Report: iPhone XR bestselling 2018 model in US, iPhone XS worst

The Apple iPhone XR as depicted on stage during the Apple Event 2018.

  • Apple, for the first time ever, did not release iPhone sales numbers during its most recent earnings call.
  • A survey conducted by CIRP gives us a good idea of what U.S. iPhone sales were like during the most recent fiscal quarter.
  • According to CIRP, the iPhone XR outsold the iPhone XS and XS Max combined, with the iPhone XS having the weakest sales.

For the first time ever, Apple didn’t release iPhone sales numbers during its most recent quarterly earnings call. However, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) is estimating its own data from a survey of iPhone buyers.

According to CIRP, the United States loves the iPhone XR. In fact, U.S. residents love it so much that CIRP concludes it was the best-selling iPhone of the first fiscal quarter of 2019 (roughly October 2018 through February 2019). The iPhone XR accounted for a whopping 39 percent of iPhone sales amongst survey takers during this period.

This is remarkable when you take into account that the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max had a head start on the iPhone XR — the XS/XS Max landed on September 21, 2018, while the iPhone XR landed on October 26, 2018.

The iPhone XR is much less expensive than the iPhone XS and XS Max due to cheaper build materials and some downgraded hardware, but still features a large display and the latest A12 chipset.

CIRP

As for the premium iPhone XS and the ultra-premium iPhone XS Max, things didn’t go as well. The two models combined accounted for 26 percent of U.S. iPhone sales amongst survey takers during the first fiscal quarter, with the iPhone XS Max outselling the iPhone XS by a 2:1 ratio.

Editor’s Pick

What does that mean? It could mean that most iPhone buyers want bigger phones, as both the XR and the XS Max fall squarely into the “phablet” category. It could also mean that most iPhone buyers don’t care about size but want a cheaper device — which they get with the XR — and those who can afford a more expensive model overwhelmingly opt for the bigger device.

CIRP believes that storage capacity could have something to do with the results as well. According to its research, an increased number of survey takers in 2018 opted to add more storage than the baseline model offers. This could mean that iPhone buyers value internal storage more than anything else, which would also explain the iPhone XR’s popularity: since it comes in a 256GB model, why pay for an iPhone XS or XS Max when you can get the same amount of space for less money in the XR?

Apple is scheduled to have its next quarterly earnings call on January 29 where it may — or may not — reveal actual iPhone sales numbers. You can read the full results of CIRP’s research here.

Here are the best T-Mobile deals and offers right now (January 2019)

T-Mobile is now the third-biggest U.S. wireless carrier and could soon be the second if the Sprint merger works out. Its growth is due in part to the many aggressive T-Mobile deals and offers always available for new and current customers, with discounts on phones and other accessories.

Read Next: Best unlimited data plans in the US

Here are the currently available T-Mobile deals, so you can be aware of them when you make your next smartphone purchase from the carrier. Since T-Mobile lets some deals expire and adds new ones, we will update this post as those deals are revealed.

T-Mobile deals – Buy a Galaxy Watch or Gear S3 Watch and get a second one “free”

T-Mobile is currently running a promotion where if you get a Samsung Galaxy Watch or the older Gear S3 Watch, you can get a second one for free. You have to get both smartwatches up front along with a paid Data plan with Paired Digits line. Existing T-Mobile customers will need to get at least one new line. The “free” part comes with bill credits that will total $400 over 24 months. There’s an upper limit of six “free” watches with the purchase of six regular watches, for a total of 12 watches.

If you cancel your T-Mobile account before the free period ends, you are responsible for paying the rest of the smartwatch’s price.

T-Mobile deals – Get up to four free Samsung Galaxy S9 phones with trade in and unlimited plan

The best current T-Mobile deal gets you a free Samsung Galaxy S9 when you trade in a qualified older phone and sign up for one of T-Mobile’s unlimited plans. This deal will be available for up to four phones and lines on T-Mobile unlimited accounts. The phones will become free with bill credits spaced out over 36 months.

As usual with these kinds of deals, if you cancel your T-Mobile account before the 26 month period ends, you are responsible for paying for the rest of the phone’s price out of your own pocket.

T-Mobile deals – Get a free Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 tablet

Another of the best T-Mobile deals gets you a free Samsung Galaxy A 8.0 tablet. You will have to add a new line to get this deal. The “free” comes when you get 24 monthly bill credits that will total $264. Again, if you cancel your T-Mobile account before the free period ends, you are responsible for paying the rest of the tablet’s price.

Everyone seems to be making high-end headphones except Google

Microsoft Surface Headphones Microsoft

  • Microsoft released a set of high-end wireless headphones at the end of 2018.
  • Now, both Apple and Sonos are reportedly also making premium over-ear headphones.
  • Why don’t high-end headphones made by Google exist?

In October last year, we found out that Microsoft had secretly developed a set of high-end over-the-ear headphones which eventually hit the market as Microsoft Surface Headphones. The noise-canceling cans are intended to directly compete with the industry-standards of the Bose QC35 and Sony WH-1000XM3.

Today, we’ve heard two new rumors regarding high-end headphones from major tech companies. The first is not-so-surprising, which is that premium speaker manufacturer Sonos is planning to release a set of headphones that will also likely compete with Bose’s and Sony’s flagships. Those could launch sometime in 2020.

Second, we heard a more surprising rumor, which is that Apple might be dipping its hat into the premium headphone market by releasing a pair of Apple-branded cans. This is surprising because Apple paid $3 billion for Beats in 2014 and has sold that brand’s products in its own stores and elsewhere ever since. In essence, a set of Apple headphones would place the company in competition with itself.

Editor’s Pick

Microsoft entered the ring last year, and now Sonos and Apple are likely getting into the premium headphones game, too. Meanwhile, general electronics companies like TCL are branching out into the budget and mid-tier market.

This all begets the question: where’s Google?

Granted, there are already two sets of Google headphones: the Google Pixel Buds and the Google Pixel USB-C earbuds. However, neither of these products would be considered high-end and neither have the premium aura that only over-ear, noise-canceling, totally wireless headphones can give. It also should be said that the Google Pixel Buds, in particular, didn’t get the greatest reviews.

The headphone market is crowded, yes, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping Apple. So why would it stop Google?

Google might not see any reason to get into the already-crowded premium headphone market, but this news from Apple and Sonos might force its hand, so to speak. After all, Apple’s iPhone revenue isn’t where the company would want it to be, so it needs new products to bring in new cash. If Apple makes a big push with a set of headphones that carry the Apple name, Google might have no choice but to respond if only to keep parity with the world’s most successful company.

Editor’s Pick

When you think about it, though, a set of premium Google headphones would likely do very well, especially if Google baked-in Google Assistant. And I’m not talking about having fast-access to Assistant on your phone through the headphones — I’m talking about Google Assistant working with the headphones even if your phone isn’t connected. Over-ear headphones would likely be big enough that Google could feasibly put enough hardware inside to make them kind of like a smart speaker you wear on your head.

That’s just an idea, but it does show that just because the premium headphone market is crowded doesn’t mean Google couldn’t offer something truly enticing.

What do you think? Would you buy a pair of Google-branded over-ear ‘phones if they were similarly priced to something like the Bose QC35? Let us know in the comments.

Moto G7 series: Everything we know so far

motorola moto g6 review design cameras

In this post, which will be updated regularly, we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding the upcoming Motorola Moto G7, G7 Plus, G7 Power, and G7 Play.

Motorola is gearing up to announce the Moto G7 series, which will consist of four phones: Moto G7, Moto G7 Plus, Moto G7 Power, and Moto G7 Play. Although the company hasn’t officially shared anything about the devices so far, we think we know quite a bit about them thanks to the many leaks over the past few months.

Here’s what we know so far about the Moto G7 series.

Moto G7 series: Release date

motorola moto g6 and G6 Play review cameras

The nitty-gritty

  • The Moto G7 series is expected to make its debut on February 7 in Brazil.
  • The phones will likely make their way to the U.S. a month or so after their reveal.
  • However, it’s possible that not all Moto G7 models will be released stateside.

The Moto G7 series could be just around the corner. Motorola has sent out invites for a press event taking place on February 7 in Brazil, where the devices are expected to be announced. Although the invite doesn’t specifically mention any of the Moto G7 handsets, we’re almost certain they’ll make their debut at the show.

Editor’s Pick

The Moto G6 series was also revealed in Brazil last year, which is a very important market for the company. But the phones were announced in April, which means Motorola could be speeding things up this year for some reason.

Like the Moto G6, the Moto G7 phones will likely go on sale in Brazil (and maybe a few other markets) soon after their reveal and will make their way to the U.S. around a month or two later. However, there’s no word if all four Moto G7 phones will be released stateside or just a few. As a reminder, the Moto G6 and G6 Play were released in the U.S., while the Plus model was not.

Moto G7 series: Specs and features

motorola moto g6 and moto g6 play review software display

The nitty-gritty

  • The Moto G7 and G7 Plus could come with 6.24-inch displays and dual-camera setups at the back.
  • The Moto G7 Power may pack a massive 5,000mAh battery.
  • The Moto G7 Play is rumored to be the smallest device in the series, with a display measuring 5.7 inches.

Motorola Brazil accidentally listed the entire Moto G7 range on its website, revealing more or less everything about the devices. The Moto G7 is expected to sport a 6.24-inch Full HD+ display and pack the Snapdragon 632 chipset along with 4GB of RAM under the hood. The device may come with a dual-camera setup on the back featuring 12 and 5MP sensors and an 8MP selfie snapper up front. The battery is said to come in at 3,000mAh, which is rather small based on the size of the device.

Other specs and features include 64GB of expandable storage, a near-stock version of Android 9 Pie, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. There’s no IP rating of wireless charging, which isn’t too surprising based on the price of the device. However, a headphone jack will likely be included as well.

The G7 Plus will be the best and most interesting phone in the upcoming series.

As you can tell by its name, the G7 Plus will offer more than the standard version of the device. It should be powered by the Snapdragon 636 chipset and feature 16 and 5MP cameras at the back. Motorola Brazil’s website didn’t reveal anything about the front-facing camera, but other rumors suggest it will come in at 12MP.

Like the Moto G7, the Plus model will also come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, but there’s a good chance additional memory variants will be available. The phone will also feature the same display and battery.

Overall, the Moto G7 and G7 Plus look to be minor improvements over their predecessors in terms of specs, which was to be expected. According to the details we have, the phones will sport larger displays, newer chipsets, and presumably better cameras. Megapixel count doesn’t tell us much, so we’ll have to test out the cameras to see just how much better they really are.

The Moto G7 Power and Play are expected to offer a little less in the specs department than the other two models. The G7 Power is said to sport a 6.2-inch display, while the one on the Play version may be smaller at 5.7 inches. Both might offer HD+ resolution, which is a step down from the Full HD+ panels of the Moto G7 and G7 Plus.

The G7 Power is rumored to pack the Snapdragon 630 chipset under the hood, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Staying true to its name, it could come with a massive 5,000mAh battery, which should be good for around two days of use. Other specs could include a 12MP rear camera, an 8MP selfie snapper, and the latest version of Android.

Rumors suggest the Moto G7 Play will sport the same chipset as the Power model and will feature the same 8MP selfie snapper as well as 32GB of storage. However, it will possibly offer a smaller 3,000mAh battery, a higher resolution 13MP camera, and only 2GB of RAM — although it’s possible a variant with more RAM will also be available.

Moto G7 series: Design

motorola moto g6 review design cameras logo

The nitty-gritty

  • The Moto G7 phones might look a lot more modern than their predecessors.
  • The Moto G7 and G7 Plus may come with thin bezels and a waterdrop notch.
  • The Moto G7 Power and Play will follow the same design language but could feature thicker bezels and larger notches.

Renders of all four Moto G7 phone have leaked, leaving little to the imagination. They show that the devices will have a more modern design than their predecessors, mainly due to thinner bezels and, therefore, higher screen-to-body ratios.

The Moto G7 and G7 Plus may look extremely similar, featuring a waterdrop notch seen on devices like the OnePlus 6T. The curved back of the devices will likely be made of glass and feature a circular camera module, according to the renders. It looks like it protrudes out of the body of the devices quite a bit, which is something not everyone will like, but I find it to be quite appealing.

A render apparently showing the Moto G7 Plus.
A leaked render apparently showing the Moto G7.

The Moto G7 Power and Play follow the same design language as the other two devices, although they don’t look quite as premium. Their bezels are larger all around, and the same goes for the notches. The back camera modules are a bit different as well, as you can see in the images below.

A render purportedly showing the Moto G7 Power.
A render of what is said to be the Moto G7 Play.

The folks at 91Mobiles managed to obtain hands-on images of the Moto G7 (see below), though it’s worth noting the device in the photo looks more like the bigger Moto G7 Plus — check out the flash module at the back and compare it with the render above. Regardless, the images tell the same story as the render and also reveal that the device will — in addition to red — be available in black. More colors may be revealed at launch.

Moto G7 series: Price

motorola moto g6 review software display motorola logo fingerprint sensor

The nitty-gritty

  • The Play model is rumored to cost 150 euros, while the Power variant could retail for 210 euros.
  • Moto G7 and G7 Plus pricing is unknown, but we expect them to cost around the same as their predecessors.

Last year’s Moto G6 retailed for $250/250 euros, while the G6 Play went for $200/200 euros. The Plus model was not released in the U.S. but it was available in Europe, where it launched with a price tag of 300 euros (~$340).

Editor’s Pick

Pricing for the Moto G7 series has not been made official yet, but rumors have it that the Play model will retail for 150 euros, while the Power variant will set you back 210 euros. This may translate to $150 and $210 for the U.S. market, just like last year with the G6 phones — although this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Pricing for the Moto G7 and G7 Plus hasn’t leaked yet, but we expect the phones to cost around the same as their predecessors. It’s possible Motorola will raise the prices a bit, but probably not by much. The company has to be careful not to price itself out of the market — especially with the Plus model — as consumers can get a device like the Pocophone F1 with the Snapdragon 845 chipset and 6GB of RAM for a little more than 300 euros.

Deal: Verizon Prepaid offers 15GB of data for just $45 a month

At $40 per month for unlimited and unthrottled data, Verizon’s Visible prepaid service certainly warrants your attention. That said, one of Verizon Prepaid’s plans offers 15GB of data for $45 a month and might be the better deal for some.

This promotion tacks on an extra 7GB of data to the 8GB prepaid plan. The 7GB of data won’t go away, but the bonus data is only available for a limited time. Also, signing up for Auto Pay is what brings the monthly price down to $45 from $50. You can’t get the Auto Pay pricing until the second month, so you’ll have to pay $50 for the first month.

Editor’s Pick

Visible’s monthly pricing is impressive, but network speeds are always capped at 5Mbps. Visible also caps video streams at 480p resolution. They might not have truly unlimited high-speed data, but Verizon Prepaid plans don’t have capped network speeds or video streaming resolutions.

The 15GB Verizon Prepaid plan also includes two bonuses that you won’t find on Visible’s plan: unlimited international texting to over 200 destinations and unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada.

More significantly, the 15GB Verizon Prepaid plan supports any smartphone that can connect to Verizon’s CDMA network. That’s a big advantage over Visible, which only supports iPhones and the pair of Galaxy S9 phones at the time of this writing.

You can click the link below to check out Verizon’s prepaid offerings. Make sure to select Prepaid Price in the box next to the Filter by option near the top of the page.

Puzzle game Angry Birds Dream Blast now available on the Play Store

Developer Rovio has just announced Angry Birds Dream Blast, the 18th entry in the Angry Birds game series.

Dream Blast doesn’t feature the castle-destroying gameplay mechanic of the original Angry Birds. Instead, your job in Dream Blast is to match bubbles with the same color. Think of the game like a cuter version of Bejeweled with a proper physics engine.

Spicing things up are Dream Blast’s boosters and hundreds of levels. Each booster has a special ability that, when tapped, leads to more bubble-blasting. You can use multiple boosters at the same time in each level, though you must meet certain criteria to create these boosters.

Editor’s Pick

For the most part, Rovio positions Dream Blast as a relaxing puzzle game. For those that want a challenge, the game will feature limited-time Dream Events. These events present various in-game challenges, which let you earn spots on the global leaderboard and better rewards once completed.

Rovio will add Dream Events “periodically,” and will also add new levels each Friday to keep things fresh.

Angry Birds Dream Blast is now available for free on the Google Play Store. Parents, be warned — the game features in-app purchases that go up to $99.99 for things like premium currency and special items.

Huawei says it could become #1 smartphone maker in the world this year

  • Huawei CEO Richard Yu proclaimed his company will be the biggest smartphone manufacturer as early as this year.
  • The company saw smartphone shipments grow by 35 percent from 2017 to 2018.
  • Yu also reaffirmed that the Huawei foldable phone will launch at Mobile World Congress in February.

At a recent Huawei news conference in Beijing (via Reuters), mobile division CEO Richard Yu made a bold statement: “Even without the U.S. market, we will be number one in the world. I believe at the earliest this year, and next year at the latest.”

Yu is referring to the company’s smartphone division, which is currently the second-largest in the world, bested only by South Korean rival Samsung.

For most of 2018, Huawei was in third place behind Samsung and Apple but overtook Apple’s spot in August. Throughout 2018, the company had made considerable gains while both Samsung and Apple faced their share of hardships.

Reportedly, Huawei shipped over 208 million smartphones last year, a whopping 35 percent increase over 2017 when it shipped 153 million handsets. This growth is in stark contrast with the mobile industry as a whole which saw three percent fewer smartphones shipped worldwide as compared to the previous year.

Editor’s Pick

However, Huawei has also faced some major hardships recently as governments around the world place full or partial bans on Huawei products due to allegations that the company has close ties with the Chinese Communist government. Although no solid proof has ever been brought to light surrounding these claims, it hasn’t stopped politicians from being wary that Huawei could allow Beijing to spy on other countries through Huawei products.

“Our customers have trust and confidence in us,” Yu said when asked about these issues. “It’s only politics guys which are trying to put pressure on us.”

Because of these political problems, Huawei has almost no presence in the United States, one of the biggest global markets for smartphones. If Huawei were able to sell products in the U.S., there is little doubt it would quickly ascend to become the top smartphone manufacturer.

During the same press conference, Yu also reaffirmed that Huawei will launch its foldable smartphone at Mobile World Congress at the end of February and it will be available for purchase in April at the earliest. He also discussed the Balong 5000 chipset which will directly compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem (Yu declared the Balong 5000 is the world’s most powerful 5G modem).

You can secretly listen in on those Call Screen spam conversations on your Pixel

One of the coolest features launched with the Google Pixel 3 is Call Screen, which allows you to have Google Assistant answer your spam calls. Rather than waste your time dealing with telemarketers, Assistant will do all the work for you.

As Call Screen does its thing, it’s easy to watch a transcript of the conversation if you like. However, a not-so-obvious feature exists which allows you to listen in on the conversation — without the spam caller knowing you’re there.

A user on Reddit accidentally discovered the relatively-unknown feature. To listen in during a Call Screen conversation, simply turn the volume up using the volume rocker and the audio will play through the phone’s speakers. Once again, you’ll be able to hear the human caller and Google Assistant’s responses, but the caller won’t be able to hear you.

Editor’s Pick

Some users in the Reddit thread also said they had success by simply lifting the phone to their ear to hear the calls through the ear speaker, but other Redditors said this didn’t work for them. Your mileage may vary.

Obviously, the whole point of Call Screen is to have Google Assistant do the work of answering the calls, so you don’t have to waste your time dealing with them. By stopping what you’re doing and listening in on the call, it kind of defeats the purpose. However, I’m sure the calls will sometimes be hilarious and therefore it will be more like a fun break rather than a frustrating waste of your time.

Call Screen works on the Google Pixel 3, Pixel 2, and the original Pixel phones. There’s no word yet on whether the feature will come to any other Android devices.

Deal: Save $300 on a Verizon Google Pixel 3 or 3 XL, no trade-in needed

When the Google Pixel 3 launched in October last year, people quickly complained about how it’s a tad overpriced. I mean, an $800 starting price for the base-level model is pretty steep!

However, there’s a Google Pixel 3 deal happening right now at Best Buy which lops $300 off the price of any variety of the Verizon models, both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Now we’re talking!

Of course, in order to get the deal, you’re going to need to either sign up for new Verizon service or sign a new contract for two years of service if you’re already a subscriber. You’re also going to need to pay in monthly installments instead of a lump sum.

Editor’s Pick

But hey, at least this $300 savings doesn’t require a trade-in or any other hoops to jump through.

The pricing of the models breaks down like this:

As of right now, all three colors are available for all models (Just Black, Clearly White, Not Pink). Be sure to choose the right color before checking out!

How to Easily Move WordPress to a New Domain (without Losing SEO)

Do you want to move your WordPress site to a new domain? Changing your website’s domain name can significantly impact your SEO rankings, and it’s a process that needs to be done very carefully.

While you cannot avoid temporary SEO fluctuations when moving your website to a new domain, you can definitely minimize the impact and quickly regain your search traffic and rankings.

In this guide, we will show you the proper way to move WordPress to a new domain without losing SEO.

Properly moving WordPress to another domain name

Here’s the 5 step process that we will cover to help you migrate your WordPress site to a new domain name:

  1. Create a Duplicator package of your WordPress site
  2. Create a database for new domain name
  3. Unpack WordPress on new domain
  4. Setup Permanent 301 redirects
  5. Notify Google about the change

Before You Start

Before you start, we want to emphasize a few things.

The process of switching to a new domain will temporarily affect your search engine rankings as Google and other search engines adjust to the changes.

Yes, this will also temporarily affect your search traffic as well. Please keep in mind that this is normal, and it happens to all websites that switch to a new domain.

However, you can dramatically decrease the SEO impact by following this guide. We will show you the right way of moving your WordPress site to a new domain name, setting up proper 301 redirects, and notifying search engines.

Please note that this guide is not for moving WordPress site to a new web host. This is for switching a domain name. Yes, while the process is similar, there are extra things involved in this process.

Pre-Steps

In this guide, we are assuming that you have your WordPress site setup on oldsite.com, and you are trying to migrate it to newsite.com.

We are also assuming that you already have a web hosting account, and you are familiar with your web hosting control panel.

You will also need to know how to use FTP.

In case you don’t have a web hosting account, we recommend using Bluehost (great for small sites + comes with a free domain) or WP Engine (great for large sites).

Once you have your new web hosting account and domain name, you’re ready to start the process.

Step 1: Create a Duplicator package of Your WordPress Site

The first thing you need to do is create a full backup of your WordPress site. While there are many WordPress backup plugins available, the one we’re going to show in this step does both backups and migrations.

It’s Duplicator and it’s a completely free plugin.

Let’s start by installing and activating the Duplicator plugin on your old domain name. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Once activated, the plugin will add a Duplicator menu item in your WordPress admin. You need to click on the Duplicator menu, and then click on the create button to create a new package.

Create a new Duplicator package

After that, you will be asked to click on the Next button to continue.

Duplicator will now run the website duplicator wizard. First, it will run some tests to see if everything is in order. If all items are marked ‘Good’, then click on the ‘Build’ button.

Build Duplicator package for switching to new domain name

The plugin will now start creating a duplicator package of your WordPress site. This process may take a few minutes depending on the size of your website.

Once finished, you’ll see download options for Installer and the Archive package. You need to click on the ‘One click download’ link to download both files to your computer.

Download Duplicator package

The archive file is a complete copy of your website, and this will allow you to move WordPress to another domain name. The installer script will automate and run the migration by unpacking the archive file.

Step 2. Create a Database for New Domain Name

Before you can move, you’ll need a database to unpack WordPress on your new domain name.

If you have already created a database, then you can skip this step.

To create a database, you need to visit your hosting account’s cPanel dashboard, scroll down to the ‘Databases’ section, and then click on the ‘MySQL Databases’ icon.

Database icon in CPanel

On the next screen, you’ll see a field to create a new database. Simply provide a name for your database and click on the ‘Create Database’ button.

Create database for switching to another domain name

cPanel will now create a new database for you. After that, you need to scroll down to the MySQL Users section.

Next, provide a username and password for your new user and click on the ‘Create a user’ button.

Adding a new MySQL user

The new user you just created, still does not have permission to work on the database. Let’s change that.

Scroll down to the ‘Add User to Database’ section. Simply select the database user you created from the dropdown menu next to the ‘User’ field, then select the database, and click on the add button.

Add user to database

Your database is now ready to be used on for moving WordPress to the new domain name. Make sure to note down the database name, username, and password. You’ll need this information in the next step.

Step 3. Unpacking WordPress on New Domain Name

Now you need to upload the Duplicator files you downloaded earlier to your new domain name.

First, connect to your domain name using an FTP client. Once connected, make sure that the root directory of your website is completely empty.

After that, you can upload the archive and installer files to the root directory.

Upload Duplicator files to new domain name

Once both files have finished uploading, you are now ready to unpack WordPress.

Open a new browser tab and go to the following URL:

http://example.com/installer.php

Don’t forget to replace example.com with your new domain name. This will launch the Duplicator migration wizard.

Duplicator wizard

The installer will look for the archive file. You need to check the terms and conditions checkbox and click on the next button to continue.

Now, the installer will ask you to enter your WordPress database information.

Your host will likely be localhost. After that, you will enter the details of the database you created for your new domain name in the earlier step.

Connect to the database for your new domain name

Once done, click on the next button to continue.

Duplicator will now unpack your WordPress database backup from the archive into your new database.

Next, it will ask you to update site URL or Path. You shouldn’t have to change anything since it automatically detects the URL of your new domain name and its path.

If it doesn’t, then you can change the URL to your new domain name. After that, click on the next button to continue.

Update URL to your new domian name

Duplicator will now finish the migration.

You can click on the ‘Admin Login’ button to enter the WordPress admin area of your website on the new domain name.

Finishing WordPress migration to new domain name

Step 4. Setting up Permanent 301 Redirects

Setting up a permanent 301 redirect is very important for both SEO and user experience.

This step will allow you to automatically redirect users and search engines to your new domain name.

In other words, whenever someone lands on one of your old posts or pages, they will be automatically redirected to your site on the new domain.

To setup a permanent 301 redirect, you need to connect to your old site using FTP and edit the .htaccess file.

This will be located in the same directory as your wp-includes or wp-admin folder. Open the .htaccess file and paste the following code at the very top:

#Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.newsite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Note: Replace newsite.com with your new domain in the above code.

Once you have applied these changes, then visit your old domain name. It should automatically redirect you to the new domain.

If it doesn’t, then it means the redirection is not setup properly, and your server likely doesn’t support redirect rules. You need to reach your web hosting’s support to get RewriteEngine turned on.

Step 5. Notifying Google About the Change

Now that you have moved WordPress to a new domain name and setup redirects, it is time to notify Google about the change of address. This will help Google find your new domain name quickly and start showing it in search results.

First, you need to add your new domain name to the Google Search Console. See step 1 in our Google Search Console guide for instructions.

After you have added your new site, you need to switch to the old version of Google Search Console.

Go to old version of Google Search Console

Next, you need to switch to your old domain name and then click on the gear icon at the top to launch change of address tool.

Change of address tool

On the next screen, Google Search Console will show you a step by step wizard to submit your change of address request.

First it will ask you to select your new site from the drop down menu. After that, click on the check button to test 301 redirects and then confirm verification.

Change of address for your old domain name

Finally, click on the submit button to send your address change request.

Notify Users About the Move to New Domain Name

While the 301 redirects do their job, it is always good to make a public announcement about the migration.

You can do this by simply writing a blog post on your new site and sharing it on your social media accounts.

If you have an email marketing list, then you should send a newsletter to let all your subscribers know.

This can be helpful in a lot of ways.

First and foremost, your users are more likely to remember the new domain once they read about it.

Second, you can ask your users to let you know if they see any bugs. You alone cannot test your site in all different type of browsers and system environments. It’s always helpful to have a fresh pair of eyes looking at it.

We hope that this tutorial helped you move your WordPress site to a new domain name. You may also want to see our guide on how to track your search keyword rankingsafter moving to new domain name.
