Is Bitcoin right for you?

It’s a question on many people’s minds. The meteoric rise of Bitcoin has led to many kicking themselves for not getting into Bitcoin earlier, but the current uncertainty surrounding the cryptocurrency has those same people hesitating to jump into the game at this late stage.

So, should you get into Bitcoin? Are you too late? What do you stand to lose, and what do you stand to gain?

As a disclaimer, this article promotes a set of Bitcoin courses rather than answer that question outright. The reasons for this are:

  1. the topic is way too involved to resolve in a single article, and
  2. that answer varies from person to person, and also
  3. these were the courses recommended to us when some members of the team sought to better understand Bitcoin.

The courses are taught by Ravinder Deol, who has been deeply involved in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology since early 2013, just as the ball really got rolling. After realizing that his acquaintances had little understanding of what he was up to, but were curious about it, he started teaching live classes to educate people. These became so popular that he expanded his platform to an online format. Now he has over 83,000 students.

Deol’s classes are unique in that they are inexpensive. A lot of the courses that we see at AAPicks can run anywhere from $200 to $800 all by themselves, but Deol is a believer in cryptocurrency and wants to keep the barrier for entry low. Most of his classes only cost $11, but they still contain dozens of lectures and hours of video content.

Recently, Deol has combined 6 of his most popular courses into a “Mastery Bundle.” Altogether, that’s 257 lessons focused on taking you from Bitcoin n00b to cryptomancer.

This includes his most popular offering, The Complete Bitcoin Course.

Should you get into Bitcoin?

We figure, if you want to really know if Bitcoin is right for you, the best way to find out is to learn more about Bitcoin. Then you can make an informed decision about whether or not to invest.

Here’s the bundle summary:

If you purchased these separately, you’d wind up paying $100. However, Deol has partnered with TechDeals to offer a limited 70% discount, so you grab all 6 for just $29. At time of writing, this offer will last 4 days.

For those curious about Bitcoin and who wish they had a better understanding of it, we’ve found this to be an inexpensive and comprehensive way to get started.

If you’re kind of ‘meh’ about Bitcoin, then why the hell are you even reading this article?

Anyway, if you’d like to learn about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general from a guy who has been in the business for half a decade, click the button below to get the full details on all the courses!

  • Buyers must activate the phone on a monthly installment plan.
  • The promotion includes $300 in bill credits and $100 instant savings.

If the Google Pixel 2 XL suits your fancy and you want to sign up for Verizon, Best Buy offers a deal on the phone that significantly lightens the load on your wallet.

Like the smaller Pixel 2, the Pixel 2 XL runs Android Oreo out of the box and is guaranteed to get updates from Google through October 2020.

As previously mentioned, Best Buy’s deal on the Verizon Pixel 2 XL is only for today. You can grab the phone at the link below.

Essential Phone to come in three new, limited edition colors (Update)

essential phone new colors Essential

Update (2/16): On February 15th Essential announced the three new colors highlighted below. Today the company also unveiled a fourth color on Twitter, Halo Gray. The new color also has a special trick up its sleeve, it supports Amazon’s Alexa out of the box. This is a special feature reserved only for the new gray color and not any of the other existing color.

  • Essential will release three new color schemes for the PH-1: Ocean Depths, Stellar Gray, and Copper Black.
  • Each color format is limited edition, and go on sale at predetermined times this week and next.
  • There are no internal upgrades with these devices, just new exterior coloring.

If you’ve been holding off on grabbing an Essential Phone because you need some more color in your life, then today is your lucky day! Starting at 12:00 PM PST, Essential Phones in a new color, “Ocean Depths,” will go on sale at Essential.com.

The Ocean Depths color scheme features a teal back with gold edging around the sides of the phone as well as the fingerprint sensor on the back. The color scheme is quite striking and will surely help your phone stand out in the sea of black slates out there.

Essential

Next week, on February 20, the PH-1 in Stellar Gray will go on sale at 12:00 PM PST. The back is a matte gray which gives the phone a smooth touch but comfortable grip. The edging is a bit lighter gray, giving it a minimalist, but still interesting look.

Essential

Also next week, on February 22, you can get an Essential Phone in Copper Black. This color scheme looks very similar to the traditional “black on black” scheme of the Essential Phone, except that the edging is a shiny copper line. This would look really cool with a copper/gold colored wallpaper covering the all-screen display.

Essential

Editor’s Pick

All three color variants are $599 and will only be available at the shop at Essential.com. The company is emphasizing that these colors are limited edition, and thus could sell out quickly. If you are interested in getting your hands on one, it’s highly advisable for you to be on Essential.com at noon the day they go live!

Also, these phones are internally identical to the original Essential Phone; all that’s changed is the exterior color scheme.

What do you think of these new colors? Will you be grabbing a new PH-1?

Oreo update will strip Night Mode from Sony smartphones

  • The Night Mode feature in Sony Xperia XA1 devices cuts down on blue light when viewing the phone at night.
  • Sony, in a Twitter conversation with a user, said that it would remove the feature in the Oreo update for the devices.
  • Since the XA1 lineup are the only phones with the feature, all Sony devices will lack Night Mode after the update to Oreo.

If you own a smartphone in the Sony Xperia XA1 lineup and enjoy the Night Mode feature, we unfortunately have some bad news for you: the upcoming Oreo update for your device will strip out Night Mode.

The Night Mode feature built into the Nougat version of Sony’s Android skin for the XA1 lineup cuts down on blue light to make viewing the phone display more comfortable at night time. The popular contention is that straining your eyes looking at blue light makes it harder for you to fall asleep. In response, many popular apps cut out most of the blue light either by a manual setting or automatically at sunset, depending on the user’s choice.

Sony built the feature right into the operating system for the XA1 series, eliminating the need for users to install a third-party app. However, once users upgrade to Oreo and lose the feature, they’ll have to turn to third-party apps once again.

Sony knows this and even says as much in a Twitter conversation with a user, which is where the news originated that the company will remove the feature. You can see the relevant parts of that conversation below.

xperia xa1 night mode GSM Arena

Since the XA1 line of Sony smartphones are the only devices that have the Night Mode feature, and the Twitter message states that the company has no plans to add the functionality into Oreo variants in the future, this pretty much spells the end for Night Mode across the entire Sony lineup.

XA1 users who are disappointed to see this feature vanish should check the Google Play Store for a third-party solution, or consider looking into other devices that have a similar function baked in, like the OnePlus 5T and the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Google offers new Project Fi subscribers $80 off any Fi-ready phone

  • Google has reduced its Project Fi-ready phones for new subscribers, saving them $80.
  • The money saved will be paid back as credit after device activation.
  • The deal is ongoing until February 28.

Google is offering $80 off any Project Fi-ready phone when you pick up a new subscription. The deal is running until February 28 and applies to the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Google Pixel XL and Moto X4 (Android One).

Project Fi is Google’s very own smartphone network. It’s unique in several ways, but most notably for letting users pay only for the mobile data they consume each month.

Though there have been workarounds to get it running on other devices, Google’s approved handsets are the way to go for the guaranteed experience. The current discount offered on these arrives as credit on your account after the device is activated, and below you’ll find the cost of them after the saving is applied:

  • Google Pixel 2: $569
  • Google Pixel 2 XL: $769
  • Google Pixel XL: $469
  • Moto X4 (Android One): $169

These represent pretty great savings, particularly on the Pixel XL and Moto X4, as these were just on sale a couple of weeks ago through Project Fi for $580 and $250 respectively (and they first went on sale for around $700 and $400). If you take out a group plan, you can also take advantage of this for more than one person/device (see the full terms and conditions here).

In related news, Google has also begun contacting seemingly long-term fans of its devices with exclusive discounts on its Pixel phones—read more about that at the link.

ZTE launches Axon 7 Android 8.0 Oreo beta program in the US (Updated)

Update (02/16): ZTE has released an official statement regarding its Axon 7 Android 8.0 Oreo US beta which addresses the switch from the OEM’s MiFavor UI to “near-stock Android”.

“At ZTE, we listen to our consumers, and one of their requests was to get Android O on the Axon 7, and we are excited to make it happen,” said Jeff Yee, ZTE’s vice president of product marketing and strategy. He goes on to reference the feedback from the Z-Community forums, while the press release notes that the switch to near-stock Android was heavily influenced by consumer requests.

As for the update itself, ZTE provided a list of the changes and improvements that will come to the Axon 7 with the OS upgrade:

  • Improved battery life
  • View two apps at once through picture-in-picture (PiP) mode
  • Google Play Protect, which scans over 50 billion apps per day to ensure your device is safe
  • Notification dots to quickly see what’s new
  • Faster boot speed when powering on the device
  • Android Instant apps, allowing users to get into apps without having to install
  • Minimized background activity in the applications used least
  • Autofill, which, with user permission, remembers logins to important apps

Original story (02/14): ZTE has announced an Android 8.0 Oreo beta program for Axon 7 users in the US. The Chinese OEM confirmed that it was testing Oreo internally just a few weeks ago, but it now wants a limited number of users to help out ahead of a public release.

A Z-Community moderator confirmed the beta in a forum post earlier today. The post calls on Axon 7 users with a US model (A2017U) on the latest build (B35) to apply for the program, noting that due to limited space, the first wave of beta testers will be chosen based on their “familiarity with Android”.

Editor’s Pick

While there isn’t an exact timeframe given for the beta, the post does confirm that ZTE will be testing in phases. If you’re interested in apply, be sure to head here and fill in the details in the linked Google Form.

The Axon 7 originally launched way back in the middle of 2016 running Android Marshmallow and later Nougat.

There were initially some question marks over whether the Axon 7 would be skipped over for the next major OS upgrade, especially following the release of the experimental Axon M and then reports that direct successor, now known as the Axon 9, was in the works.

Thankfully for fans of the cult classic device, ZTE confirmed late last year that it would bring Oreo to the ‘flagship killer’. The update is also expected to deliver a “pure” Android experience thanks to a new UI dubbed “Stock+”.

While Axon 7 users may have to wait until at least April for a public build of Android 8.0 Oreo, the beta announcement is at least a step in the right direction. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Google offering up to $200 off Pixel 2 phones for some “loyal Nexus owners”

Google appears to be running a new promotion that knocks 20 percent off the price of the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL. Unfortunately, the offer is only open to “loyal Nexus owners” that have seemingly been handpicked by Google.

News of the deal began circulating on Reddit and via Android Police readers earlier today after a number of users opened their inbox and found an email with the subject line “20% off Pixel 2, just for you”.

Editor’s Pick

The first line of the email states that the offer is Google’s way of saying thank you for being a Nexus owner. You can see this in the screenshot below.

If you’ve been lucky enough to receive the email, you have until February 28th to redeem the discount via Google’s online store. As this is automatically applied at checkout, you won’t be able to transfer the saving to another person, although I suppose you could buy one for a (trustworthy) friend or family member and get them to pay you back.

The saving can be applied to all models of the second-generation Pixel family, so the higher you go the higher the saving. This drops the Pixel 2 64 GB to $519 (was $649), the Pixel 2 128 GB to $599 (was $749), the Pixel 2 XL 64 GB to $679 (was $849), and the Pixel 2 XL 128 GB to $759 (was $949). Android Police

There’s no disputing that this is a fantastic offer, but the actual eligibility criteria is something of a mystery.

For starters, it seems that only consumers in the US have received emails. This has understandably upset former or current Nexus users in other regions. There’s certainly no sign of a promo email in my inbox over here in the UK. That’s despite me having bought a Nexus 4, 5, and 6.

Likewise, some users from the US, many of whom claim to have owned a least two or three Nexus devices in the past, have also apparently missed out on the offer, while some others with only a single Nexus phone to their name have received the email.

Have you been deemed to be a “loyal Nexus owner”? Let us know in the comments.

Android Wear Oreo update tracker (Update: More watches receive Oreo)

Update (02/12): Another handful of Android Wear devices are receiving the Oreo update. Google posted an update about the new devices in its Android Wear support pages (via Android Police) yesterday, though its terminology is a little unclear.

Google says the devices below are “currently pursuing” the Android Wear Oreo update. We don’t know if that means it’s rolling out, about to roll out, or rolling out in a year’s time, but the update has already been spotted on the Huawei Watch 2 so it’s likely happening now or very soon for all of them. Here’s the list:

  • Casio PRO TREK Smart WSD-F20
  • Casio WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch
  • Huawei Watch 2
  • Mobvoi Ticwatch S & E
  • Polar M600
  • ZTE Quartz

Regarding the Huawei Watch 2, there are reports that the update disables the Android Pay app outside of the US and UK. This was never officially made available for Android Wear in other regions but people had been using it without a problem. If you’re an Android Pay user in another territory, might want to think twice about upgrading.

For the full list of watches receiving the Oreo update, head to the coverage underneath.

Google has announced the rollout of Android Oreo for Android Wear. While not as significant an update as Android Wear 2.0 was, the new Oreo software will nonetheless bring some useful tweaks, including a Touch Lock — supposed to help in wet conditions — notification channels, battery improvements, and adjustable vibration strength (you can read about what else is included in the update here).

Now, Google has revealed a list of Android Wear devices set to receive the update on its Android Wear help page, though we don’t know when individual watches will receive it. We’ll be tracking the progress of the Android Wear Oreo update deployment in the coming weeks and months in this article and you can find out what we know so far below.

Which smartwatches will get the Android Oreo update?

According to Google, these are the smartwatches due to receive Android Oreo:

  • Diesel Full Guard
  • Emporio Armani Connected
  • Fossil Q Control
  • Fossil Q Explorist
  • Michael Kors Access Grayson

BlackBerry Motion now available in more European countries

  • BlackBerry announced the Motion’s availability across countries in the European Union.
  • A handful of accessories are also available alongside the phone.
  • BlackBerry originally announced the Motion in October 2017, with the phone previously available in Canada, the U.S., and the Middle East.

Already available in Canada, the U.S., the Middle East, and some European markets, the BlackBerry Motion is available in more countries in the European Union.

The Motion is available for €469 in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the U.K.

Alongside the Motion are some accessories, such as a hard shell case, flip case, and tempered glass screen protector.  The hard shell case goes for €35, while the tempered glass screen protector and flip case sell for €10 and €50, respectively.

The Motion features a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 625 processor, 4 GB of RAM, dual SIM card slots, a big 4,000 mAh battery, and compatibility with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0. It also has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.

Editor’s Pick

We enjoyed our time with the Motion and cited its long-lasting battery, industrial design, and stock-like Android experience with useful BlackBerry add-ons. We dinged the phone for its limited availability, though that is somewhat rectified with the Motion’s availability across the EU.

Another concern is software. The Motion still runs Android Nougat, though BlackBerry promised an update to Oreo sometime this year.

Even so, the Motion is a smartphone that, while a tad over-expensive for what it is, remains a good choice in the mid-range market.
