Google removes View Image button in image search results

  • Without any warning, Google removed the View Image button from image search results.
  • Also removed is the “Search by Image” button, but the “Visit” button remains.
  • The moves were made to deter image theft and encourage searchers to visit full pages instead of just the image.

In a move that will no doubt frustrate many people, Google removed the View Image button in all Google image searches today. If you visit images.google.com and perform a search query, selecting an image will no longer give you the option to view that image on its own.

Google gave no direct explanation for the change, although one can readily assume it was to cut down on image theft and lost ad revenue. The View Image button gave bots an easy way to pull images from all over the web and use for whatever nefarious purposes imaginable, and when visitors pull just an image from the site, they don’t see any of the site’s advertisements or even have an opportunity to engage with the content surrounding the image.

The news broke from the official Google Search Liaison Twitter account. In the statement about removing the View Image button, an emphasis was made that the Visit button remains. Now, when you search for an image, you will have to visit the website in its entirety to grab the image for your own use.

This move was likely made in response to the partnership Google made with Getty Images just days ago, which was put in place to help reduce copyright infringement on the internet.

Editor’s Pick

With the amount of copyrighted material that gets used online without any accreditation or permission, sites have already been making images harder and harder to download. Many sites convert traditional image formats like JPEG and PNG to different formats that browsers will not allow you to save easily. Traditionally, you would be given the option to “Save image as…” when right-clicking an image, but with these new formats that option does not appear.

Granted, it is still somewhat easy to open up the browser’s code explorer and find the raw image link that way. But for the vast amount of web users, this would be beyond their skill level. What Google is really trying to do here is stop the average user from having an easy way to download images they don’t own and of which they are not a rights holder.

Savvy Google image search users will notice that the “Search by Image” button has been removed as well. However, you can still do a reverse image search from the search bar of Google Images, and by right-clicking an image and performing a Google search.

Google Assistant might be in 52 countries, 17 more languages this year

  • A leaked image from a slideshow presentation suggests Google has big plans for Assistant in 2018.
  • If the image is to be believed, Assistant will be in 52 countries and 17 more languages by the end of the year.
  • The leak should be taken with a large amount of salt, as some details are suspect.

Right now, Google Assistant is only available in eight languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese. Likewise, the Google Home hardware is only officially available in seven countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Everyone else? You’re out of luck.

It seems that could change sometime this year. According to an image leaked from a presentation at the Digital News Initiative in Amsterdam, Google plans to make Assistant available in 17 more languages across a total of 52 countries. That’s more than a 200% increase on both fronts.

Editor’s Pick

Now, this doesn’t come directly from Google and therefore should be taken with several pounds of salt. The presentation at the DNI conference featured a map, depicted in the tweet below. As you can see, the map says nothing about Google, Google Assistant, or Google Home. It’s a map of the world with some parts white and some parts blue, and a title that just says, “More Locales in 2018.”

The person who tweeted the map is a journalist from the Netherlands who was in attendance at the conference. His caption under the graph roughly translates to, “The first official announcement by Google: Google Assistant is coming to the Netherlands this year (we are blue on the map!)” That may seem like pretty solid evidence, but the other slides he tweeted out from the conference have nothing to do with Google Assistant, so it seems strange that Google would throw that in there.

If true though, this would be a huge boon for people outside of Google’s current list of Assistant-friendly countries, and represent yet another massive push by the company to get Assistant and related Home products into as many hands as possible. But whether this will all happen this year at this fast of a pace is exceptionally suspect for right now.

Alcatel 5, 3V and 1X to arrive February 24

alcatel 2018 lineup Alcatel

  • The official Alcatel Twitter account revealed three new phones that will arrive on February 24.
  • The Alcatel 5, Alcatel 3V, and Alcatel 1X are budget-friendly phones with 18:9 displays and fingerprint readers on the back.
  • Details are pretty firm on the Alcatel 5 and 3V, but the 1X is thin for information.

We had a blast at CES 2018 taking the three new Alcatel devices for a spin, but we left with no release dates. Now, straight from the official Alcatel Twitter account, we do: The Alcatel 5, Alcatel 3V, and Alcatel 1X all will land on February 24.

The three phones will represent the three different pricing and performance tiers Alcatel is going after: the 5 series for the budget flagships, the 3 series for the mid-tier options, and the 1 for the most affordable lineup. As of right now, we don’t have reliable pricing on any of the Alcatel devices coming on the 24, but we speculate that the Alcatel 5 will come in just under $300 and the 3V for just over $200.

Editor’s Pick

We covered the Alcatel 5 at length in this article, and are pretty confident it will come with a 5.7-inch, IPS LCD in an 18:9 aspect ratio and HD+ 1,440 x 720 resolution. Inside, it will likely have an octa-core MediaTek chipset, 3 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage, expandable via microSD. Outside, there will be a fingerprint scanner, and a single rear camera, most likely with a 12 MP sensor.

Overall, the Alcatel 5 looks like a stunning device at a really low price point.

The 3V, which we talk about a lot here, is expected to have a bigger 6-inch, 2160 x 1080 display. Inside, it’s likely to run on a quad-core MediaTek chip, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of internal storage space. On the exterior, expect to find a fingerprint scanner and dual cameras: a 16 MP and 2 MP working in tandem.

With the 1X, we are kind of in the dark. At CES, we held a matte device with a single rear camera, a fingerprint sensor on the back, and a smaller, lower-resolution 18:9 display. As for the hardware and pricing, it’s all speculation at this point, but expect to be in sub-$200 range.

These phones are slated to go on sale two days before Mobile World Congress 2018 officially begins, so we will more than likely see final specs for the three new models before then.

Are you okay with Excel but want to become a master? Here are the 4 courses you need

Microsoft Excel is arguably one of the most important and widely used programs in the business world. Indeed, proficiency in Excel is often a make-or-break point of interest in job interviews.

A lot of people who grew up around computers, like most of our readers, can whip up a pie chart or two if they need to. However, the real Excel wizards are able to unlock the full capabilities of this powerful program and manipulate data like Dr. Manhattan toying with molecules.

If you want to get on that level, your standard practice of trial and error with a mix of Google Fu will work… eventually. In the age of the internet, you can brute force just about anything if you’re willing to pore over enough cryptic help forums and semi-outdated how to tutorials.

Excel with Business has bundled together 4 of their most popular courses.

However, if you want to achieve God-tier Excel status more efficiently, the fastest way to do it is through online classes.

These classes tend to be expensive, but fortunately you can sometimes find them bundled for promotions.

That’s what we’re seeing here today. Excel with Business has bundled together 4 of their most popular courses, and they’re making them available as part of a bootcamp package for $49.

This includes an up-to-date version of their first learning kit simply entitled “Microsoft Excel,” which quickly gained over 100,000 students upon its initial launch. Those students paid $345 just for that, but you get three additional courses as part of the bundle.

Here’s what you get:

A quick =SUM shows that you’d be paying $1,380 if you were buying each of these individually, but for the next few days you can get all of them for essentially 96% off.

If you’re interested in upping your Excel game, click the button below to see the full details of each of these learning kits as well as information about their instructors.

How to Use the Plugin Organizer to Speed Up Your WordPress Site

After WordPress hosting, plugins are the second biggest reason that can cause your WordPress site to be slow. Often times this can be mitigated by either disabling the plugin or stop it from loading in areas where you don’t need them. In this article, we will show you how to use the Plugin Organizer to speed up your WordPress site.

Using Plugin Optimizer to speed up WordPress

How WordPress Plugins Affect Your Website Speed?

One of the most frequently asked questions that we get is how many WordPress plugins are too many? The two things that concerns most users are WordPress security and how plugins may affect speed and performance?

All good WordPress plugins are coded in a way that they are only loaded on your website when needed. You can see our infographic on how WordPress actually loads plugins (behind the scenes).

WordPress doesn’t load inactive plugins which means they don’t affect your website’s performance. However, it does load all active plugins which then run their code when needed.

Now sometimes plugin authors cannot anticipate when and where you will use their plugin features on your website. In that case, they may load their code whether or not you need it. If the plugins are loading JavaScript and CSS files, then this may increase your website’s page load time.

How WordPress Plugin Organizer Can Speed Up Your Site

Depending on the plugins that you’re using, there may be some that you only need on specific pages, posts, or post types. Some plugins you may only need in the WordPress admin area, so they shouldn’t load on the front-end of the website.

WordPress Plugin Organizer allows you to do the following things:

  • Selectively enable or disable plugins based on URL
  • Enable or disable plugins for user roles
  • Enable or disable plugins based on post types
  • Rearrange the order in which plugins are loaded
  • Disable plugins and only load them when needed

Basically, it gives you the ability to fine-tune your website performance.

That being said, let’s take a look at how to use the Plugin Organizer to speed up WordPress.

Using WordPress Plugin Organizer to Manage Active WordPress Plugins

First, thing you need to do is install and activate the Plugin Organizer plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Important: Plugin organizer is a very powerful plugin. Reordering or disabling plugins can cause conflicts and unexpected behavior which could make your site inaccessible. We recommend that you create a complete WordPress backup before disabling or reordering any plugins.

Once you are ready, you need to head over to the Plugin Organizer » Settings page to configure your settings.

Plugin organizer settings

There are several options on this page, and we will look at each option, what it does, and which ones you should turn on.

Fuzzy URL Matching

This option allows you to enable/disable plugins on child URL. This means that settings will affect http://ift.tt/1f1AuyB and all subsequent URLs under it. For example, http://ift.tt/2EFZEv0 and http://ift.tt/2o6iIYO.

Ignore URL Protocol

This option is turned off by default. It allows the plugin organizer to ignore http and https part of plugin URLs. This is particularly helpful if you have SSL enabled on your WordPress site.

Ignore URL Arguments

This option allows you to ignore URL arguments. For example, http://ift.tt/2EGlSwO is a URL with arguments. Turning on this option is only helpful on URLs with arguments. You should leave it OFF in most cases.

Only allow network admins to change plugin load order?

If you are running a WordPress multisite network, then turning on this option will only allow Network Administrator to rearrange plugin order. We highly recommend that you turn this on if you have a WordPress multisite network.

Custom Post Type Support

This option allows you to select the post types where you want to enable/disable plugins. This option is particularly useful if you have plugins that you only need for specific post types.

Auto Trailing Slash

This option adds or removes the trailing slash at the end of plugin filter URLs based on your WordPress permalink settings.

Selective Plugin Loading

This option allows you to selectively load plugins even if they are disabled in plugin settings. You need to turn on this feature if you want to enable or disable plugins on individual content types.

To properly use this option, you need to add a must use plugin or mu-plugin in WordPress. MU plugins can be added to any WordPress site, and they are activated by default. The plugin will try to create an MU plugin itself, but if it fails then you will need to create it. We will show you how to do that later in this article.

Selective Mobile Plugin Loading

This option allows you to selectively enable or disable plugins on mobile browsers.

Selective Admin Plugin Loading

You can turn on this option if you want certain plugins to only load inside the WordPress admin area.

Disable Plugins By Role

This option allows you to disable plugin by user roles. You can turn on this option and then select user roles that you want to use in the next box.

Don’t forget to click on the save settings button to store your changes.

Creating an MU Plugin for Plugin Organizer

Plugin Organizer needs an MU plugin to work properly. The plugin will try to automatically add it to your website, but if it fails then you will have to create it yourself.

To find out whether the plugin has successfully created the MU plugin. You need to visit Plugins » Installed Plugins page. You will see a new link labeled Must-Use, clicking on it will show you the installed MU plugins on your site.

Must Use plugins installed in WordPress

If you don’t see the plugin or Must-Use plugins link, then this means that the plugin organizer failed to create the file, and you will need to manually do it yourself.

First, you need to connect to your website using an FTP client or File Manager app in cPanel.

Next, Go to the /wp-content/mu-plugins/ folder. If you don’t have a mu-plugins folder in your /wp-content/ folder, then you need to create one.

After that you need to go to /wp-content/plugins/plugin-organizer/lib/ folder and download the file called ‘PluginOrganizerMU.class.php’ to your computer.

Copy MU plugin file

Next, you need to go to the /wp-content/mu-plugins/ folder and upload the file from your computer.

Plugin Organizer mu-plugin file

The Plugin Organizer can now you use this file to properly manage your plugins efficiently. You can go ahead and continue with plugin settings.

Set up Global Plugin Options

Plugin Organizer allows you to activate plugins but keep them disabled. To set up which plugins remain active and which plugins are disabled, you need to go to the Plugin Organizer » Global Plugins page.

Set plugins to disable globally

You will see your installed plugin on the left. Active plugins will be highlighted and displayed on top. If you want to disable a plugin, then you can simply drag and drop it to the Disable column.

This will disable the plugins without deactivating them.

You can re-enable the plugin you disabled for individual post types, single post or page items, individual URLs, from different pages in the plugin settings. We will walk you through each of them later in this article.

Enable or Disable Plugins on Search Results Page

To disable or enable certain plugins on search results, you will need to visit the Plugin Organizer » Search Results page.

Disable plugins on search results page

On this screen, you need to simply select a plugin from the left column and drop it to the disable column. You will notice that the disable column has different boxes. You will need to click on the box where you want to disable the plugin. For example, adding a plugin to ‘Disabled Standard’ box will disable the plugin for all users on all pages.

If you previously set a plugin to be disabled globally, and you want it to be loaded on search results page, then you can simply drag and drop it from disabled plugins column back to available plugins.

Enable plugins on search results page

Selectively Enable / Disable Plugins for Custom Post Types

To control which plugins work on certain post types, you need to visit Plugin Organizer » Post Type Plugins page.

Enable or disable plugins for post types

First, you will select the post type where you want to apply the changes. After that, you can drag and drop plugins from available items column to the disable column.

You can also enable a plugin that you have disabled in Global Plugins page by dragging it from the Disabled column to the available items.

Group Plugins and Change Plugin Load Order

By default, WordPress loads your current active plugin files alphabetically. This alphabetical order may sometimes cause conflicts if you have plugins depending on each other’s code.

For example, if you have a plugin file apple.php which relies on functions in another plugin called zebra.php, then you may need the zebra.php file to load first so that apple.php works properly.

Plugin Organizer allows you to manually change the plugin order and group plugins. However, be very careful as this could make your website inaccessible.

To rearrange the plugin load order, you need to visit Plugin Organizer » Group and Order Plugins page.

The plugin organizer will display your plugins in default alphabetical order, and you can rearrange the order by simple drag and drop.

You can also group plugins together by selecting ‘Create new group’ from the drop down menu at the top. Next, you need to enter a name for the group and select the plugins you want to add in it.

Creating a plugin group

Once you are done with the group, click on the Submit button to continue. Plugin organizer will now create a plugin group for you.

Now if you go to the Plugins page, then you will see a new link named after your group name. When you click on it, you will see all the plugins inside that group.

Plugin group list on the plugins page

Creating Plugin Filters with Plugin Organizer

Plugin Organizer allows you to enable or disable plugin based on URL. To do that you need to create Plugin Filters. These filters will allow you to enable or disable plugins that match specific URLs.

First you need to go to the Plugin Organizer » Plugin Filters page and click on ‘Add Plugin Filter’ link.

Add plugin filter

This will bring you tothe add new plugin filter page. You will need to provide a name for your plugin filter and then add permalinks (URLs) that you want to be affected by this filter.

Creating a plugin filter

You can add multiple URLs by clicking the Add Permalink button.

Under the settings section, you can choose whether this filter will also affect child URLs of permalinks you have added. You can leave the priority field blank.

After that, scroll down to the ‘Plugins’ section. Here you can drag and drop plugins from the available items to Disabled boxes.

Disable plugins based on URL filters

Similarly, you can also drag and drop a plugin from the disabled column to available items to make a plugin load when this filter is matched.

Additionally, you can save this filter inside a filter group. Filter groups are like categories. Their purpose is to help you sort similar plugin filters together.

Organize your filters in groups

Once you are done, click on the publish button to make this plugin filter active. It will start working as soon as you click on the publish button.

Enable or Disable a Plugin on a Single Post or Page

Plugin Organizer also allows you to load or disable plugins on a single post, page, or custom post type item. First you need to make sure that you have enabled the post type support on Plugin Organizer » Settings page.

Post types enabled

Next, go ahead and edit the post, page, or custom post type you want to change. On the post edit screen, scroll down to the ‘Plugin Organizer’ section.

Plugin organizer section on post edit screen

You will see the plugin organizer settings with your plugins. You can drag and drop plugins to disable them or drag disabled plugins to available items to make them active.

Don’t forget to click on the save changes or update button to store your changes.

Troubleshooting Plugin Organizer Issues

Plugin Organizer plugin is used to change the default behavior of WordPress plugins on your website. Your settings may cause unexpected results including fatal errors, syntax errors, or white screen of death.

A quick way to resolve those issues is by deactivating all your WordPress plugins via FTP. This will deactivate plugin organizer as well.

To uninstall Plugin Organizer, simply delete the plugin from the plugins page. This will not only delete the plugin itself, but it will also delete all plugin settings. You can then reinstall the plugin if you want.

For most errors, see our comprehensive list of most common WordPress errors and how to fix them. If the error you are seeing is not listed, then try our step by step WordPress troubleshooting guide to find the cause of the error and possible solutions.

Gmail Go hits Play Store for low-end devices on Android 8.1 Oreo

Google has launched the lightweight Gmail Go app for Android 8.1 devices (via FoneArena). The app is the latest in a recent lineup of Google apps aimed at low-end smartphones, and should now be showing up in the Google Play Store for such devices.

Like Gboard Go, YouTube Go and Maps Go, the Gmail Go app is optimized for devices with low-RAM and storage space. The app package itself comes in at a slim 9.51 MB—compared to about 20 MB for the normal app—and should also take up less space once installed.

Editor’s Pick

The app includes features from the regular version like 15 GB of free cloud storage and the priority/promo inbox sorting, but other non-essential features/objects may be missing so that the app can use less ROM and RAM.

If you’re running a highly-end device you probably won’t see it in the Play Store but others should find it there from today. Alternatively, you can pick it up at APK Mirror here.

Google’s official Pixelbook sleeve is hella expensive

  • Sleeve for Google Pixelbook now available from the Google Store.
  • It costs $100.
  • Official sleeve includes a Pixelbook Pen slot and a premium layered microfibre finish.

The official Sleeve for Google Pixelbook is now available to order via Google’s online store – but there’s a small catch.

When Google announced the Pixelbook at last year’s “Made by Google” event you could almost hear the scoffs from some of the attendees. A premium, Chrome OS machine powered by 7th generation Intel processors, a ridiculously overblown 8 GB of RAM, and a $999 (currently $919) price-tag?

Editor’s Pick

While many still see the Pixelbook as an overpowered, overpriced piece of kit, the 2-in-1 does have a lot going for it, especially in the design department – you can read our full review here for more.

At a glance, the same could also be said of the official sleeve. It closely resembles the Pixelbook’s fuss-free, grayscale aesthetic and is crafted from “premium layered microfibre” to protect your expensive Chromebook.

There’s just one problem: It costs $100.

I guess there’s an argument to be had that if you’ve spent a thousand dollars on a premium device, another one hundred isn’t the end of the world. It’s worth noting that the official case is $20 more than the unofficial Bellroy sleeve that was previously advertised on Google’s online store, according to Android Police. In fact, the Bellroy case seems to have vanished from the store at time of writing… how strange.

For what it’s worth, the Pixelbook Sleeve comes with a slot for stowing away the Pixelbook Pen and has a small, subtle Google logo on the magnetic flap to match the logo placement on the Pixelbook itself.

If the $100 hasn’t put you off, you can pick up the Sleeve via the button below. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Razer has released the factory images for its Razer Phone

Razer has rolled out the factory images for its Razer Phone. The news was posted on a dedicated page on Razer’s developer site (via Android Police), where the company posted the November, December and January firmware releases.

There have been guides on how to unlock the Razer Phone bootloader since shortly after its release, so some users are likely to have flashed alternative firmware. Getting the device back to its factory state later, however, is tricky without the original system images at hand. Razer has now made this easier for device owners to get back to the default state, and delivered instructions on how to do so.

Editor’s Pick

The company does highlight that doing so will void your warranty (because it involves unlocking the bootloader) and, in an FAQ section, clearly indicates that no help will be provided should you encounter problems. Razer also advises against using its own cable when flashing the images, stating that this is intended for high power transfer rather than data transfer (use a USB 3 Type-A to Type-C instead).

With that in mind, it’s always good to see a manufacturer support this option for those who wish to try out other ROMs. If you want to get the device up and running with the stock firmware again, visit the Razer website here.

Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 1 renders leak, expected at MWC 2018

Leaked renders of the rumored Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 1 have emerged online. The images arrive from @evleaks ahead of the handsets’ expected unveiling at MWC 2018 in a couple of weeks.

We’d previously heard rumors about the Nokia 7 Plus and its Zeiss camera, and the new renders reaffirm a design we saw in leaked slides earlier this month (along with the cool white rear and copper highlights). Speculation suggests the handset will arrive with a 6-inch, 18:9 display, Snapdragon 660 chip, 4 GB RAM and dual-tone LED flash.

As you can see from the symbol on the device rear, this is also set to be an Android One handset, meaning it should launch with the stock version of Android Oreo.

The Nokia 1 has been off our radar since December, but this was also speculated to be an Android One device coming in March. This is, by all accounts, an entry-level device with a 16:9 display, single front and rear camera and plastic body.

HMD Global, the OEM currently producing these Nokia products, has pushed the brand up to the number 11 smartphone vendor spot little over a year after introducing its first Nokia handsets. Of course, Nokia was already a household name when HMD Global acquired rights to use it, but it’s nonetheless a strong start for the Finnish company.

HTC could release a new Desire phone

  • A leaker suggests that HTC will release a new entry in the Desire series, the HTC Desire 12.
  • If the leaks are accurate, the phone would be an entry-level, mostly-all-screen, 18:9 device.
  • The last phone in the Desire series was launched back in September 2016.

With Mobile World Congress 2018 right around the corner, leaks of new phones and possible specs are coming at a relentless pace. Evan Blass, who has a very accurate track record, has just suggested on Twitter that HTC could announce a new entry in the Desire series sometime soon.

According to Blass, HTC has a phone in the works, codenamed “Breeze.” If what Blass says is correct, the phone will be an attempt to introduce an entry-level smartphone with a mostly-all-screen 18:9 display.

Notably, HTC has used the “Breeze” codename before. Back in 2006, the HTC MTeoR ran under that codename. Is there some sort of connection, or is the company just running low on codenames?

Editor’s Pick

Since the phone would be entry-level, the specs most likely will be quite weak. Blass says that the phone would have a 5.5-inch, 18:9 display, running on a MediaTek chipset. Inside it would feature 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, and a 2,730 mAh battery.

In a separate tweet, Blass refers to this leaked device as the HTC Desire 12. It’s worth noting that the last entry in the Desire series was the HTC Desire 10 Pro, so why would it skip from 10 to 12? Blass is usually dependable when it comes to leaks, so maybe this really is what the HTC Desire 12 will look like.

We’ll be sure to update this article with any newly leaked information as it comes along. But, as usual, nothing is set in stone until HTC makes an official announcement.
