone features. Using the Bolt, you can do things like make calls, send messages, play music, get directions, set reminders, check your calendar, or hear the latest news, all without ever touching your phone. Just say “OK Google” combined with your command and you’re all set.

Additionally, the Roav Bolt can charge your devices, as it has two built-in USB ports. Anker says the ports are “rapid charging,” but didn’t tell us any specifics.

Finally, another advantage to using the Roav Bolt is that it uses advanced echo canceling technology, so your voice commands are easily heard and understood even with street and car noise surrounding you.

The Anker Roav Bolt will launch at some point in February with a retail price of $50. As with most other Anker products, Amazon will likely be the best place to buy the product.

Mobvoi’s new TicWatch E2 and S2 lack features for a reduced price

Mobvoi TicWatch S2 and E2

Mobvoi TicWatch S2 (Left) and E2 (Right)

Mobvoi has built up a reputation for pumping out Wear OS watches left and right, and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping any time soon. The company just announced two new smartwatches, the TicWatch E2 and TicWatch S2, at CES 2019.

Both new watches are quite sporty in design. The TicWatch S2 looks more like a hiking watch, while the TicWatch E2 has a smoother, more approachable design while still remaining fitness-focused. Both are made of polycarbonate, both come with interchangeable 22mm straps, and both have the same 1.39-inch AMOLED displays.

In fact, aside from the slightly different sizes, both watches have the same specs under the hood:

Mobvoi opted for Qualcomm’s years-old Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC instead of going for the newer Wear 3100 chipset. While Qualcomm claims the 3100 is supposed to improve battery life and performance, early reviews of the Fossil Sport and Montblanc Summit 2 say otherwise. Mobvoi did tell Android Authority that it focused on battery life when developing the E2 and S2, so we’ll withhold our judgment until we put out our full reviews.

In my eyes, the one glaring downside on the specs sheet is the lack of NFC, which means you won’t be able to use Google Pay from either watch.

Mobvoi TicWatch E2

Mobvoi TicWatch E2

On the plus side, both watches seem to be good fitness companions. Both come with a built-in GPS (as well as GLONASS and Beidou), an optical heart rate sensor, and a 5ATM water resistance rating.

Mobvoi says the TicWatch E2 and S2 will go on sale soon after CES 2019, though we don’t have exact availability or pricing details at this time.

Hands-on: Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2 now features GPS, HR, and Google Pay support

Some of the most fashionable smartwatches in Fossil’s huge wearables empire comes from Kate Spade, the New York-based fashion company. Today, Kate Spade is announcing a refreshed Wear OS smartwatch called the Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2.

A big complaint users had with last year’s Kate Spade watches was that they were lacking in hardware features compared to the competition. Thankfully the company fixed that with this year’s lineup — the Scallop Smartwatch 2 now features built-in GPS, a heart rate sensor, a 3ATM water resistance rating, and NFC for Google Pay support. This is great news for users who don’t want to sacrifice features for aesthetics.

The design certainly hasn’t been neglected though — each Scallop Smartwatch 2 not only features the iconic spade icon on the top of the watch face, that spade icon also acts as a quick way to monitor your heart rate. And when the spade is tapped, a new heart animation appears before the watch turns on the heart rate sensor.

Of course, like the first generation Scallop watches, these new models also feature the “choose your look” app that lets you match your watch face to the outfit you’re wearing.

As for the tech specs, the Scallop Smartwatch 2 comes with a 300mAh battery, a 42mm stainless steel case, 16mm strap lugs, and 4GB of on-board storage.

Overall, the Scallop Smartwatch 2 looks and feels like a proper sophomore product. It takes all the things we liked most about the first generation and brings more advanced features, which will certainly make it appeal to more users.

If you want one of these on your wrist, the Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2 goes up for pre-order today and will be available in-store and online at katespade.com in late January 2019.

New watch faces for Fossil Sport and Gen. 4 Fossil watches

The watch faces, shown below, are meant to spread positivity and empowerment, and all feature motivational phrases chosen by Huffine.

Sony will mash up Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit in its Android TVs in 2019

Sony

It looks like Apple is making some changes to allow content from its platforms to be shown on more third-party devices. Nowhere is that more evident than this week’s reveal at CES 2019 from Sony. In its press event, the company stated that its lineup of smart televisions, all with Google’s Android TV OS installed, will soon add support for Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.

In its press release, Sony said the update will be released later in 2019 for its Z9G Series, A9G Series, and X950G Series TVs. The support for AirPlay 2 means that people who own iPhones, iPads, and Macs will be able to watch movies and TV shows from their iTunes app on their big screen TV.

The HomeKit support means that owners can link any HomeKit-based smart home devices to Sony’s TVs. This integration will allow people to use Siri-based voice commands that would connect their TV to things like lights, the thermostat, and more. Of course, Android TV-based smart televisions, including the ones made by Sony, already support Google Assistant with its own voice commands and smart home features.

Editor’s Pick

Other companies like LG, Visio, and Samsung have also announced during CES 2019 that it will add Apple’s AirPlay 2 to its upcoming smart TVs. Samsung is going one step further, with plans to add an iTunes Movie and TV Shows app directly in its 2018 and 2019 smart TVs.

All of this new support comes ahead of Apple’s plan to launch a premium video streaming service later in 2019, with original content that will compete directly with services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. It seems clear that Apple wants to make it easier to watch those streaming shows on big-screen TVs as well as on its mobile devices.

Squarespace vs WordPress – Which one is better? (Pros and Cons)

Squarespace and WordPress are two popular website builders that allow you to easily create a website without any technical skills or programming knowledge.

Recently, our readers asked us to compare Squarespace vs. WordPress because they were seeing a lot of commercials on TV for both platforms.

In this article, we will compare Squarespace vs. WordPress with the list of pros and cons for each platform. Our hope is that after reading our comparison, you can pick which one is better for you.

Squarespace vs WordPress comparison

Note: This comparison is between Squarespace vs self-hosted WordPress (not WordPress.com). See the difference between self-hosted WordPress vs WordPress.com.

Since we want to create the most detailed WordPress vs Squarespace comparison, we have broken down the article into multiple sections. We will look at each section and see which platform offers the most benefit to a beginner level user.

  • Ease of use
  • Costs
  • Design and templates
  • Extensions and integrations
  • E-commerce
  • Data portability
  • Languages and internationalization

Ready? Let’s get started.

Ease of Use and The Learning Curve

Most business owners and beginner-level users are not familiar with HTML, CSS, and other code related things. They want a platform that helps them easily create a website without hiring a developer.

Let’s see how both WordPress and Squarespace stack up in this category.

WordPress

WordPress is the top choice among users who want to start a blog or small business owners building a DIY website. Over 32% of all websites are powered by WordPress.

While WordPress is fairly intuitive and easy to use, there is definitely a slight learning curve.

Beginners will need to familiarize themselves with WordPress terminology and concepts such as difference between posts vs pages, categories vs tags, understanding themes and plugins.

The default WordPress content editor is fairly easy to use. It comes with custom blocks to add content elements to your pages, so you can build beautiful layouts with media-rich content.

Default WordPress editor

Despite the slight learning curve, in our experience, most users quickly adapt to WordPress.

Squarespace

Unlike WordPress, Squarespace does not come with a lot of choices. This lack of choice makes it very simple and easy to use. Even the absolute beginners can quickly write content and publish it.

Squarespace page editor

Squarespace also uses a block editor similar to WordPress. Adding images, videos, and audio files is simpler than WordPress. There are plenty of content blocks, and layout control choices in the block editor.

Squarespace lets you customize your templates and pages using a visual editor. However, you are limited to the options available in the customizer. It is a controlled environment, which means your options are limited.

Conclusion

Squarespace fares a little better than WordPress out of the box in terms of ease of use for absolute beginners. However it’s limited features might not be ideal for all business owners.

On the other hand, WordPress offers beginners a lot of choices right from the beginning which might be confusing at first, but it is a lot more flexible in the long run.

There are several WordPress page builder plugins that you can use to create completely custom websites with drag and drop (without hiring a developer).

The Costs

Knowing how much each platform cost is important in making a business decision. Let’s look at how much Squarespace cost vs. how much WordPress cost.

WordPress

WordPress itself is free. You are free to download, use, and build upon WordPress. It is an open source software with a GPL license which gives you all the freedom and control.

In order to build your website with WordPress, you will need to registar a domain and signup for a web hosting account.

Depending on your needs, you can choose a shared hosting plan, VPS hosting, or even managed WordPress hosting. Shared hosting plans work for most small personal and business websites.

See our guide on how to choose the best WordPress hosting.

The cost of web hosting and domain name vary depending on which hosting provider you go with. You are in charge of how much resources you need for your website, and how much you will pay for it.

With over 6800+ free templates and 54,000+ free plugins, you can run your website for as low as $2.75 per month (which includes your domain name and hosting – we recommend Bluehost or SiteGround).

One of the reasons for WordPress’ popularity is that the overall cost of building your website with WordPress is very low.

Apart from that, you can change your hosting plan as your site grows. This means you will only pay for the resources you actually use, so it’s easier to control the cost of your website.

We have a detailed article on the cost of building a WordPress website and how to keep it under budget.

Squarespace

The personal plan for Squarespace starts from $12 per month (billed annually) or $16 month to month. That’s a little more than a shared hosting plan for WordPress.

Squarespace pricing plans

However, unlike a shared WordPress hosting plan, this personal plan comes with very limited features. You can only add only two contributors to your site, and you cannot sell products.

Whereas you can start an online store with WordPress for less than that.

Squarespace business plan starts from $18 per month (billed annually) or $26 month to month. It includes eCommerce support, but they charge a 3% transaction fees. The business plan comes with unlimited contributors, pages, and additional advanced features.

They also have separate plans for online stores starting from $26 per month with no additional transaction fee.

Conclusion

WordPress beats Squarespace with flexible pricing plans available from a variety of web hosting services from around the world.

The cost depends on how much resources you use, and you get access to all WordPress features right out of the box.

Design and Templates

Both WordPress and Squarespace come with ready-made templates and design tools to make it easy for you to create a custom website.

Let’s see which one offers you more choices and tools to create well-designed websites.

WordPress

WordPress offers access to thousands of free and paid website templates. These templates are highly customizable, allowing you to use your own website logo, colors, upload your own images, and more.

Many WordPress themes come with multiple layout choices, drag and drop page builders, sliders, photo galleries, and tons of other features.

No matter what kind of website you are building, you will find hundreds of professionally designed templates for the job.

Wordpress themes

Many beginners find this abundance of choices a bit overwhelming. Here are some of our expert-picks of the best WordPress themes for different kind of websites.

For more on this topic, see our article on how to choose the best WordPress theme for your website.

Alternatively, you can also start with the Divi Theme which is a master theme with a lot of custom skins and complete drag & drop control.

Squarespace

Squarespace offers ready-made website templates neatly organized into different categories. There are themes for all popular website categories, with professional designs that look good on all devices.

Squarespace templates

However, this is a big area where Squarespace seriously falls behind. The number of pre-made templates are very limited, and your design options are also limited to the set of features available in the Squarespace customizer.

Themes come with a limited number of layout choices with each template. You can still do basic colors, fonts, website logo, and other things, but these templates are not as customizable as WordPress themes.

Conclusion

WordPress comes out as a clear winner in terms of design choices, customization options, and flexibility. Squarespace offers great looking templates, but they are limited in numbers and are not very flexible.

Extensions and Integrations

Extensions

All website builders come with a collection of built-in features. As your website grows, you would want to add more features and connect your site to work with third-party tools and services.

Let’s see how WordPress and Squarespace perform in this regard.

WordPress

The real power of WordPress comes from its massive ecosystem of plugins. These plugins are like apps for your WordPress site that you can install to add new features or change the default behavior of your site.

There are currently more than 54,000+ free WordPress plugins listed in WordPress.org plugin directory alone. There are also thousands of premium WordPress plugins available from third-party websites.

WordPress plugins

If you can think of a feature, there is a good chance that you’ll easily find a WordPress plugin that does it.

WordPress plugins are so robust that many of them are full-fledged platforms with their own add-on plugins and a thriving community built around them.

We have a list of the essential WordPress plugins that every website should have.

Then you have specialized plugins to create ecommerce websites, build membership community, sell online courses, and more.

To learn more see our article on how to choose the best WordPress plugin.

Because WordPress is the most popular website builder, most third-party services and tools have their own WordPress plugins which integrate their services to a WordPress website.

All top email marketing services, SEO tools, live chat software, and lead generation tools offer seamless integration with WordPress.

Squarespace

Squarespace comes nowhere close to WordPress when it comes to extensibility and integrations.

It is possible to add third-party integrations and customizations but unlike WordPress, Squarespace doesn’t have powerful APIs that developers can build upon.

Squarespace integrations

They do provide some official third-party integrations, but even those are limited and not all popular services are supported.

For eCommerce, you can use their built-in platform, but you cannot extend it in any way.

Squarespace lacks the functionality to allow custom websites that you might need for your online business idea.

Conclusion

WordPress is the clear winner here with an incredible ecosystem of thousands of plugins and integrations at your fingertips. Squarespace, on the other hand, has very few integrations and many of them are very limited.

E-commerce

Are you building an online store? Let’s compare the eCommerce functionality of WordPress vs. Squarespace.

WordPress

WordPress allows you to integrate and use any payment processor or platform you want.

There are many WordPress plugins that allow you to easily accept online payments using Stripe, PayPal, Google Checkout, 2Checkout, Payoneer, Skrill, and even Bitcoin.

eCommerce

WordPress has plenty of eCommerce plugins that can turn your website into an online store within minutes. World’s most popular eCommerce platform, WooCommerce, is a WordPress plugin.

WooCommerce comes with its own ecosystem with its own WooCommerce add-ons and thousands of WooComemrce ready themes.

There is no limit on how many products you add to your website, how you display them, or how you sell them. You can run your own affiliate program and use all the tricks to grow your sales without any restrictions.

Squarespace

E-commerce is limited on Squarespace. You can only use Stripe and PayPal for payment processing, which are only available in select few countries.

There is no other payment system available which restricts your ability to accept payments from a larger global audience. For a growing business, starting with such limitations is not a great idea.

Squarespace commerce

Apart from that, you can only sell products in Business or Commerce plans.

Let’s say you want to sell only one product, you will still have to pay for the Business plan, and the yearly costs of hosting a site with just one product to sell will be way higher than a shared hosting plan or VPS for WordPress.

As for third-party services, there are very few external services that you can integrate with your Squarespace website. This affects how you promote your website and the things you can do to make more sales and grow your business.

Conclusion

WordPress is way ahead of Squarespace when it comes to running an eCommerce website. The limitations of Squarespace are not so good for the growth of an online business.

The neat part about WordPress is that you can also use it alongside with Shopify. See our comparison of Shopify vs WooCommerce.

Data Portability

When signing a business agreement, you always have safety clauses. Such as if you’re not happy, then you can leave without any hassle.

This concept extends to online businesses as well, and it is called data portability. If you’re not happy with the platform, then you should be able to take all your work and move it somewhere else.

Let’s look at how WordPress and Squarespace compare in data portability and the freedom to switch.

WordPress

WordPress comes with built-in tools to easily export all your data. Not just your content and images, but you can also backup your themes, plugins, and the entire database. See our list of the best WordPress backup solutions.

Exporting content in WordPress

You can then easily move this content to any other Content Management System you want. You can store your content anywhere else and change web hosts at any time you want.

Squarespace

Just like everything else, the export feature on Squarespace is also very limited. You can only export certain parts of your content in a XML file. This includes your pages, galleries, and one blog page with all its posts.

Your product pages, album pages, text, audio, and video blocks will not be exported.

Conclusion

The content you create on your site is yours, and you should have the freedom and tools so that you can move it elsewhere. WordPress again beats Squarespace with easy to manage tools to export your entire site.

Languages and Internationalization

We live in a global world and many businesses cater to a multilingual audience in different geographical locations. Let’s see how Squarespace and WordPress handle languages, multi-lingual content, and geographical locations.

Languages and localization

WordPress

WordPress is fully translated into dozens of languages. Users on a WordPress site can choose their own language from their profile settings.

Most WordPress themes are translation ready and all popular WordPress plugins are also translated into many languages.

Basically, you can build a WordPress website in any language you want. You can even translate WordPress yourself if your language is not yet available.

WordPress does not come with multi-lingual functionality out of the box. However, there are excellent plugins to create multilingual websites that are SEO friendly and incredibly feature rich.

Squarespace

Squarespace platform is fully translated into six languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese). You can change your site language and choose different timezone / country.

You can only use currencies supported by Stripe or PayPal for your store products.

You can create multilingual pages by basically duplicating your pages. You will have to manually create a site structure or create different sites for each language (You will be billed for each site separately).

Conclusion

WordPress is way ahead in terms of languages and localization options. Squarespace again comes out as very limited and totally inadequate to create multilingual websites.
