Huawei’s Android 9 Pie-based EMUI 9.0 rolling out around the world

huawei mate 20 pro

Huawei recently announced that its EMUI 9.0 Android overlay is rolling out to supported devices around the world.

In the next few days, EMUI 9.0 will roll out to the following devices:

The EMUI 9.0 update weighs around 4GB, so make sure you’re on a decent Wi-Fi connection. Those on the EMUI 9.0 beta can expect a smaller 770MB update to the stable release.

Keep in mind that the list of supported devices may grow over time. Devices like the Honor 8X, Huawei Mate 20 Lite, Honor 8C, and similarly-new Huawei and Honor devices might also get EMUI 9.0 down the road.

Based on Android 9 Pie, EMUI 9.0 uses AI to increase the system response speed by 25.8 percent. Huawei also claims that EMUI 9.0 shortens app startup by 102ms and increases overall system fluency by 12.9 percent compared to EMUI 8.1.

Editor’s Pick

EMUI 9.0 also features GPU Turbo 2.0, the next iteration of Huawei’s game optimization software. Huawei claims that GPU Turbo 2.0 lowers touch delays by 36 percent and decreases hot spots temperature by up to 3.6 degrees Celsius compared to EMUI 8.1.

You’ll also find Huawei’s versions of certain Google features in EMUI 9.0. For example, Digital Balance and HiVision take clear inspiration from Digital Wellbeing and Google Lens, respectively.

Finally, EMUI 9.0 includes a gesture-based system and a more streamlined experience that cuts the number of menus down from 940 to 843.

If you have a Huawei or Honor device that runs EMUI 9.0, let us know your experiences in the comments below!

I got a Google Home Mini for $1 (Update: No more Minis)

Google Home Mini

Update, December 19, 2018 (06:14 PM ET): It looks like the jig is up as far as the $1 Google Home Minis go. If you visit the Spotify Premium for Family page, the site makes no more mention about obtaining a free Google Home Mini. We’ve also heard from readers that the deal no longer works.

If you missed your opportunity to get a free Google Home Mini, unfortunately, it seems you are out of luck. However, the $1 three-month trial of Spotify Premium (and the $1 two-month trial of Spotify Premium for Family) still works. Follow the instructions below to get that deal, but the steps involving the Google Home Mini no longer apply.

Original Article, December 3, 2018 (11:30 AM ET): A few weeks ago, we told you about an insane deal from Spotify: subscribers of the Spotify Premium for Family plan can get a Google Home Mini completely free-of-charge. That deal lasts until December 31, 2018 — head here to read our instructions on the process.

However, Spotify is running another deal right now which gets you a Spotify Premium for Family two-month trial for $1. This deal and the previously-mentioned deal can be stacked, which gets you a Google Home Mini and a Spotify Premium for Family two-month trial for only $1 — total.

What’s more, you can cancel the Spotify trial after the two months are up and still keep your Google Home Mini.

Follow along here and I’ll show you how to do it.

How to get a Google Home Mini for $1

Before we begin, there are two major limitations to this deal: the first is that you must be a new Spotify Premium subscriber. If you currently (or used to) pay for any variation of Spotify Premium, you will not be eligible for this deal. The other limitation is that this is for U.S. customers only.

With that out of the way, the first step is to sign up for the Spotify Premium three-month trial. To get started with that, click here. You will need to either log-in to your existing free Spotify account or create a new account from scratch.

To sign up for the trial, you will need to enter your credit card info. This credit card will immediately be charged $0.99 (plus applicable tax) and eventually be charged the normal fee for Spotify Premium when the trial is over (unless you cancel before then).

Once you’re all set with that, you’ll need to upgrade your new Spotify Premium account to the Spotify Premium for Family program. To do that, you’ll need to click here and then click the blue “Get Started” button.

Editor’s Pick

Now, this is where things get a bit scary. The page where you upgrade to Spotify Premium for Family will say that you’ll be charged $14.99 for upgrading. However, you will not be charged. You’ll need to enter your CC information again and all that, but Spotify will not charge you the $14.99. Instead, your three-month Premium trial will be knocked down to a two-month Premium for Family trial.

After you complete the Premium for Family upgrade, you will get two emails: a “Welcome to Spotify Premium for Family” message and an email telling you how to get your free Google Home Mini (deal no longer works, please read the update at top of the article). Obviously, that free Mini email is the one you want to open!

Follow the instructions in the email, but the basic gist is that you’ll be taken to the Google Store where you can pick your free Google Home Mini. Just do whatever Spotify and Google ask, and you’ll get your Mini for free:

Once this is all done and your Mini order is placed, you’ll want to mark your calendar for two months from today so you can cancel your trial. If you don’t want to cancel (which is what Spotify obviously wants) just let your subscription renew at the usual $14.99-per-month rate for Spotify Premium for Family.

Whatever you decide to do, the Google Home Mini is yours to keep.

Keep in mind that the trial offer and the Google Home Mini offer are only valid until December 31, 2018. Make sure you get on it ASAP before it’s over! Hey, a Google Home Mini for free isn’t something you want to skip.

Of course, this baby won’t arrive ’til after Christmas, so it’ll be skipping the stocking and going straight to your dash. It’ll be our little secret.

At a glance:

The premium dashcam will maximize your peace of mind on the road, saving you endless trouble in the event of a crash. Simply turn it on when you’re driving, and it’ll record footage of the road on a continuous loop. This bundle encompasses hundreds of lessons and goes for a retail price of $405. However, holiday price drops still have this baby listed at $39. Zoolz Cloud Storage: Lifetime of 1TB Instant Vault and 1TB of Cold Storage

Storage, storage, storage. For a while there, it seemed like you could get all you needed for free, but now the likes of Google Drive and Dropbox are having more and more people dropping cash monthly to more storage space. Hate monthly payments? Rather pay once and get a lifetime of storage without repeat payments? Yeah, you and everyone else.

Which is why Zoolz cloud storage has been garnering users by the boatload. They offer 2TB of storage for life for the one-time payment of $69.99. However, during the holidays, this price has been slashed to $44.95 so you can a digital closet for your friends and family. Since this is a digital product, you can of course still grab a subscription for your mom, but let’s be honest, wouldn’t you put it to better use?

At a glance:

Let’s face it, cloud storage can get pricey no matter how good the bargain. That’s why Zoolz offers a smarter way to purchase cloud backup based on solutions meant to suit your particular needs. With this lifetime of Cold Storage and Instant Vault, you’ll have an extremely affordable place to safely store massive amounts of data that rarely gets revisited, as well as a home for 1TB of data you need to access regularly. This is an extremely affordable solution for that entire mountain of files.

  • Store 1TB of Instant Vault data & 1TB of Cold Storage data for life, w/ no additional costs
  • Quickly & easily select the files you want to store w/ Smart Selection
  • Retrieve stored files in approximately 3-5 hours
  • Enjoy great features: bandwidth throttling, icon overlay, file retention & more
  • Preview thumbnails of images
  • Get reliability w/ data stored over multiple facilities & devices

Degoo Premium: Lifetime 2TB Backup Plan

That’s right! Storage again. We were hard-pressed to pick just one for this list, because both of these offers have been equally popular this holiday season.

Degoo is offering a lifetime of their premium 2TB service for a one-time price. So what’s the difference between this and Zoolz?

Well, the feature that causes some users to balk at Zoolz is that half of the storage they offer is what they call “cold storage,” meaning you have to request retrieval of those files, and they can take 3-5 hours to be available. Degoo gives you instant access to both terabytes forever.

The tradeoff? Well, Degoo’s price drop isn’t as dramatic, so you’ll wind up paying $59.99 for it. For users who actively deal with large amounts of data that they might need on the fly, the extra cost is a no-brainer. For hoarders who just want to keep around files and photos ‘just in case,’ Zoolz is a better bargain.

At a glance:

Everyday computer users are juggling huge amounts of data, so it makes sense that you’re taking care of that data responsibly. With Degoo you get 2TB of supremely secured cloud storage from which to manage and share files with awesome simplicity. With high-speed transfers from a database that offers more storage than Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive combined, you’ll love how easy it is to keep tabs on all of your valuable data.

  • Send files easily to friends via email or link
  • Store up to 2TB of data under ultra-secure 256-bit AES encryption
  • Replicate your backup as you perform it, giving you extra peace of mind
  • Perform backup to all of your devices
  • Get more storage space than Dropbox, OneDrive, & Google Drive combined
  • Keep your backup automatically up to date thanks to automatic file change detection

The Complete Robotics Bundle

Hellbent on welcoming our robot overlords? With automation rapidly sweeping jobs off the table, savvy futurists are hopping aboard the robotics field knowing that, no matter how advanced technology gets, we’re still going to need someone to maintain and optimize the robots quickly making everyone else obsolete.

The Complete Robotics Bundle has naturally been a hot seller among our readers, many of whom are already riding this brainwave. 5 learning kits give you everything you need to start tinkering and developing, and instead of paying the list price of $199.95 (honestly, still a good deal for the content) you only have to pay $19 for as long as this price cut lasts.

3-Port Charger with Wireless Charger & Power Bank

It’s a power block! No, it’s a power bank! No, it’s a wireless charger!

This inventive little gizmo from MobilePower is everything you need on the go or at home (but especially on the go). Plug it into the wall to power up to 3 devices (2x USB, x1 USB-C) while simultaneously topping off the 6,700mAh battery packed inside. Keep it packed while you’re on the go, and pull it out any time to use it as a power bank. The wireless charger built into one side means you can even just set your Qi-compatible phone on top of it for a while to get the juice you need.

This versatile little companion has a sticker price of $129.99, but a price drop targeting Christmas shoppers has it currently slashed to $34.99. These have been selling like hotcakes, but we expect that not all of them will wind up wrapped and given away.

At a glance:

These days, we carry around more devices than we can possibly keep charged — and who wants to carry around loads of chargers on top of that?! That’s why this all-in-one charger was created: so you can carry one compact gadget and keep all your devices at full power. It features two high-speed USB ports plus one USB-C port. On top of that, you can use it to wirelessly charge any Qi-compatible device — and carry even fewer things! When you’re out-and-about and without an AC outlet in sight, this baby even works as a portable charger so you’re never left powerless on-the-go.

  • Use the type C outlet to power your USB-C compatible laptop
  • Use the wireless charger w/ Qi-compatible Apple & Samsung phones
  • Plug into any 120/240 VAC outlet & even use in foreign countries
  • View how much power is left w/ built-in LED display

uTalk Language Education: Lifetime Subscription (Choose 6 languages)

I don’t know what it is about you guys that’s so keen on getting better as human beings. My idea of self-improvement is just ordering a combo meal from Taco Bell instead of the Party Pack.

Nevertheless, you guys seem determined to become smarter, more sophisticated members of society. Though I can’t understand you, I can at least point you toward the things you like to invest in.

uTalk is a service that’s putting the old guard Rosetta Stone to the test. Their service lets you learn a new language on any device you regularly use. There’s over 130 languages to choose from, and they normally only cost about $50 per language you want to learn.

However, for a limited time, they’re offering six languages of your choice for less than that. $29.99 hooks you up with everything you need to become a legit polyglot. There are other packages too, including the $300 130-language premium access suite, but we figure that’s a little ambitious even for the likes of you. For now, let’s stick to six.

Of course, if you’re only interested in learning one language, you can always grab it for $20, reduced from the usual $64.99. Click the button below to see all your options.

At a glance:

The world is flattening (figuratively) and it is becoming more and more valuable to learn a second, or third, fourth, or fifth language. uTalk helps you overcome the language barrier challenge by helping you learn real, practical vocabulary in a wide variety of languages from any device that you choose. uTalk’s language programs let you understand how native speakers actually talk and feature independently verified translations so you’ll be able to navigate through your next vacation like a real local.

  • Choose six of over 130 languages (see Important Details for full list) to learn from any device, any time you want
  • You don’t need to choose all six languages at once – you can pick some now and the rest later
  • There is no time limit on when you must choose your languages
  • Discover real, practical vocabulary that you can use in real-world situations
  • Measure your achievements as you go along
  • Verify your learning by playing speaking games
  • Learn from native voice artists who really know what they’re talking about
  • Access your account from any device so you can pick up where you left off anywhere

Amazon Web Services Certification Training Mega Bundle

Amazon Web Services power so many things we use regularly and often take for granted that it’s nearly unbelievable. Like people interested in robotics, those seeking to become AWS experts are aware of the changing economic and technological landscape, and they want to be on the winning side.

As such, we’ve seen a tremendous up-spike in interest surrounding AWS mastery. You want to get your hands dirty and we’re here to show you where the mud is. Start digging into AWS Certification with this Mega Bundle. You’ll get eight courses that individually retail for nearly $1,300, but if you buy them all at once instead of piecemeal, you only have to pay $69.

At a glance:

Retro Gaming Console with 600+ Classic Games

Those were the good old days. Or maybe you’re a young gun with an affinity for 90’s aesthetic. Or maybe you’re some kind of digital anthropologist.

Whatever your walk of life or quirky bent, having over 600 retro games on-tap makes a welcome addition to just about any living room or game room. Since we can now pack old-school cartridges into plankton, you won’t have to carry around a backpack or case to bring the fun to your friends. The NES-inspired micro design lets you take the fun anywhere.

The list price for this care-free companion is $299, but we’re guessing that pretty much nobody forked over that much cash for this. However, with a holiday price gouge on top of a more reasonable sticker price adjustment, you can grab the Retro Gaming Console for $44.99. This one is a “while supplies lasts” offering since these have apparently been going into thousands of stockings this year, so grab it before it’s gone.

At a glance:

Relive your gaming glory days with the Retro Entertainment Console! This extremely lightweight console comes preloaded with 600 games and two controllers so you can enjoy hours of fun on your home entertainment system.

  • Enjoy multiplayer action w/ two controllers included
  • Pack up & take it anywhere w/ ease

Wrap up

So far, these are the hottest sellers we’ve seen for this holiday season. It’s too late to nestle these under your tree, but if you’re in the mood to offset the seasonal stress with a little retail therapy, we won’t tell if you don’t!

Macaulay Culkin recreates iconic ‘Home Alone’ scenes with Google Assistant twist

YouTube

Christmas is only six days away, and you know what that means: it’s time to take your enormous family on an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris and accidentally leave your eight-year-old son behind so he can defend the family home from a pair of inept burglars!

Oh wait, that’s just the plot to “Home Alone,” the highest-grossing Christmas film of all time.

Editor’s Pick

To celebrate “Home Alone” — and promote some Google products — Google somehow coaxed the film’s star Macaulay Culkin to reprise his role as Kevin McCallister for a short film. The minute-long clip, called “Home Alone Again,” depicts a thirty-something Kevin living in his family’s Chicago suburb home. He wakes up and realizes he has the house to himself (of which his Google Home Hub reminds him) and sets about his iconic daily activities from the 1990 blockbuster.

The filmmakers clearly spent a lot of time recreating every minuscule detail of the McCallister home for the film. Other than the fact that Kevin is now far older with a much deeper voice — and the fact that there are Google products everywhere — you’d think you were watching the original “Home Alone.”

Check out the video below:

To tie in with the video above, Google is now offering “Home Alone”-themed ways for you to interact with your Google Assistant-powered hardware, such as your smartphone or your Google Home smart speaker. Just ask the following questions to your Google Assistant, and be surprised by the results:

  • “Hey Google, how much do I owe you?”
  • “Hey Google, did I forget something?”
  • “Hey Google, it’s me, Snakes. I got the stuff.”
  • “Hey Google, the Wet Bandits are here.”
  • “Hey Google, I’m the man of the house.”

After you’ve had fun with all those, check out the clip below which shows the making of the new short film. It seems that Culkin is having a pretty good time (and dropping some serious dad jokes).

NEXT: Google Assistant routines — what are they and how to set them up?

There’s something very fishy about this alleged OnePlus phone leak

Ishan Agarwal

OnePlus has already hinted at its smartphone plans for 2019, but now a new leak seems to show, at least on the surface, the design prototype for one of these handsets. Noted gadget leaker Ishan Agarwal posted the image on his Twitter account earlier today.

The image shows what looks like the back of this OnePlus phone prototype, which can be seen in a presentation slide, along with an actual real phone placed on a meeting table. The most notable feature of this phone is that it has some kind of circular housing for its rear camera sensors, which looks similar to recent Motorola smartphones.

Editor’s Pick

However, we are more than a little skeptical about this image leak than normal. As you can see, the photo seems to have been taken during a OnePlus executive meeting. Either the person that snapped the photo is getting in big trouble for exposing OnePlus’ next phone, or OnePlus leaked this photo on purpose (companies do this more than you think).

We do have confirmation from Lau that OnePlus is working on a 5G-based phone that will launch in Europe first, via carrier EE. We also know that the flagship phone for OnePlus in 2019 will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor inside. Which phone could it be? We have no idea.

What do you think?

Deal: Buy a Google Home Hub from B&H, get two free Google Home Minis

If you missed out on the Google Store’s recent deal on the Google Home Hub, you’re in luck — B&H Photo is currently offering the same exact deal. That means you can get the Google Home Hub and two Google Home Minis for $129, a savings of $118.

Similar to the Google Store deal, B&H’s deal has no fine print. Once you add the Home Hub to your cart, the two Home Minis are automatically added to your cart.

Keep in mind that you have to be cool with Charcoal if you want to get this deal. The Home Hub and Home Mini are available in other colors, but Charcoal is your only color option with this deal.

Editor’s Pick

The Home Mini is Google’s most affordable entry into its smart home ecosystem. It’s a small speaker that listens and responds to your voice commands with Google Assistant.

The Home Hub also features Google Assistant, along with a seven-inch display. As such, you can use either your voice or fingers to interact with the device.

You can grab the deal at the link below. B&H did not say when the deal expires, but it’ll likely be sooner than later.

Lighthouse turns off the lights on its AI security camera; offers refunds to customers

Lighthouse, a startup company that created an advanced security camera, and was financially backed by the co-founder of Android, is ironically turning off its own lights. In a message on its website, Lighthouse CEO Alex Teichman confirmed that the company was closing its doors after this news was first reported by The Information.

The company was first founded in 2015 and received about $20 million in funding. One of its backers was Playground Global, the venture fund incubator co-created by Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android. He later became the founder of Essential, which has had its own issues with selling its debut product, the Essential Phone.

The Lighthouse security camera was promoted as using its own proprietary 3D technology that, combined with AI coding, allowed it to more accurately see and map its surroundings. In our own hands-on demo of the camera, we noted some nice features such as the ability to set up notifications for specific alerts from the camera.

Unfortunately, it looks like Lighthouse’s camera had at least a couple of things going against it. One is that the security camera industry is highly competitive, with products like Ring, Nest, and others claiming a lot of the market share. The other problem was that the Lighthouse camera was very expensive at about $300, which means it cost much more than its competition.

In his farewell message, Teichman admitted that “we did not achieve the commercial success we were looking for.” The good news is that if you bought a Lighthouse camera, you will likely be able to get a refund. The company’s support page states that it will accept refund requests if you bought the camera directly from the Lighthouse site, or via Amazon or HSN. If that’s the case, you have until Jan. 25, 2019 to send in your request.

All of that can be yours for “just” $6,997

Tablets

Nubia launches its gaming smartphone – Red Magic – in India

Nubia Red Magic

Nubia, the sub-brand of China’s ZTE, has finally announced the launch of its maiden gaming smartphone, the Red Magic, in India.

The device packs a rather unique, angled rear, featuring a single 24MP f/1.7 main camera and tapered edges. And to amplify the gaming smartphone pitch, of course, there’s a customizable LED strip on the back. There’s also a hardware switch, dubbed GameBoost, which enables a performance mode.

The Red Magic is powered by last year’s Snapdragon 835 processor instead of the new Snapdragon 845. At the time of its unveil earlier this year, the company claimed that it was the best available chipset that could sustain performance without throttling, although I’m not sure of that.  It sports a 6-inch full HD+ screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio, and thankfully, there’s no notch.

Nubia Red Magic Specifications

  • Operating System: Android 8.1 Oreo
  • Display: 5.99-inch Full HD (1080 x 2160) | 403ppi | 18:9 aspect ratio
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (up to 2.45GHz)
  • GPU: Adreno 540
  • RAM: 8GB LPDDR4X
  • Storage: 128GB UFS2.1
  • Rear Camera: 24MP | 0.9μm pixel size | f/1.7 aperture
  • Front Camera: 8MP | 1.12μm pixel size | f/2.0 aperture
  • Battery: 3800mAh
  • Dimensions: 158.1mm x 74.9mm x 9.5(6.8) mm
  • Weight: 185g

Nubia has shared that Red Magic has been optimized for 128 games to provide improved performance and faster game loading speeds.

The Red Magic will be available in India exclusively on Amazon.in and is priced at ₹29,999 ($427). What do you think of the new gaming smartphone in India – after the recently launched ROG Phone by Asus – and would you like to pick one up? Tell us in the comments.

Brawl Stars review: Good now, but great in a few months

A year and a half after soft launching, Supercell’s latest action-packed title Brawl Stars has been released globally. With all of the in-game advertising in Supercell’s other hit games Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, Brawl Stars is destined to be a hit.

But is it worth your time? Keeping reading for the full Brawl Stars review.

A whole new world

Brawl Stars is Supercell’s first new game in more than two years, and it’s a significant departure from the two Clash games that the company is best known for. This title trades the goofy barbarians, giants, and skeletons for a colorful cast of characters, called Brawlers.

Brawl stars review el primo brawler

There are gun-wielding humans, a lucha libre wrestler, robots, ninjas, and even a cactus. In total there are currently 22 characters to unlock, each with a unique basic and special attack. Character designs are great, as are the animations and voice acting.

To unlock new Brawlers, you’ll need to either open Brawl Boxes and Big Boxes through gameplay or purchase them for real money in the store. Your chances to unlock a new Brawler increase the longer you go without finding one, but it will still take months (or years) to unlock all of them.

Brawl Stars is gorgeous

Regardless of the grind, Brawl Stars looks and sounds amazing. The cell-shaded top-down graphics feature a level of polish a step above any of Supercell’s previous games, which is really saying something at this point.

Looking to pad your collection of trophies? Check out these Brawl Stars tips and tricks

Genre mash-up royale

It’s difficult to pin Brawl Stars to a specific genre, but it’s a mix of MOBA and quick-action hero shooter, with a dash of battle royale for good measure (it’s 2018, after all). That’s a lot to take in, but if anyone can pull off an ambitious new style of mobile game, it’s Supercell, right?

The first game mode (or Event) you’ll find yourself in is Gem Grab, where two teams of three try to collect 10 gems and hold onto them without dying until the countdown expires. There are several other 3v3 Events, like the deathmatch-style Bounty and the base-defense-esque Heist. There’s even a soccer mode called Brawl Ball that was added to the game just prior to release.

Brawl stars review event game modes rotation

These Events rotate, with normal Events changing every 24 hours and special ticketed Events rotating once a week. If you’re like me and prefer certain Events over others, this can be a drag. Often there are two battle royale Events going on at once, which is a signal for me to set the game down for a day and wait for greener pastures.

I would have preferred less variety in return for a more balanced experience

Another issue is that not all Brawlers work in every Event. If your favorite Brawler is the healer Poco, the battle royale mode (Showdown) is off limits. You’ll have an equally bad time if you try to take a short range Brawler into any wide open map. Considering you have to spend Coins to upgrade Brawlers, being forced to switch things up adds to the grind rather than the variety.

Getting around the arena

In each match you move your character around using the left joystick (or by tapping on the screen, if that’s your thing), and shoot by dragging the right joystick in any direction and releasing. You have limited ammo, which replenishes at different speeds depending on which character you’re using. As you land shots, your super meter fills up, and can be executed by dragging yet another joystick and releasing.

Movement and shooting are pretty smooth for mobile, but don’t expect anywhere near the precision of console or PC action games. Movement feels loose, so making tight turns around corners or even coming to a complete stop in the right spot is tough. This isn’t news for anyone who has played similar mobile action games, but it can be frustrating for the uninitiated.

While gameplay is fun, it’s leaning much further toward the casual side of gaming than Clash Royale. Considering Supercell wants to bill this as another mobile esport title, it doesn’t quite seem to fit. Sure, there’s plenty of skill involved, much more than their other competitive title Clash Royale, but it feels and looks like a really well-polished casual game, which might make it a hard sell as an esport.

How deep are your pockets?

Supercell is known for monetizing its games pretty heavily, and Brawl Stars is no exception. The game features no less than six currencies and collectibles: Gems, Coins, Tokens, Star Tokens, Tickets, and Power Points. The premium currency is Gems, which are available through in-game purchases.

Brawl Stars isn’t outright hostile to f2p players, but it doesn’t cater to them, either

Tokens and Star Tokens are the only rewards that require gameplay and cannot be purchased for Gems. However, their only purpose is to unlock Brawl Boxes and Big Boxes, which can be purchased for Gems. This means that everything in the game can be purchased for real money.

Brawl stars review power points brawler upgrades

On top of this, you can also purchases skins for the Brawlers you’ve unlocked. This is how most competitive multiplayer games on PC monetize (Dota, League of Legends, Overwatch), but at the moment they feel like an afterthought. There’s a lot of potential for cool skins, but why would you buy them instead of directly increasing your Brawler’s strength in-game?

At some point, the game even featured advertisements to increase your rewards after each match. This was removed a few months before the global launch, but it shows the kind of shotgun approach to monetization Supercell has gone for with Brawl Stars.

Lack of fair play

Brawl Stars is certainly one of the most graphically polished games available on mobile devices, but there are a few issues with its ranking system that make the experience less than positive for new players.

Editor’s Pick

I’m not talking about your reliance on teammates in Brawl Stars’ 3v3 Events (but you should avoid playing with randoms, trust me). I’m talking about the system of ranking that Supercell has chosen to implement.

In matchmaking, only the number of trophies you have with your currently selected Brawler matter after collecting 100 total trophies. This means that players who are just starting out can be matched with veterans who just unlocked a new legendary Brawler. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the range for matchmaking appears to be plus or minus 200 trophies, starting at 0 trophies.

Brawl stars review matchmaking

In the game above I was matched against a player with the sharpshooting Piper unlocked and upgraded to Power Level 9. I spent the duration of the match getting one-shot from off screen. Hilarious? Kinda. Fun? Not at all.

On many other occasions I faced off against teams of players with trophy totals no less than 10 times that of myself and my teammates, playing other Brawlers I didn’t have access to and at much higher Power Levels than even my strongest Brawlers.

Most Supercell games hit their stride a few months after release, but at the moment many matches feel downright hopeless. If Supercell hopes to make this a competitive esport, this will need to be addressed in subsequent updates.

Brawl Stars review: A very good start

At the end of the day, Brawl Stars appears to have everything it needs to be a hit. However, more than a year and a half after soft launching, it’s still missing a few key ingredients.

First of all, it’s missing a clear identity. The variety of Events attempts to keep things interesting, but ultimately just dilutes the experience. None of the Events feel perfect, and all of them turn into a grind after a few dozen matches.

The other major issue is that matchmaking is broken. I know this is a common complaint for new players, but I ended up grinding to over 1,000 trophies before writing this Brawl Stars review and saw no improvements. Nevermind the absolute necessity of teaming up with friends in a competitive mobile title that you should be able to pick up and play in short bursts.

I’m sure Supercell will make Brawl Stars into a much more balanced and focused game than it is today in the coming months. Until then, I’ll be getting my mobile gaming fix elsewhere.

Hit any space with FenSens — The world’s first smart parking sensor

Reverse parking might be something of a skill, but parking sensors have made it a breeze. Even if they do take some of the sport out of parking, they’re a useful tool. Most older cars don’t have them though, and it’s not worth upgrading your vehicle for a parking aid.

Someone got paid to come up with Oath replacement name ‘Verizon Media Group’

Verizon logo

Today, Verizon CEO K. Guru Gowrappan posted a press release about the official end of its media brand Oath and the start of its new brand: Verizon Media Group.

Some would probably say “Verizon Media Group” is a little too on-the-nose for a brand name, but hey: no one wants to work late at marketing meetings, so they probably just settled on the first name that popped up and called it a night.

Verizon Media Group will now be the umbrella brand for the various Verizon media properties, such as Yahoo, HuffPost, AOL, TechCrunch, and the recently overhauled Tumblr.

Editor’s Pick

The Oath brand began in 2017 and was the combination of two media properties Verizon had recently purchased: AOL and Yahoo. Verizon’s main ambition with Oath was to create new media which appealed to younger consumers, with a major focus on video content. However, Oath struggled to make much headway with several of its ambitious ideas falling flat, such as the go90 app which aimed to take on video streaming services like YouTube and Netflix.

Earlier this year, Oath CEO Tim Armstrong made some comments which made it pretty clear that go90 and Oath, in general, weren’t going to last. Armstrong left his position to be replaced by Gowrappan who very quickly announced the removal of all pornographic content on Tumblr and laid off about 10 percent of the Oath workforce.

Now, starting January 8, 2019, Oath will officially be done and Verizon Media Group will take its place.

For general consumers, this reorganization won’t mean much — HuffPost and TechCrunch will still publish their content, Yahoo will still offer news, stocks, and email, and AOL will do…whatever it is AOL does now. Other than Tumblr’s controversial makeover, it will be business as usual at Verizon Media Group.

RuuviTag review: Sensors, BLE, JavaScript and lots of nerd

The RuuviTag is a microcontroller-based sensor node which can measure temperature, relative air humidity, air pressure and motion (via a built-in accelerometer), and transmit that data over Bluetooth Low Energy. It includes a 1,000mAh CR2477 battery, which means it can run for up to four years without the need to change the battery. It can operate indoors or outdoors due to its IP67 certified weatherproof enclosure, and its -40ºC to +85ºC operating parameters!

The tag is supplied with default firmware that works together with the Ruubi Station app so you can collect the environmental data from all nearby tags and display the data in real time. You can also set alerts, to warn you when a parameter goes outside of a specified range, or even send the data to a server.

Since the RuuviTag uses open source software, there’s more! As well as an alternative firmware build that allows you to turn the RuuviTag into a dedicated Eddystone beacon, there is also a build of Espruino, the embedded JavaScript interpreter. With it, you can write JavaScript directly on the device (using the Espruino Web IDE) and fully control how the tag reads the data, what it does with that data, how that data is processed, and how it is transmitted over BLE.

If you prefer C over JavaScript then you can also take the default firmware and build your own firmware. Everything you need is in Ruuvi’s GitHub repository. Plus new firmware builds can be sent to the tag over BLE, no need for USB or debugging cables!

For more information and a look at some of the potential use cases, check out the video above.

Honor 10 Lite hands-on: The budget selfie king?

Last month, we reviewed the Honor 10. The device was admirable for something that only costs 399 euros (~$453), bringing last year’s flagship Kirin 970 processor, plenty of RAM and storage, and a high resolution camera.

The phone brought quite a lot of value to the mid-range market, but Honor is looking to introduce an option for those on an even tighter budget.

We just got our hands on the Honor 10 Lite, and here are our first impressions.

Honor 10 lite rear

Related:

The Honor 10 Lite is definitely a flashy device. While it comes in standard black and silver colors that shimmer in Honor’s classic “Aurora” pattern, there’s also now a sky blue option which transitions from a light baby blue at the bottom to silver at the top. I think it looks quite good.

However, it’s proven to be a fingerprint magnet during the time I’ve had with it.

Honor 10 lite standing back

There is a fingerprint reader nested in the top third of the device with a 13MP and 2MP dual-camera setup sitting to the top left. These sensors have apertures of f/1.8 and f/2.4 respectively. The 13MP sensor is the primary camera while the second is primarily used for depth sensing.

The glass on the back feels fairly premium, but the aluminum sides feel a bit cheap. It’s also fairly light at 162 grams.

Honor 10 lite screen notch
Honor 10 lite chin

The Honor 10 Lite has a 6.21-inch 1080p LCD display with a small waterdrop-style notch design. This notch houses a 24MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture. It can recognize up to eight different selfie scenarios and react appropriately, adding things like color adjustments and skin smoothing. It also offers multiple different studio lighting modes.

The screen isn’t incredibly disappointing, but it does make it clear that this isn’t a flagship device. There is a noticeable difference in quality between this panel and the Honor 10. Even though the colors are quite deep and punchy, the display feels almost matte, and could definitely be sharper.

Honor 10 lite micro usb
Honor 10 lite headphone jack
Honor 10 lite bottom

The clear sign this is a budget device comes in the form of a MicroUSB port on the bottom of the phone. A single bottom-firing speaker and a headphone jack sit on either side of the port. The headphone jack seems to have become a budget feature, but I’m very glad to see it included nonetheless.

The other budget giveaway is the phone’s specs. The Honor 10 Lite is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 710 mobile chipset, 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This won’t come close to competing with Huawei’s flagship Kirin 980 or even last year’s Kirin 970, though the octa-core processor should perform decently for everyday tasks. However, we’ll have to wait to review the device in full before we can make a final verdict. There is a microSD card slot in the device, which can expand the total storage capacity up to 512GB.

Honor 10 lite screen

The Honor 10 Lite runs on EMUI 9.1, based on Android 9 Pie. EMUI has quite a controversial user interface — most people either love it or hate it. The phone comes with standard Android soft keys and no app drawer, but users can toggle on gesture navigation and even enable the app drawer if they want.

We won’t have official European pricing for the device until it officially launches in the U.K., but the phone costs 799 dirham in the United Arab Emirates, about 192 euros or $217. That’s about half the cost of the Honor 10, so this could be a great option for fans of the company with a bit tighter budget.

What are your thoughts on the Honor 10 Lite? Is it the budget device you’ve been waiting for?

Let us know!
