Sega’s upcoming Revolve8 real-time strategy game now up for pre-registration

Sega has just announced that pre-registration is now open for its upcoming Revolve8 game on the Play Store.

Revolve8 is a real-time strategy game that takes place in the fictional world of Imago. This is a world of folklore and fairy tales, so expect to see reimagined versions of Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sinbad, Snow White, and many others.

Wars are fought every 100 years in Imago, where the victors can rewrite their stories and become famous. You fight these battles with a deck of eight cards, which contain different classes and skills with various effects and weaknesses.

You only have three minutes to destroy your opponent’s tower. That may not seem like that much time, but the real-time nature of the game should allow players to get the job done.

Editor’s Pick

Even more exciting are some of the names attached to Revolve8. Senior producer Masayoshi Kikuchi previously worked on the Yakuza series, while character designer Koji Igarashi is known for his work on the Castlevania series. Lastly, sound producer Yasunori Mitsuda previously worked on Chrono Trigger and Xenogears.

Revolve8 will first launch January 17 in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Konh, and Macao. The game then makes its way to Japan on Jan. 22. Finally, the game will launch Feb. 5 in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, the U.K., France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Turkey, South Africa, and more.

From what we can gather, Revolve8 is a free-to-play game. We don’t know what the in-app purchases look like, but the seeming lack of an in-game energy meter is encouraging.

You can pre-register at the link below.

Google Fit wants you to start 2019 on a healthy note with a 30-day challenge

If there are New Year’s resolutions we can all get behind, they’re ones that relate to your health. Google hopes you actually stick to those resolutions with Google Fit and its #GetFitWithGoogle campaign.

The main component of the new campaign is the upcoming 30-day challenge. Starting January 1, the challenge nets you Heart Points from activities that you log or actively track with Google Fit. The app offers encouragement over the course of the month.

Google also teamed up with 36 influencers from nine countries to show how they get their Heart Points. You can use the hashtag #GetFitWithGoogle on Instagram and YouTube to see how others approach the 30-day challenge and offer your own tips.

Editor’s Pick

You can sign up for Google Fit’s 30-day challenge in the app. Once you see the card for the challenge, tap Learn more and then Sign me up to get a reminder for when the challenge begins.

Introduced alongside the Google Fit refresh over the summer, a Heart Point is Google’s metric to assess how much exercising you get done. For example, biking for 30 minutes net you 30 Heart Points. Any physical activity results in Heart Points, but more rigorous activities will net you more Heart Points.

The American Heart Association (AHA) and World Health Organization (WHO) recommend that you hit 150 Heart Points each week. As such, Google’s 30-day Google Fit challenge looks to accomplish two things: have people meet the suggested amount of weekly exercise and get more people to use Google Fit and its Heart Point system.

2019 will be a great year for smartwatches and fitness trackers — here’s why

Smartwatches and fitness trackers have never been as cut-and-dry as smartphones because they’re not for everyone. Not everyone needs to track how many steps they take, and most of us certainly don’t need our wrists buzzing day in and day out.

Looking back at the past year, a lot has gone on in the world of wearables.

2018 showed us fitness trackers becoming much more like smartwatches, and smartwatches getting much better at tracking fitness. Apple is still ahead in the smartwatch landscape, and Wear OS is still suffering from the lack of a Google-made Pixel Watch. Read on to find out where we think the wearables market is headed in 2019.

Fitness trackers are getting really good, even with their limitations

Fitness trackers have seen the biggest improvements in 2018, at least compared to full-fledged smartwatches. Whether we’re talking smartwatch features or new sensors, fitness wearables are becoming ever more capable, which means the need for smartwatches is diminishing. Let me explain.

I’m not saying fitness trackers like the Fitbit Charge 3 or Garmin Vivosport are better smartwatches than, well, traditional smartwatches, but they can get really close — provided you don’t need a ton of third-party apps or a big screen.

I might start recommending fitness trackers over smartwatches to some people.

If all you need in a wearable is access to smartphone notifications or alarms — aside from activity tracking, of course — any of the latest fitness trackers from 2018 will do just fine. I hate to keep going back to the Charge 3, but Fitbit did a really great job with its latest tracker. Not only can you reply to notifications from your wrist, you can also check the weather and buy things with Fitbit Pay. Fitbit even plans to bring a number of third-party apps to the Charge 3, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that we might see support for services like Uber down the line. We should see the first third-party apps come to the Charge 3 in 2019.

garmin vivosmart 4 review vs garmin vivosport

Garmin Vivosport (left) and Vivosmart 4 (right)

In 2018 some companies finally put the “we didn’t have room for those sensors” excuse to rest. Especially with the new Vivosmart 4, Garmin’s thin and light fitness tracker packs a surprising amount of sensors into a small form factor. We can even commend 2017’s Vivosport, which features a built-in GPS and still manages to remain smaller and thinner than the competition.

Of course, a big limitation traditional fitness bands are always going to run into is size. Part of the compromise when choosing a fitness tracker over a bigger device is you’ll have a more compact form factor. I’m not just talking about screen size — some people don’t need a big display on their wrist — but we could get to a point where Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung, Misfit and others will start making the “we didn’t have room for those sensors” excuse again.

The more and more companies cram into these devices, the less room there is for other things. If things like SpO2 sensors and connected GPS turn out to be fitness tracker staples, companies will have to make compromises. Perhaps one tracker will add the latest-and-greatest health sensors, but remove a feature that’s important to your lifestyle.

I don’t think this will happen in 2019, but it’s always a possibility.

Third-party apps really do matter

fitbit versa smartwatch

It’s a completely different experience using a Wear OS watch or Apple Watch compared to something made by Fitbit or Samsung.

For as many improvements as we’ve seen this year, many of the newer smartwatch companies are still playing catch-up to Apple and Google with third-party app support. Everyone wants to give the Apple Watch and Wear OS watches a run for their money, but Fitbit and Samsung arguably have the most work to do. Fitbit just came to the smartwatch scene in 2017 with the Ionic, but Samsung has used its proprietary Tizen OS for years. Sure, popular apps like Spotify are finally coming to more platforms, but the state of third-party apps could certainly be better.

Third-party apps can make or break a smartwatch platform. The Apple Watch and Wear OS watches offer up completely different experiences than watches from lesser-known companies. They make the overall experience feel much more polished and whole.

I hope the situation improves in the new year, but I can’t say for sure. App developers don’t seem as focused on developing for the Fitbits and Samsungs of the world and remain focused on the two major players.

Wear OS could use some help from Google

skagen falster 2 review design display oled

Wear OS watches are in a weird state right now. You might disagree with this, but I think it’s largely because Google has yet to make a Pixel Watch.

Back in 2016, Google showed confidence in its hardware team by retiring the age-old Nexus name and introducing the Pixel line — smartphones made by Google, designed for everyone (read: iPhone users). Using a Pixel phone continues to be different than using other phones. Users have the added comfort of using a phone made by the same company that makes Android. It’s nice to know these phones will continue to be supported for years, despite all their issues.

Google needs to do the same thing to Wear OS.

Not launching a first-party Wear OS watch makes me think Google isn’t as confident in Wear OS as Android. The last thing the company wants to do is release a watch plagued by the same issues as most other Wear OS devices, like poor battery life and sluggish performance. Until Google finds longterm, viable solutions for those issues, I really don’t think it will launch a watch.

Smartwatches are the only major product category missing from Google’s Pixel lineup.

For years, Google has said it will continue to focus on making Wear OS the best operating system it can for third-party watchmakers. That’s understandable considering Google’s long-held “software first” mentality, but things are different now. Google’s Pixel line features smartphones, tablets, laptops, and more. The only thing it’s missing is a smartwatch.

Maybe that will change in 2019.

Apple continues to pull ahead

Apple Watch Series 4

Frankly, Apple is in a league of its own with the Apple Watch, largely due to its business model. Apple has always been a product company, unlike Google which has traditionally been a services-first (not hardware) company. It got the hardware basics right from the start and continued to improve the recipe overtime.

The Apple Watch has always been a solid smartphone companion, as well as a good fitness and health tracker. This has allowed Apple to iterate over the years, slowly but surely launching slightly improved versions of its watches, similar to the launch cycles we see in the smartphone market.

Without Google making first-party hardware, the Apple Watch is going to continue to pull ahead.

With Google, there’s a disconnect. It can improve Wear OS all it wants, but watchmakers will always be behind in introducing hardware features to their watches. We’re still dealing with Wear OS watches launching without core features like heart rate sensors and NFC. It’s ridiculous. On the flip side, Apple’s gone so far as to introduce a built-in ECG into the Series 4 Apple Watch.

Wearables are a different beast than smartphones. The software and hardware are more intertwined, particularly in fitness devices. If a company — say Garmin or Fitbit — wants to introduce a pulse oximeter, it has to build support for that into the software. It’s not like Fossil (sorry for picking on you, Fossil) will take the initiative to introduce a new sensor like this to its Wear OS watches when there’s no support for the feature in the software. It just slows innovation down when the software and hardware aren’t made under the same roof.

In 2019 and for the foreseeable future, Apple will stay ahead and make even more feature-packed devices. As for Google? Read the previous section.

Now I want to hear from you — what are your wearable predictions for 2019? Sound off in the comments!

Reader’s Choice: Best apps and games of 2018 according to you

This is the featured image for reader's choice best apps and games 2018
We did some things differently in 2018. We usually just post our picks for the best new apps and best new games of 2018. However, we wanted the opinion of our readers as well. Over the course of December, we did polls for your favorite Android apps and Android games of 2018. Additionally, we used a link shortening service in 2018 that keeps track of the number of clicks any link receives. So here is a big list of apps and games that all of your really liked in 2018. Some of them are new and some of them aren’t, but that’s just how these things roll sometimes. Here are our Reader’s Choice best apps and games from 2018!

Reader’s Choice Android apps

This part of the list was determined solely on the poll we ran back in early December. You can find the full results here. There were 20 apps in contention and we chose the five with the most votes for this list. Honestly, your favorite here wasn’t even close and we had a ton of apps tie in the lower rankings. If the percentages look a little low, please keep in mind that there were 20 apps on this poll!

Hit the links to check out each app in the Google Play Store. Next year, we’ll probably narrow that down to ten in order to give you a more competitive poll!

Reader’s Choice Android games

This list was also determined solely by the best Android games poll we ran a couple of weeks ago. To be frank, we couldn’t imagine a world where PUBG Mobile and Fortnite didn’t wreck the competition and that definitely happened. However, we did not expect several games to get literally zero votes and that actually did happen. Hit the link to check out the full results.  There were 20 games on the list.

Hit the links to check out each game in the Google Play Store. Like the app section, putting 20 games on a poll was a little ambitious on our part and that resulted in a lot of low percentages. We’ll definitely work on fixing that next year.

PUBG Mobile Lite - best new android games

The apps you clicked on the most

We mentioned in the opening paragraph that we used a link shortening service in 2018. That service tracks human clicks when we make them. Don’t worry, we don’t know your IP address or anything like that, simply that you clicked on the link. The list below are the links that all of you clicked on the most in 2018 for better or for worse.

  • Winner: PUBG Mobile Lite (~35,000 clicks)
  • Runner-up: Hello Neighbor (~32,000 clicks)
  • Third place: Emubox (~30,000 clicks)
  • Asphalt 9: Legends (~23,500 clicks)
  • 1Weather (~22,000 clicks)
  • Google Wallpapers (~20,000 clicks)
  • Poco Launcher (~18,500 clicks)
  • BlackPlayer Music Player (~17,500 clicks)
  • RetroArch (Exactly 14,947 clicks)
  • Hyperion Launcher (Exactly 14,946 clicks)

This part of the list is pruned a little bit. Samsung+, for instance, had almost 20,000 clicks. However, people only clicked on that to try out Samsung’s One UI beta. Thus, some apps got tons of clicks for reasons other than people actually wanting the app and we removed those instances. Additionally, these are apps that appeared in app lists, news articles, reviews, how-tos, and other round-ups and content. Some of them aren’t necessarily new apps or games from 2018.

Of course, a lot of people didn’t get to vote this year. If we missed one of your favorites, tell us about them in the comments below!

Huawei and ZTE may face new US ban via White House executive order

ZTE logo from IFA 2018.

The attacks by the U.S. government on China-based Huawei and ZTE may about to enter a new phase. Bloomberg reports, via unnamed sources, that the White House is preparing an executive order that could result in U.S. companies being banned from using telecommunications equipment from Huawei and ZTE.

Specifically, the executive order would allegedly order the U.S. Commerce Department to bar U.S. companies from using parts and equipment from companies that the government believes could pose a national security risk. The order, which reportedly has not been finalized, would use the government’s International Emergency Economic Powers Act as its foundation, which allows the White House to regulate and control commerce in the event of a national emergency.

Neither Huawei nor ZTE have been named in drafts of this order, according to the story. However, it is expected that when it is released, the Commerce Department will use it as the excuse to ban the use of products by those two companies in the U.S. Bloomberg points out that a number of rural wireless carriers in the U.S. use parts from Huawei and ZTE, due to their lower prices.

The U.S. government has been claiming for years that Huawei and ZTE are linked to the Chinese government and that their smartphones and other products could be used to spy on citizens and companies in this country. Huawei and ZTE have both repeatedly denied these allegations.

In 2018, ZTE was banned from using U.S. parts in its products for seven years, including its smartphones, because the company had broken the terms of its deal not to violate the current U.S. Iranian trade embargo. It looked like ZTE was going to shut down. However, thanks to the intervention of President Donald Trump, the ZTE parts ban was lifted, allowing the company to stay in business.

Huawei was supposed to start selling its smartphones in the U.S. with an agreement from AT&T, but U.S. lawmakers convinced the carrier to back out of that deal at the last minute in January 2018. Earlier in December, Canadian law enforcement authorities arrested Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer, at the request of the U.S. She was accused of also violating the country’s trade embargo of Iran. She is currently out on bail and awaiting an extradition trial, where she may be brought to the U.S.

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL Lite tipped to land on Verizon this Spring

Rozetked

Are Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL too expensive for you? If so, you might want to hold out on buying a new phone until Spring 2019 — that’s when Google is rumored to launch the affordable Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 XL Lite. This rumor comes from our friends at Android Police, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans.

No exact release date was mentioned, but rumor has it both phones will land on Verizon. They’ll also likely be available unlocked via the Google Store, just like all of Google’s previous Pixel and Nexus phones.

The Google Pixel 3 Lite first leaked in mid-November on Russian website Rozetked, the same folks who got their hands on the Pixel 3 XL months ahead of its release. A few days later, the same website posted some alleged Pixel 3 Lite camera samples, followed by a ton of more hands-on photos from a different Russian website, Wylsa. Finally, we saw our first glimpse of the Pixel 3 XL Lite in CAD renders in early December.

Related

According to the recent leaks, the Pixel 3 Lite will come with a 5.5-inch LCD screen at Full HD+ resolution, a Snapdragon 670 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 2,915mAh battery, as well as a 12MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. The only rumor we’ve heard about the 3 XL Lite is its screen size, which will reportedly come in at 6 inches and have a Full HD+ resolution. Both phones are rumored to have a headphone jack as well.

They’ll likely be made entirely of plastic, as opposed to the Pixel 3’s all-glass build. Oh, and one other notable design choice: Both of these Lite phones will probably look a lot like the smaller Pixel 3. That means they won’t feature the Pixel 3 XL’s gigantic notch.

Google hasn’t launched a mid-range phone since 2015’s Nexus 5X. Why launch one now? We know that the U.S. is significantly lacking in decent mid-range smartphones, so Google might see a market here. Also, the fact that these phones are launching on Verizon means customers will be able to pay for them in monthly installments as opposed to spending hundreds of dollars outright.

That’s it for now, folks. We’ll be sure to update you if we hear anything else regarding the Pixel 3 Lite or Pixel 3 XL Lite.

Nokia 5.1 Plus is latest device to get hot slice of Android Pie

The Nokia 5.1 Plus, also known as the Nokia X5. HMD Global/Nokia

HMD Global brought Android Pie to the Nokia 8 last week, but the firm isn’t finished just yet. The Nokia brand licensee has just announced that the update is now heading to the Nokia 5.1 Plus too.

Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global’s chief product officer, confirmed the news on Twitter. Exact details weren’t disclosed, but we’re expecting a phased roll-out over the next few days. Don’t panic if you’re not seeing the update on your device just yet.

Screenshots of the change-log show that the Nokia 5.1 Plus update weighs in at over 1.2GB, and is said to include new system navigation functionality, Adaptive Battery, Adaptive Brightness, and “predictive application actions.” The latter sounds like a fancy name for Android Pie’s App Actions feature. Otherwise, you can also expect the December 2018 security patches to be included in this update.

We’re happy to see Adaptive Battery apparently included in the roll-out, especially after this feature didn’t make it into the Nokia 8’s Android Pie update. HMD is reportedly bringing the feature to the 2017 flagship in a later update.

We’re glad to see the Finnish company upgrading its cheaper phones, but Twitter users have voiced their displeasure at the lack of Pie for the Nokia 8 Sirocco. Sarvikas previously said the Sirocco’s update would be “next in line” after the Nokia 8, so we can certainly see why owners of the pseudo-flagship would be upset.

How to Automatically Schedule Content Updates in WordPress

Have you ever tried scheduling a content update in WordPress? If you did, then you likely discovered that there is no easy way to schedule changes to a published post or page. In this article, we will show you how to easily schedule content updates in WordPress and improve your editorial workflow.

Scheduling content updates in WordPress

Why Schedule Updates for Posts and Pages in WordPress?

By default, WordPress allows you to schedule posts to be published at a specific time. However, you cannot schedule content updates for a post or page that is already published.

Many bloggers and website owners frequently make changes to their old blog posts, so they can keep their article up to date by adding new information.

Business websites may want to make scheduled changes to appear at a certain time. For example, when you are running a sales event or limited time promotional offer.

Normally, you will have to make changes at the exact time you want them to appear. Your changes become live as soon you hit the update button. Some site owners save their changes as a draft and then copy / paste them at the right time.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you can schedule your content updates just like you would schedule new posts and pages?

Let’s take a look at how to easily schedule content updates in WordPress to improve your workflow and keep your old content fresh.

Scheduling Content Updates in WordPress

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the Tao Schedule Update plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit Posts » All Posts page in the WordPress admin area. From here you can locate the post where you want to schedule changes and then click on the ‘Scheduled Update’ link.

Schedule an update

The plugin will create a draft copy of your original post and open it in the post editor. You can now make changes to your post.

Once you are done editing, click on the date and time next to the ‘Publish’ option.

Click on date to set the schedule

This will show the date and time settings. You need to enter the date and time when you want your changes to go live and then click on the ‘Schedule’ button at the top right corner of the screen.

Set up schedule

Your changes will now be scheduled and will be published automatically at the date and time you entered.

Scheduling Content Updates in Classic Editor

If you are using the older classic editor, then you will see a new meta box in the right column labeled ‘Scheduled Update’

From here you can select the date and time and when you want to publish the changes. After that, you can schedule your changes by clicking the ‘Save’ button under the publish meta box.

Viewing and Managing Scheduled Post Updates

You can manage your scheduled post updates from the Posts » All Posts screen. All scheduled updates will be highlighted with their set release date.

Managing your scheduled post and page content updates

From here you can delete or modify a scheduled update without affecting your original post. You can also immediately publish an update by clicking on the ‘Publish now’ link.

We hope this article helped you learn how to properly schedule content updates in WordPress. You may also want to see our tips on growing your website on a shoestring budget.

Motorola P40 leaks with punch-hole camera, 48MP primary snapper

The Motorola P30 was one of the more blatant iPhone clones of 2018, but it looks like the successor is going in the same direction as Samsung and Huawei‘s new phones.

OnLeaks and 91mobiles have teamed up to publish what they say are renders and a video for a P30 successor dubbed the Motorola P40. And the most noticeable design decision is the move to adopt a display hole camera on the front. Unfortunately, further selfie camera details aren’t known.

Moving to the back of the device, we have a similar vertically stacked dual camera setup as the older phone. Apparently, we’re looking at a 48MP primary camera (much like the Honor View 20), but we don’t know anything else about the secondary snapper.

Another look at the Motorola P30 successor.
The front of the Motorola P30 successor.
The back of the Motorola P30 successor.

The 48MP camera sensor isn’t merely just for detailed daytime snaps, as this new sensor is also technically capable of pixel-binning to deliver better low-light shots. It’s unclear whether Motorola will indeed be using this particular feature, but it seems like a no-brainer.

Editor’s Pick

Other noteworthy features include a 6.2-inch display, rear fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C, a 3.5mm headphone port, and the Android One branding. The latter means we could be in for a smartphone that delivers timely Android updates and prompt security patches. We also have a rather shiny back, with 91mobiles suggesting it could be made out of glass.

The Motorola P30 was seemingly limited to China, while the Motorola One and One Power (which were essentially variants of the P30 design) were available in more countries. Hopefully, this new device sees a wide launch too if it is indeed in the works.

Samsung to show off sound-producing display tech at CES 2019?

The Samsung logo.

Samsung is tipped to show off a new smartphone screen technology, Sound on Display, at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. The tech would enable smartphone displays themselves to emit sound, eliminating the need for the earpiece speaker and increasing the device’s screen-to-body ratio.

The speculation arrives via etnews, which says Korean and Chinese manufacturers are set to show off similar audio emitting display products at the conference, citing industry sources. The Sound on Displays at CES may be seen on working smartphone and TV prototypes.

Sound on Display works by effectively transforming the smartphone body into a diaphragm, allowing the display itself to vibrate and produce sound when the ear is placed against it. This means the area of the phone typically occupied by the earpiece speaker could instead be taken up by the screen itself.

Presumably, this technology would be used only for the earpiece speaker, and the bottom-firing smartphone speaker would remain.

Editor’s Pick

Samsung wouldn’t be the first to use this type of screen technology in the Android market. It has been seen on several handsets in recent years, including the Sharp Aquos Crystal, which was among the first Android phones to appear without a top bezel (its front camera was instead placed on the bottom bezel). We’ve also seen Xiaomi’s Mi Mix offer a piezoelectric speaker in lieu of a traditional earpiece.

Speculation suggests the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 will include Sound on Display to support the already impressive screen-to-body ratio it’s expected to come with. The S10 is tipped to feature Samsung’s new Infinity-O screen technology, which uses a ‘hole-punch’ cutout to house the front-facing camera(s). Such displays should have more screen real estate than those with a traditional top bezel or a notch.

The move could be good news for those eager to get their hands on truly bezel-less displays, though there are still questions about the overall sound quality this type of audio provides. Similar attempts in the past haven’t been great in this regard; it was one of the most frequent complaints about the Sharp Aquos Crystal (and the Mi Mix, in our review), though Sound on Display should be the superior tech.

How many people are actually using Android TV devices right now?

The Nvidia Shield TV 2017 Android TV box.

Google’s Android TV was a much-needed entrant in the streaming box space, delivering a host of smart features and an intuitive UI in the process. Is the platform gaining traction though? Well, a Google executive reportedly gave the answer.

The smart TV platform is currently used by “tens of millions” of people, Shalini Govil-Pai, senior director of product management for Android TV, told Multichannel News (h/t: Android Police).

Govil-Pai says the platform is primarily used by consumers in Asia and Europe, adding that half of all users come via Google’s operator partners. In fact, the executive notes that the platform has been deployed by over 100 pay TV operators around the world.

The market seems to be heating up in the U.S. as well, as AT&T is already testing a Google-powered box. Meanwhile, TiVo is reportedly expected to launch an Android TV-powered box at CES next month.

It doesn’t hurt that there are quite a few Android TV devices, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box and the Nvidia Shield TV. The former is currently sold by the likes of Walmart in the U.S., starting at $60. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s Shield TV has been on the market since 2015, delivering the usual experience alongside a gaming focus.

Most Android TV OEMs have been slow to deliver Oreo though, let alone Android Pie. Oreo brought several new features, such as Google Assistant integration, and a channel-based homescreen layout. Meanwhile, Pie brings better performance on low-end devices, an easier setup process if you’ve got an Android phone, and autofill functionality.

Realme A1 tipped as Oppo sub-brand’s latest budget smartphone

Realme 2 Pro Color OS

  • The Realme A1 smartphone is reportedly in the works.
  • Realme is apparently positioning the new device below the Realme U1.
  • The new phone is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2019.

2018 has been an incredible year for sub-brands, as Honor stole the limelight from Huawei, Xiaomi’s Pocophone redefined the budget flagship, and Oppo’s Realme quickly gained market-share.

It looks like the latter brand is already hard at work on its first product of 2019, according to Droid Shout. This device is purportedly called the Realme A1, and is expected to launch in the first quarter of next year.

According to the outlet’s “trusted source,” the Realme A1 will be positioned below the Realme U1, which currently retails for 11,999 rupees (~$171). The brand’s cheapest phone is the Realme C1, which has a suggested price of 8,990 rupees (~$128), so we’d expect the new phone to slot in between the U1 and C1.

The publication confirmed that the Realme A1 will be available in black and yellow color schemes, but other details weren’t forthcoming. We don’t blame you for being skeptical about this latest device, but the outlet has previously published what it says are exclusive renders of the Moto G7 lineup. So they’re not a completely unknown website at this point.

In any event, the price bracket means we should expect a phone that’s more capable than the Realme C1 but not quite as impressive as the U1. This means we could potentially have a Helio P60 or P70 chipset (if not a Snapdragon 400 or 600 series SoC instead), a rear dual-camera pairing with a dedicated depth sensor, and (hopefully) a fingerprint scanner. Don’t expect the Realme U1’s 25MP selfie camera on the new phone, as that’s pretty much the U1’s sole selling point.

It’s unclear when exactly the Realme A1 will be revealed, but CES or MWC certainly seems like a good bet. What would you like to see from a new Realme smartphone? Give us your thoughts in the comments!
