Nokia 7.1 Plus (Nokia X7) leak points to Snapdragon 710 chip, dual rear cameras

  • Nokia 7.1 Plus specs and renders may have leaked.
  • The handset is tipped to come with a Snapdragon 710 chip, dual rear cameras, and a display notch.
  • The phone will apparently go on sale later this month for 2699 yuan, or around $390.

The rumored Nokia 7.1 Plus, expected to be called the Nokia X7 in China, may have leaked ahead of its official reveal. SlashLeaks posted several renders of the alleged smartphone earlier today, along with its specs sheet.

The handset is shown from all sides revealing a USB Type-C port on the bottom, headphone jack at the top, and a display notch. It looks like a slim, metallic smartphone, featuring a large display area and dual (Carl Zeiss-branded) rear camera. The typical, circular Nokia fingerprint scanner also seems to be in place on the rear.

SlashLeaks says the 7.1 Plus will feature a 6.18-inch (2246 x 1080 resolution) TFT LCD display, Snapdragon 710 chip (@2.2GHz), 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. The battery reportedly comes in at 3,500mAh, while the cameras are made up of 20MP front-facing snapper, and dual 12MP and 13MP rear cameras. The 7.1 Plus is also said to have 154.8 x 75.76 x 7.97mm dimensions, weigh 178g, and run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

Finally, the Nokia 7.1 Plus is said to be launching tomorrow in China and going on sale October 23 for 2699 yuan (~$390).

The Nokia 7.1, revealed at the beginning of October.

While we can’t speak to the legitimacy of the leak, given its recent history with ‘Plus’-branded phones — like the Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 Plus — HMD Global is likely to launch a 7.1 Plus at some point.

If the speculation is accurate, this would mean the 7.1 comes with many improvements over the Nokia 7.1, including a better chip, more RAM, higher resolution cameras, and more internal storage. That’s a lot of upgrades for a (potentially) small price hike.

HMD Global announced the Nokia 7.1 only earlier this month and it’s expected to go on sale in the coming weeks for ~$300 — and it was already shaping up to be a cracking handset (find out more about it at the link below). Though there would probably be more than 90 bucks separating them if/when they got a release in the West, they could still offer great potential in the mid-tier.

Qualcomm brings Broadcast Audio to the Snapdragon 845

Bluetooth audio is finally becoming increasingly popular, not just in headphones, but across the smart home and smart speaker ecosystems too. Many consumers and businesses now seek multi-speaker and multi-room systems. Qualcomm announced today it’s making it easier to stream audio from your phone to multiple devices by adding these capabilities to its Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform. Smartphones arriving later this year could therefore support the feature.

Qualcomm’s Broadcast Audio enables a single audio stream to be shared to multiple devices with perfect synchronization using Bluetooth. This could include streaming audio to multiple speakers in the same room from your phone, sharing music to multiple wireless headsets, or even using a phone as a mass broadcast system to speak to multiple devices at once. It works for streaming music to speakers, but it can also be used for voice communication and other audio sharing between handsets, as well as consumer, business, and professional audio gear.

Qualcomm powers a wide range of Bluetooth and audio products, so supporting enhanced Bluetooth features on its latest mobile platform — often a hub for streaming — makes sense. The company’s platform portfolio has grown to include products like wireless headphones and smart speaker SoCs, which also support casting and multi-room setups.

As well as multi-device streaming, Qualcomm’s technology also offers a simple setup and pairing process to manage multiple devices at once, automatic packet retransmission to prevent dropped or skipped audio, and the option for an encrypted audio stream to stop eavesdroppers from hijacking your stream.

In addition to the Snapdragon 845, Broadcast Audio is also available on many of the company’s Bluetooth audio SoCs, which are designed for speakers and headphones. These include the CSR8670, CSR8675, CSRA68100, and the latest ultra-low-power QCC5100. The company is also offering software updates for its chips to bring support to existing products, so we might see this feature in plenty of other places.

The bottom line is if you pick up a Snapdragon 845 powered handset later this year, you’ll probably be able to enjoy one-to-many Bluetooth streaming.

Deal: Free Gear IconX earphones with every Galaxy S8, Note 8 at Samsung US store

Samsung For a limited time, anyone buying a Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, or Galaxy Note 8 from Samsung’s store will also get a pair of the manufacturer’s own Gear IconX wireless earphones completely free.

Samsung is one of just a handful of Android OEMs that has stuck with the tried and true 3.5mm headphone jack in recent years – a trend that’s expected to continue with the upcoming Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. That being said, not all Galaxy users will want to mess around with cables when wireless alternatives are now readily available.

Editor’s Pick

With its latest deal, which runs until March 1st, Samsung is essentially bundling its own flagship wireless earbuds with its top-tier phones.

The Gear IconX (2018) earphones are kitted out with 4 GB of onboard storage and touch controls which supports playback even if you don’t have your phone with you.

The buds also offer up to seven hours of standalone time on a single charge, or up to five hours in Bluetooth mode and up to four hours of talktime. They also come with a carrying case outfitted with its own 340 mAh battery.

The Gear IconX earphones usually retail at $199, so you’re certainly getting your money’s worth. The deal is available exclusively via Samsung’s US store and features unlocked devices or models tied to selected carriers, including Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, US Cellular, and more. Hit the button below to head to the store page.

This latest deal follows equally tantalizing reduction on Samsung’s 2017 flagship range at Best Buy. To put it bluntly, if you don’t care about the Galaxy S9 but still want a great Samsung phone, now would be a great time to pick up a Galaxy S8 or Note 8 as retailers attempt to clear some of their older stock.

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon X24 LTE modem and Wireless Edge Services for new devices

Qualcomm concluded its 2018 5G day in San Diego by announcing the newest generation of its Snapdragon X-series LTE modem, the Snapdragon X24.

The X24 is the first modem based on a 7nm LPE process, which offers a number of enhancements over the second generation X20 modem.

Where the X20 modem was a 20 percent speed increase over the X16, with 12 spacial streams over three carriers to hit a max throughput of 1.2 Gbps, the X24 takes it to the next level. It has 20 spacial streams over seven carriers, giving a simultaneous throughput of 2 Gbps by taking advantage of unlicensed spectrum. This extra data throughput could enable new more demanding experiences like VR and AR, and transfer information at a much higher rate.

See also:

The modem also utilizes the world’s first RF chip based on a 14nm process, significantly improving power efficiency over the X20 modem. This is important since the new modem can access so many more spacial streams and tap into a higher range of unlicensed spectrum to achieve higher speeds and better stability.

Qualcomm is aggressively pushing its new 5G networking standards, also announcing a new initiative to help connect the world’s devices reaching far outside the mobile space.

Qualcomm’s Wireless Edge services are bringing Snapdragon chipsets and 5G capabilities past the smartphone and into the ever-expanding IoT space. We’ve already seen these chipsets implemented in Windows laptops promising incredible battery life and portability, but the new initiative is looking to inject Snapdragon SoCs into anything you can imagine — home appliances, industrial equipment, and a variety of other devices and services.

According to Qualcomm, one of the key benefits of using these processors is design simplicity. The Snapdragon chipset gives OEMs access to things like reference designs, open API’s and SDK’s, integrated software, and engineering support to make using these chips as seamless as possible. Qualcomm is also giving customers a long-term manufacturing guarantee, as well as software and security support, so they won’t need to worry about support dropping when new SoCs release every year.

As we saw with Snapdragon 835 laptops, energy efficiency is a huge reason someone might want to use these chipsets. Snapdragon SoCs have been designed with energy efficiency and phone-capacity batteries in mind, so larger products with bigger batteries should see incredible battery life with Snapdragon processors. Though more common IoT appliances like refrigerators and washing machines will remain plugged in at all times, commonly unplugged devices could get an incredible leap in energy efficiency.

Qualcomm also committed to supporting ecosystems like Thingspace, AWS IoT, Android Things, Linaro, and more. This way it shouldn’t matter what IoT backend you use — you’ll more than likely have support right out of the gate. With Wireless Edge services onboard, Qualcomm will also handle updates to their chipsets seamlessly, activating features and updating security loopholes without the need for consumer attention.

Qualcomm’s LTE IoT SDK for MDM9206 will also allow pre-integration with multiple device managers and tools like Alibaba, China Mobile, Verizon, Ericsson, and more. This way all you’ll need is the MDM9206 and the LTE IoT SDK. No additional micro-controller is necessary.

Qualcomm wants these Wireless Edge services to help IoT applications flourish in 2018 and beyond, and to help with that it’s making the transition to the connected world as simple as possible.

What are you hoping to see a Snapdragon chip inhabit next? Let us know in the comments section below.
