Arlo Security System announced, Arlo Ultra 4K security camera ships later in January

Just a few days ago, Arlo, the makers of the popular wire-free smart security cameras, became a standalone company, as it completed its spin-off from its former parent Netgear. Now at CES 2019, Arlo is showing off some new and upcoming products, including a new suite of devices under the Arlo Security System family.

The Arlo Security System, when it launches in the second half of 2019, will include the Arlo Multi-Sensor, a compact device that can be put nearly anywhere in the home. It can sense a number of different events, such as doors or windows opening, water leaks, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and motion inside the house. It can also be set up to trigger other Arlo devices, including its security cameras.

When links to the Arlo Smart Hub, the Arlo Siren will emit a very loud alarm sound and generate a red strobe light that should warn off any possible intruders. It can also be set up to create other sounds, such as a dog barking or a TV audio sound, to make an empty house sound like people are there.

Finally, the Arlo Remote lets users arm or disarm the security system without needing a smartphone app. Pricing for these products was not announced.

In addition, the new Arlo Ultra security camera will go on sale later in January, with prices starting at $399.99 for a one-camera system. The Arlo Ultra supports recording of security footage in 4K HDR video quality. It also has features like color night vision, a 180-degree field-of-view, an integrated spotlight, and two-way audio. The wireless design allows the Arlo Ultra to be mounted nearly anywhere. It also includes a magnetic mount, so it can be placed on walls, ceilings, and other hard-to-reach places.

Arlo also announced that the Arlo Ultra And Arlo Pro 2 cameras will add support for Apple’s HomeKit sometime in 2019. Finally, the company announced its new “Works with Arlo” program. Launching in the second half of 2019, it will allow third-party companies to link their smart home devices to Arlo products through the Arlo SmartHub.

Qualcomm hopes Alexa and cockpit platform boost car smarts

Qualcomm wants to be the go-to connectivity solution for the automotive industry and has several projects in the works to make that vision a reality.

The company today announced a new version of its Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platform, which will give car and truck makers more flexibility to customize their in-vehicle software offerings. Importantly, it supports artificial intelligence and natural language processing for smoother interactions between car and driver.

Editor’s Pick

Qualcomm is using Amazon‘s Alexa Assistant to demonstrate how this works. It allows drivers to ask the car for directions, information about nearby points of interest, as well as control media playback.

Talking to your car is just the tip of the iceberg, though.

Driver safety plays a big role in the new platform. It will use computer vision, object recognition, and AI to decipher the data created by in-car cameras, sensors, and GPS. This will eventually let cars talk to one another, particularly when approaching certain types of intersections, such as four-way stop signs.

Audi and Qualcomm create smart car and show it off in Las Vegas

Audi, Ducati, and Ford are some of the first to weigh Qualcomm’s new platform. All three are focusing on the safety aspect of the platform first. They wish to cut down in collisions between cars, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The city of Las Vegas has agreed to allow testing of Qualcomm-powered cars on some city streets.

There’s no word on when all this tech will reach consumers.

HTC Vive Pro Eye wants you to use your eyes to navigate the VR world

HTC Vive Pro Eye

  • The new HTC Vive Pro Eye virtual reality headset features eye-tracking technology.
  • With eye-tracking, users will not need a controller for specific tasks, using eye movements instead to navigate the VR world.
  • The company also launched the HTC Vive Cosmos, a simpler and easier headset for people just entering the VR ecosystem.

Today, at CES 2019, HTC took the stage to launch several new products and upgrades in its popular Vive virtual reality division.

The most notable product announcement is the HTC Vive Pro Eye (shown above), an upgraded version of its popular Vive Pro. The Vive Pro Eye’s standout feature is eye-tracking technology which will offer numerous benefits to VR gamers as well as enterprise customers.

Editor’s Pick

Since the Vive Pro Eye will track eye movements, it can optimize the virtual world in reaction to a user’s focus. In other words, if the user is looking straight ahead, there’s no reason to have the periphery in focus and rendering at full speed. Instead, the Vive Pro Eye will blur those sections of the image, saving processing power. HTC refers to this technique as “foveated rendering.”

HTC Vive Pro Eye through smartphone

Eye tracking can also be used in place of handheld controllers. A new VR baseball game called MLB Home Run Derby VR is played only using eye movements to navigate menus and perform in-game functions.

Additionally, enterprise customers can use eye tracking to better train and evaluate users. For example, the VR software Lockheed Martin uses to train new pilots will use eye tracking to examine reaction times and focus.

HTC also launched another new headset today, the HTC Vive Cosmos (shown below). Unlike the HTC Vive Pro, the Vive Cosmos features a simpler setup, removing the need for an external base station and including the ability to attach to a wider range of PCs. The Vive Cosmos will not feature eye tracking and will rely on handheld controllers.

HTC Vive Cosmos

“We found that over 85 percent of VR intenders believe that ease of use and set up is the most important factor to consider while purchasing a headset,” said Daniel O’Brien, general manager of HTC Vive in the Americas. “We believe Cosmos will make VR more easily accessible to those who may not have invested in VR before and also be a superior experience for VR enthusiasts.”

Finally, HTC also announced an exciting update for members of the Viveport subscription service: starting on Vive Day, April 5, 2019, Viveport will move to an unlimited subscription model known as Viveport Infinity. This will allow members to download and play any of the 500+ titles in the Viveport Infinity library with no restrictions.

Both the HTC Vive Pro Eye and the HTC Vive Cosmos will be available later in 2019. HTC did not disclose pricing for any of these new announcements.

Ring reveals new smart lights and a new video doorbell made for renters

Amazon acquired the company behind the Ring smart video doorbell less than a year ago. Since then, Ring has been busy expanding with new product launches. At CES 2019, it not only announced a new video doorbell that should expand its audience, but it also launched an all-new line of smart lights designed to offer more security for homes.

The new Ring Smart Lighting lineup includes several battery-powered smart lights that come on when motion is detected.  Here’s the full list, along with prices:

  • Ring Spotlight ($39.99) – Motion-activated, wire-free smart light that can be installed almost anywhere around the home, including above a garage, shed or porch.
  • Ring Pathlight ($29.99) – Motion-activated smart light that is installed along walkways, driveways and other high-traffic areas.
  • Ring Floodlight Battery ($49.99) – Wire-free, motion-activated smart light perfect for illuminating the driveway, yard, and walkways that features a combined 600 lumens and adjustable mounts and settings.
  • Ring Steplight ($17.99) – Motion-activated hands-free safety light that can illuminate stairs, decks, and porches for brightened security where you need it most.
  • Ring Motion Sensor ($24.99) – Connects to your Ring Smart Lighting, Doorbells, and Cams to activate lights and video streaming whenever motion is detected.

In addition, the Ring Smart Lighting lineup will include a wired floodlight that connects to your current electric box that will be priced at $69.99. There’s also a Ring Transformer for $99.99 that can replace your older transformer so you can put in smart features in your current outdoor lighting system.

Finally, there’s the Ring Bridge for $49.99, a hub device that can connect all of these lights, along with your Ring video doorbell and cameras. This will allow one Ring device to turn on all of your lights at night when motion is detected.

Pre-orders for these Ring Smart Lighting products will be available on Amazon soon, and they are scheduled to start shipping in early March.

Along with these lighting devices, the company announced the new Ring Door View Cam. This is a battery-powered device that’s designed to replace any existing door viewer or peephole. All you have to do is install both sides of the door with the Ring Door View Cam around the peephole with no drilling required. This is perfect for people who live in places like apartments, condos, rental houses or dorms who can’t or are not able to do extensive changes in their doors.

As with the other video doorbells from Ring, the Door View Cam lets you see who is at your door via your smartphone, even if you are away from your home. You can also speak with them through the door on your phone. It also has a sensor that turns the camera on if the person knocks, or does something else besides ring the doorbell. If the battery runs down, you can still see through the Door View Cam with its glass viewer.

The Ring Door View Cam will go on sale sometime later in 2019 for the price of $199.

TCL announces its first sets of headphones and soundbars

TCL

Chinese manufacturer TCL is going all-out at CES 2019 with four new lines of headphones and two new soundbars. These are the first TCL-branded headphones and soundbars.

Starting with the headphones, the four new product lines are SOCL, MTRO, ACTV, and ELIT. The SOCL line includes six options: three wired earbuds and three Bluetooth variants. The MTRO line consists of a pair of earbuds and a pair of over-the-ear headphones.

As the name suggests, the ACTV line is for those who go to the gym and exercise. To that end, the ACTV line features wired and Bluetooth versions of the ACTV100. The headphones feature a hook design that wraps around your ears to prevent fall-outs during workouts.

Finally, the ELIT line is for those who emphasize sound quality. The three headphones that comprise the ELIT line feature Hi-Res audio, in-line controls, and TCL’s Comfort Fit earcaps.

TCL’s wired headphones will be available starting February 1, while the wireless options will ship by the summer. No word on pricing for the headphones, though we might learn more during CES 2019.

Editor’s Pick

In addition to headphones, TCL also announced two soundbars: the Alto 5 and 7.

Both soundbars feature three listening modes and Bluetooth for wireless streaming. They also feature IR pass-through cables, wall-mounting kits, and “Plus” versions that include wireless subwoofers.

Consider the size of your TV before you take out your card. The Alto 5 is 31.5 inches wide and is meant for TVs 43 inches or larger. Meanwhile, the Alto 7 is 36 inches wide and meant for TVs 55 inches or larger.

TCL will launch the soundbars sometime during the spring. There’s no word yet on pricing.

GE’s Kitchen Hub is a huge, Android-powered touchscreen that mounts above your stove

Have you ever looked at the area above your stove and told yourself that would be the perfect place for a gigantic touchscreen? Well, GE’s answer to that question is the Kitchen Hub.

The Kitchen Hub is a 27-inch touchscreen that runs Android and supports Google Assistant. That means you can use your voice to bring up recipes, watch cooking videos, and control other smart home devices. You can also download and run apps like Netflix and Spotify to watch movies and listen to music while you cook.

In a purely extra move, GE threw in two cameras in the Kitchen Hub: an overhead camera to show what you’re cooking and a front-facing camera for video calls. These cameras aren’t necessary at all, but neither is the fact that the Kitchen Hub is a big touchscreen.

Lastly, the Kitchen Hub doubles as an exhaust vent that pulls the smoke away.

Editor’s Pick

Unfortunately, the Kitchen Hub does not triple as an over-the-range microwave. Also missing is any resistance against oil or water, a weird omission given the Kitchen Hub’s placement above your stove.

If that doesn’t bother you, then the prices might: $1,199 to $1,399, depending on if you want a matte or stainless steel finish. The Kitchen Hub goes on sale this May.

Paranoid Android’s Pie beta now available for certain Xiaomi phones

The team behind Android ROM Paranoid Android announced that the Android 9 Pie beta is available for five Xiaomi smartphones.

Those who have the following Xiaomi smartphones can download and run the Pie beta today:

Paranoid Android notes that some devices might get more beta updates than others due to device fixes and improvements by maintainers. Paranoid Android also stated that builds with the same date would have the same features.

If you don’t own any of the aforementioned Xiaomi smartphones, don’t fret. According to the announcement post, the Pie beta of Paranoid Android will be available for the Essential Phone, OnePlus 6/6T, Motorola Moto G5 Plus, and Xperia devices “in the near future.”

Editor’s Pick

More good news: Paranoid Android changed the way it develops its ROM to include Generic System Images (GSIs). The team said it saw “decent device compatibility,” though it’s still studying and experimenting with QSSI, Qualcomm’s interpretation of GSIs.

You can go here to download Paranoid Android’s QSSI build. The only officially-supported devices so far are the OnePlus 5 and 5T. The team said the build should be compatible with your device if it features the Snapdragon 835 processor, is Project Treble-ready, runs the OEM stock version of Pie, and does not use A/B partitioning.

You can visit Paranoid Android’s announcement post to find download links for the Pie beta.

January 2019 Android security patch arrives for Pixel devices

In the midst of CES 2019, Google has begun rolling out Android’s January security patch. This month’s update appears to be primarily focused on fixing video recording issues on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in addition to other bug fixes.

The January security patch fixes 13 various vulnerabilities in the Android Open Source Project. The most severe of these security bugs could “enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process.” Fortunately, things were fixed before anyone could use the vulnerabilities to harm any users.

For Pixel devices, this update “Improved audio quality when recording videos” on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. No specific bugs other than two security vulnerability fixes were noted for the rest of Google’s hardware.

Unlike with the last two months, owners of the original Pixel and Pixel XL don’t have to wait for January’s security patch. This month, Google appears to have the updates prepared and available for every Pixel device.

Of course, with the new year, we have to say goodbye to the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. As Google only promises security updates for three years after the release of a phone, we have officially reached the end of support date for both handsets.

If you don’t want to wait for the January security patch to make its way to your phone or tablet, you can download the latest factory image or OTA file from the links below. From there, you can either flash a fresh build to your phone or sideload the OTA update.

Alien: Blackout will try to make you scream on Android this January

The Alien movie franchise remains one of the most popular sci-fi series ever made, and it has spawned tons of great spin-offs in novels, comic books and games.

Apparently, you just can’t keep a good biomechanical Xenomorph monster down as today, we got the first details on Alien: Blackout, an upcoming mobile game coming to Android (and iOS) devices on Jan. 24.

Editor’s Pick

According to co-developer D3 Go’s website, the game centers on Amanda Ripley, the daughter of the movie series’ best known human character Ellen Ripley.

Amanda was also the central character in the critically acclaimed survival horror game Alien: Isolation, which was released in 2014 for PCs and consoles by Sega. Alien: Blackout may serve as a (sort-of) sequel to that earlier game.

According to the game’s official description, Amanda Ripley finds herself in trouble again, this time on board a Weyland-Yutani space station (showing once again that the real villain of this franchise is an evil human corporation). In the game, you must control Ripley and the station’s remaining crew members as they try to escape, without being killed off by the latest version of the series’ titular alien.

The game will make you use the station’s holographic map, along with surveillance cameras and a motion tracker, so you and the crew can navigate through the station and avoid being picked off. There will be seven levels to complete and the game is supposed to have some replayability as you try different paths and make alternate decisions.

There’s no word on if this game will cost something upfront, or if it will be a free-to-play title. Hopefully, the price won’t make you scream.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro update brings better face unlock, more natural colors in AI mode

Huawei Mate 20 Pro camera app.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is arguably the most feature-packed smartphone in the last 12 months, offering everything from a triple camera setup to reverse wireless charging. The company has delivered several noteworthy updates too, and it’s not quite finished yet.

Huawei has just issued another update, labelled 9.0.0.171, according to GSMArena. Huawei’s new update weighs in at 482MB, so what does it bring to the table?

For starters, the company has optimized face unlock for “certain scenarios.” In plain English, this should mean facial recognition is better in tricky conditions. But the improvements go beyond facial unlocking.

Huawei has also tweaked photo quality when using the Master AI option, saying photos should now have “more natural, authentic colors.” For what it’s worth, our own Bogdan Petrovan didn’t notice a big difference between AI and non-AI shots in his Mate 20 Pro review. Nevertheless, Huawei’s camera app also lets you switch between three color modes, so you can always go for a more saturated appearance if you prefer.

Editor’s Pick

The camera tweaks don’t stop there, as Huawei has also fixed discrepancies between the preview and the actual photo, as well as the camera failing to launch in “certain scenarios.”

Finally, the Chinese manufacturer has included Google’s December 2018 security patches in the update. You might have to wait a few days or weeks to see this update, especially if you’re on a carrier version of the Mate 20 Pro.

It marks the latest in a series of updates for the late 2018 flagship. Previous updates have enabled AI Zoom, better in-display fingerprint scanning, improved photo quality, and several video-related effects.

The LG Q9 is officially revealed with an old OS and processor for a high price

LG

LG decided to announce a new addition to its Q series of mid-range phones today in South Korea, even though it’s also making big announcements this week at CES 2019. As it turns out, the new LG Q9 smartphone has some pretty old hardware and software inside and a fairly high price to boot.

The successor to the LG Q8, the LG Q9 (via PhoneArena) has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, first released in 2016, inside. It also ships with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. This decision shows that even though Android 9 Pie has been available for several months, phone makers still want to stick with launching handsets with older software.

The LG Q9 does have some good features such as a large 6.1-inch 3,120 x 1,440 display and some excellent audio additions. Just like its flagship-level siblings, the LG Q9 will feature a Boombox speaker, a Hi-Fi Quad DAC system, and DTS:X stereo support.

Editor’s Pick

The handset also has an IP68 water and resistance rating, which means that it should survive in up to a meter of water for 30 minutes. It also has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. However, the LG Q9 only has one 16MP rear camera, an 8MP front-facing selfie camera, and a pretty small 3,000mAh battery.

The LG Q9 will go on sale in South Korea later in January in Carmine Red, New Aurora Black, and New Moroccan Blue colors for 499,400 won, or about $445. That’s pretty expensive for a phone that has some very old hardware and software. There’s no word on when it might come to other markets.

Asus will release a new version of the great Chromebook Flip later in 2019

Asus

The Asus Chromebook Flip remains one of the best Chromebook notebook models ever released, thanks in part to its light aluminum body and its 360-degree display hinge. Today, as part of its CES 2019 product lineup, Asus announced a new model, the Chromebook Flip C434.

According to Asus’ press release, the Chromebook Flip C434 will have a larger 14-inch 1,920 x 1,080 display in a body that normally would only allow for a 13-inch screen. The bezels on the new Chromebook Flip are only 5mm so owners will get an excellent view of their content.

Additionally, the display will still have a 360-degree hinge so you can flip it and use it as a big touchscreen tablet.

Editor’s Pick

The body of the Chromebook Flip C434 is all aluminum, not only on the lid. Inside, you can decide to have one of Intel’s 8th generation Core processor (Intel Core M3-8100Y, Intel Core i5-8200Y, or Intel Core i7-8500Y), and there’s support for up to 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB of onboard storage.  You also have two USB Type-C ports, a standard USB port, and a 48Wh battery, although there’s no word yet on how long it will last on a single charge.

Asus says the starting price for the Chromebook Flip C434 will be $569, but has not yet announced a release date, stating it will be available “in the coming months.”

Alcatel’s 1C and 1X hands-on: Budget as budget gets

CES 2019 is in full swing, and Alcatel has announced a few refreshes to existing devices for the new year.

Alcatel 1C

The first device in the CES lineup is the Alcatel 1C. This phone was made for emerging markets and will be sold at an ultra-low cost, at a suggested retail value of under 70 Euros. It brings a Spreadtrum SC7731E processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage, making it one of the most affordable devices we’ve seen in 2019. The Alcatel 1C runs on Android Go (based on 8.1 Oreo), a lightweight version of the platform tailored to devices with 1GB of RAM or less.

The phone is made of a polycarbonate material with a micro-textured lattice design, and features a microUSB cable on the bottom with a headphone jack up top. The 1C features a single 5MP camera on the back and a 2MP front shooter, so while it probably won’t take great photos, they’ll get the job done for those that just need a cheap camera. It comes with a 2,000mAh battery, which seems extremely small for a smartphone, but the 4.95-inch 720p display probably won’t use up too much energy.

The spec that makes this phone truly budget is the fact that it can only operate on up to 3G networks. It’s strange to see a device with no 4G support in 2019, but Alcatel tells me it made this move to save on cost. This device would probably make a better media player than a smartphone, but it’s nice to have to option if you wanted to use it as an emergency pay-as you go phone.

The Alcatel 1C will come in volcano black, enamel blue, and blush pink.

Alcatel 1X

The second device in the lineup is the Alcatel 1X. This is a step up from the 1C in specs, coming with a MediaTek MT6739WW processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. This device is running with the full version of Android 8.1 Oreo, and comes with two a single 5MP shooter on the front and two cameras on the rear. The primary shooter is 13MP (interpolated to 16MP with software) while the secondary shooter is 2MP. The second camera enables things like bokeh mode in the camera app, a feature usually reserved for more expensive devices.

The 1X features a 5.5-inch 720p display and a 3,000mAh battery, so it should last quite a bit longer than the 1C. With 4G capabilities enabled in this device as well, this is a phone you might actually use as your primary phone. This device will be available for under 120 Euros beginning in Q1 of 2019, and will come in pebble black and pebble blue.

You can get the Ambeo 3D soundbar from Sennheiser this May

A shot of the Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar in a living room.

The Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar is fully compatible with Dolby Atmos as well.

Sennheiser might be best known for its premium headphones, but that isn’t the only aspect of audio that the company is interested in these days. The company has been experimenting with consumer products that take advantage of spatial audio via its Ambeo 3D program. We were fairly impressed when we got a chance to check out their Ambeo headphones, which enable the wearer to record spatial 3D audio on the go, and now Sennheiser is announcing that its new Ambeo soundbar will be available for purchase in May of 2019.

The Ambeo soundbar has 13 drivers that can mimic the directionality of a 5.1.4 surround sound system

Any home theater lover will tell you that one of the best ways to enhance movie night is by upgrading the audio. While the Ambeo soundbar appeared last year at CES 2018, it was just a prototype at the time. Now the company is gearing up to make it available to consumers later this year — which is good news for home audio enthusiasts because this thing is packed with features. The Ambeo soundbar has 13 drivers that can mimic a 5.1.4 surround sound system without the need of multiple speakers or external subwoofers. Normally, getting that kind of experience would require a number of speakers perfectly positioned around the room, but this soundbar manages all on its own. It will also automatically calibrate itself to whatever room you put it in, and optimize itself accordingly thanks to external microphones.

The Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar features 13 drivers to help simulate 3D space.

On the inside, Sennheiser spared no expense. The Ambeo soundbar is fully compatible with MPEG-H, DTS:X, and even Dolby Atmos, which makes sense considering 3D spatial sound goes hand-in-hand with the object-based audio format. It comes with five presets that adjusts the frequencies to one of five scenarios. You can choose between movie, music, sports, news, and neutral, each with their own characteristic tuning to get you the best sound from your comfortable spot on the couch.

If you prefer to be a little more hands-on with how your sound is equalized, there’s also a free app for Android and iOS that will give you that option. For added convenience, the Ambeo soundbar also has Google Chromecast built-in, as well as Bluetooth, HDMI eARC/CEC, an optical audio input, an aux (RCA) input, and three extra HDMI inputs as well. In short, there’s no shortage of connectivity options, and because the soundbar connects to your home: WiFi updating the speaker in the future will be a breeze.

Pictured is the Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar mounted to a wall

The soundbar can simulate a surround sound system all by itself.

The Ambeo Soundbar will be available in May 2019 and will retail for $2,499.

LG CES 2019: Press conference livestream, start time, and what to expect

We will also see some new smart kitchen appliances and likely more audio products to add to the three soundbars with Google Assistant and Dolby Atmos support which it has already revealed.

LG’s announcement-focused CES 2019 press conference is scheduled for Jan. 7, 8AM PT. LG also has a more general keynote planned for 6:30PM PT later that day.

Intel CES 2019: Press conference livestream, start time, and what to expect

Intel is rumored to be preparing a new 10-core 14nm CPU codenamed Comet Lake that could be unveiled at CES 2019. Even more intriguing, Intel might be preparing to introduce its own discrete graphics card.

What does this mean exactly? Well, Intel historically isn’t a big player in the high-end PC graphics game, with its graphics chips mostly used in lower-end devices and laptops. If this latest rumor proves correct, Intel might be preparing to challenge Nvidia in a big way.

Intel’s CES 2019 press conference is scheduled for Jan. 7, 4PM PT. We’ll update this post with the livestream as soon as it becomes available.

  • San Francisco: 4PM

Sony has traditionally brought new Xperia products to CES, but according to our sources Sony’s mobile division might be taking it a bit easier for 2019.

That doesn’t mean Sony’s conference won’t be a must-watch, however. Expect to see plenty of TVs, Bluetooth speakers and other audio devices, smart home gadgets, and more.

Jam Audio debuts lightest true wireless earbuds yet at CES 2019

Jam Audio The Jam Live Free includes a portable charging case and IPX4-certified earbuds.

Today, Jam Audio debuted its newest true wireless earbuds the Jam Live Free at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. The earbuds are IPX4 water resistant and afford up to six hours of playback. When the battery life runs low, listeners can rely on the compact charging case, which provides an added 72 hours of juice.

These affordable true wireless earbuds are even lighter than the company’s previous iterations like the Jam Ultra and the more recent Live True earbuds, both of which feature a nearly identical cloth-wrapped design and water-resistant build. While both products had trouble with battery life, the Live Free claims to double playback time, an ambitious assertion.

Jam Audio The IPX4 earbuds provide six hours of playback and are the company’s lightest true wireless earbuds to date.

We’ll be sure to provide more information when it’s released. In the meantime, the Jam Live Free will be available in August 2019 for $89.99.

The JBL Link Bar is alive again, along with the new JBL Link Drive

  • JBL just announced the incoming availability of the JBL Link Bar and the JBL Link Drive.
  • The JBL Link Bar features Android TV, Chromecast, and Google Assistant in one sleek soundbar.
  • JBL Link Drive brings Google Assistant into your vehicle.

At CES 2019 in Las Vegas, JBL announced the upcoming launch of two Google Assistant-based products: the JBL Link Bar and the JBL Link Drive.

You might remember the JBL Link Bar from its debut at Google I/O back in May of 2018. The sleek-looking soundbar aims to do it all, with Android TV, Google Assistant, and Chromecast support all baked in.

JBL opened pre-orders for the Link Bar shortly after its reveal, but then… nothing. Eventually, the Link Bar disappeared from the JBL site entirely, leaving consumers wondering if they would ever be able to buy one.

Now, JBL has announced that the Link Bar will hit JBL.com and select store shelves sometime this Spring. The device will retail for $400 on its own, and its companion subwoofer (to give you better bass response) will cost an additional $300.

While $700 sounds like a lot, having one high-end audio device do everything you need — from casting music, to streaming movies, to operating your smart home — is a pretty nifty thing.

In addition to the return of the JBL Link Bar, the company also announced the JBL Link Drive. The Link Drive is kind of a Google Home for your car by acting as a bridge between your phone and your car stereo. Simply plug the Link Drive into a cigarette lighter port, pair it with both your phone and your stereo, and then issue “OK Google” commands without needing to touch your phone.

The JBL Link Drive also features a 2.1A USB port for charging your device on the go. The Link Drive will also land sometime this Spring at a retail price of $60.

Check out our hands-on of the JBL Link Bar at the link below.

Your next laptop or smartwatch might have Tile’s item-finding tech

Tile announced several major Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) chip makers will integrate Tile’s item-finding technology into their Bluetooth chips. That means you could find laptops, wearables, and cameras with Tile.

Tile specifically announced partnerships with Qualcomm, Dialog Semiconductor, Silicon Labs, and Toshiba. These partnerships will eventually allow product makers to enable products with Tile technology through BLE chips and offer “Find with Tile” location-tracking features.

To that end, Tile also announced partnerships with Sennheiser, Sol Republic, Plantronics, and Anker. All four companies will release Tile-enabled products in the coming months.

Finally, Tile also partnered up with Upright to include Tile technology into the Upright Go this year. The Upright Go is a posture-training wearable that you place on your back.

This is great news for Tile, if not an inevitable outcome. Even though Tile sells physical trackers and a suite of software features, the company can significantly expand its reach with the aforementioned partnerships.

The partnerships will also help Tile’s bottom line since the company is basically licensing its reference design. Either way, expect a slew of products to feature Tile’s branding and technology in the coming months and years.
