Someone got paid to come up with Oath replacement name ‘Verizon Media Group’

Today, Verizon CEO K. Guru Gowrappan posted a press release about the official end of its media brand Oath and the start of its new brand: Verizon Media Group.

Some would probably say “Verizon Media Group” is a little too on-the-nose for a brand name, but hey: no one wants to work late at marketing meetings, so they probably just settled on the first name that popped up and called it a night.

Verizon Media Group will now be the umbrella brand for the various Verizon media properties, such as Yahoo, HuffPost, AOL, TechCrunch, and the recently overhauled Tumblr.

The Oath brand began in 2017 and was the combination of two media properties Verizon had recently purchased: AOL and Yahoo. Verizon’s main ambition with Oath was to create new media which appealed to younger consumers, with a major focus on video content. However, Oath struggled to make much headway with several of its ambitious ideas falling flat, such as the go90 app which aimed to take on video streaming services like YouTube and Netflix.

Earlier this year, Oath CEO Tim Armstrong made some comments which made it pretty clear that go90 and Oath, in general, weren’t going to last. Armstrong left his position to be replaced by Gowrappan who very quickly announced the removal of all pornographic content on Tumblr and laid off about 10 percent of the Oath workforce.

Now, starting January 8, 2019, Oath will officially be done and Verizon Media Group will take its place.

For general consumers, this reorganization won’t mean much — HuffPost and TechCrunch will still publish their content, Yahoo will still offer news, stocks, and email, and AOL will do…whatever it is AOL does now. Other than Tumblr’s controversial makeover, it will be business as usual at Verizon Media Group.

Highest-end Galaxy S10 could have 5G support, 6 cameras, 6.7-inch display

The quad-camera Samsung Galaxy A9 2018.

  • A new report from The Wall Street Journal includes some new rumors surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S10.
  • According to the report, the top-end Galaxy S10 could have six cameras (two on the front, four on the back), 5G support, a huge display, and reverse wireless charging.
  • The WSJ says we can expect this beast of a phone in the spring of 2019, after the initial launch of the “regular” Galaxy S10 devices.

Yesterday, SamMobile posted some new rumors surrounding the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10. Now, we have a report from The Wall Street Journal which seems to corroborate some of the rumors from yesterday — and add in a few more for good measure.

According to the latest rumors, the Galaxy S10 will have four distinct models: an entry-level model with mid-range hardware and a cheaper price; a “vanilla” model which will be the direct successor to the Samsung Galaxy S9; a “Plus” model which will be the direct successor to the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus; and a top-end model which will have 5G support.

The first three models — codenamed Beyond 0, Beyond 1, and Beyond 2 — could be announced at CES 2019 in January and then released to stores in February. Then, in late February at MWC 2019, Samsung might launch the top-end model with 5G support.

Editor’s Pick

According to The Wall Street Journal, this top-end Galaxy S10 could also feature six cameras (two on the front and four on the back, possibly configured like the Samsung Galaxy A9, pictured above), a massive 6.7-inch display, and reverse wireless charging, similar to what we saw on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

The WSJ cites the source of this information as “people familiar with the matter,” which isn’t exactly the most ironclad of proof. As such, take all of this with a massive grain of salt.

However, considering multiple publications are reporting similar rumors at this point from (presumably) different sources, it does seem to suggest Samsung is going all-out with the Galaxy S10. This makes sense considering the company’s mobile division is in “crisis mode” and needs to bet big on the Galaxy S10. Even if only half of these rumors come true, it does suggest we’re going to see big changes — and big risks — from Samsung in 2019.

What do you think? Is this supposed Galaxy S10 strategy good news, or does it seem like Samsung is grasping at straws? Let us know your theories in the comments!

How does Apple’s new A12X processor compare to other 7nm mobile SoCs?

Apple recently announced two new iPad Pro models, one with an 11-inch display and the other with a 12.9-inch screen. The Cupertino company was keen to highlight the new features of the new iPad Pro models including the integration of Face ID, the switch to USB Type-C, and Gigabit-class LTE. However, the new iPads also caused a stir because of Apple’s claim that they are “faster than 92 percent of all portable PCs sold in the past 12 months, including Core i7 models sold by mainstream laptop manufacturers.” Apple is making such bold statements because of the new A12X processor used in the new iPads.

But before looking in a bit more detail at the A12X, it is worth noting that Apple said the new iPads are “faster than 92 percent of all portable PCs sold,” — not released, not available, not benchmarked, but sold. In other words, the average consumer doesn’t buy a high-end laptop, but rather mid-range or low-end laptop. Of all those laptops sold, by volume, the new iPads have higher performance than 92 percent of them.

Apple claims the new iPads are ‘faster than 92% of all portable PCs sold in the past 12 months.’

Having said that, the Apple A12X Bionic is certainly an impressive processor. It is manufactured using a 7nm process node, like the A12, but it now has an octa-core CPU and a seven-core GPU. On the CPU side, it uses four performance cores (codenamed Vortex) and four efficiency cores (codenamed Tempest). Apple is claiming a 35 percent faster single-core performance compared to the Apple A10 found in the previous generation of iPad Pro.

So how does the A12X compare to the A12 from the iPhone Xs, and to the Kirin 980 found in the Mate 20 range. Both the A12 and the Kirin 980 are built using seven-nanometer technology and both are available in devices today.

In this video, I look at the A12X, the A12, and the Kirin 980 and compare the relative speeds based on some popular benchmarks.

Game-changing iDrive offers unlimited mobile backup for life

mobile phone backup

iDrive has no monthly subscription, unlimited data backup, and even cross-platform compatibility (despite the i-name). These are just some of the reasons we get excited when it’s on offer, and remarkably right now it’s available for a one-off payment of just $19.99.

You might well ask why you would pay for mobile backup when there are free options out there. The answer is that iDrive is better

For a start, the free options only allow you limited storage. If you like taking photos and videos regularly then very quickly you’ll be out of online space. To expand on these free allowances you’re usually looking at a pricey monthly fee.

Backup your stuff from your Android device then restore it on iOS, or vice versa.

iDrive is available for a one-off payment and offers you all the space you need for up to five devices. With super-strong 256-bit AES encryption, you don’t need to worry about hackers getting at your valuable data.

Also, with iDrive you’re not married to one platform. You could back up your stuff from your Android device, then restore it on iOS. Game-changing.

idrive

It’s an effective and affordable solution for mobile backup, and the critics love it too. iDrive is an ‘Editor’s Choice’ of PC Mag, and Tom’s Guide named it among the ‘Best Cloud Backup Services 2018’

iDrive at a glance:

  • Back up iOS and Android mobile devices into one account (up to five devices)
  • Secure all your data with 256-bit AES encryption
  • Add an optional access password only known to you (extra security rarely offered on similar solutions)
  • Backup your iOS device and restore it to your Android, and vice versa
  • Securely back up your social media accounts like photos and videos from Instagram or Facebook
  • Access your backed up files from any mobile device, or through the web whenever you need them
  • Share your files with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and email
  • All new versions and updates of the app are included

We’re spotlighting iDrive today because right now it’s available for a promotional price of $19.99, but this is a temporary price drop. It usually retails for $49.99, so there’s quite a saving to be made.

The deal expires on Monday, so don’t wait until it’s too late to back up your stuff. Hit the button below to find the offer.

Spotlight: the ultimate free All-In-One Calculator

Do you remember back in high school when your geometry teacher stated that you would one day need to know how to calculate the area of a space?

Well, that day has come, and it’s likely that you’ve forgotten the formula. Fortunately for you, All-In-One Calculator from MINDBOX has your back, packing in pretty much every conversion tool you might need and more.

All-In-One Calculator is much more than what meets the eye. While most standard calculator apps found installed on Android phones by default allow you to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, All-In-One Calculator provides tools for algebra, geometry, unit conversions, finance, health, and more.

Clearly, not everyone is going to use all 75 calculators found in this app. So that you don’t need to repeatedly dig into all of All-In-One Calculator’s categories the next time you convert cups to ounces, the app lets you to favorite individual items. These favorites can then quickly be accessed through the side menu.

One of the more handy calculators is the built-in currency converter. By default, the app shows you the conversion for U.S. dollars to euros, but you can easily add almost any currency to the tool. Plus, MINDBOX even includes a timestamp that shows the last time the converter was updated that way you know that the All-In-One Calculator is using the most up-to-date exchange rates.

If all of the various calculators are a secondary use for you when opening up the app, there is a Calculator mode that can be enabled in the settings menu. With it turned on, the standard calculator will be the first thing to pop up whenever the app is opened.

One standout feature of All-In-One Calculator is the ability to place shortcuts to any of the built-in tools onto your phone’s homescreens. This option can be convenient if you’re repeatedly doing the same calculation. Plus, in a sense, this feature can turn each conversion tool into a standalone app.

If theming is essential for you, this app’s developer has you covered. While other apps might offer you the choice between a dark and light theme, All-In-One Calculator provides over 40 vibrant dark and light designs to choose from.

The app currently has a 4.7-star rating with over 31 thousand positive reviews

But what’s really impressive is that All-In-One Calculator was built by and is maintained by a single developer. So the fact that they were able to pack all of these tools into a beautifully-designed app that only takes up 22MB of space is fantastic.

And we aren’t the only ones who have been taken by this app. Looking at the Play Store listing for All-In-One Calculator, the app currently has a 4.7-star rating with over 31 thousand positive reviews. This overwhelming support from the community isn’t at all surprising as the app is extremely stable and provides fast and accurate conversions.

Download one of the best calculator apps available

Compared to most calculator apps out there, All-In-One Calculator is a one-stop shop that offers almost every conversion you might ever need. Click on the button below to give this free app a try. Unintrusive ads support All-In-One Calculator, but if you’re like us, you’ll happily toss the developer $4.99 to permanently remove these and make this app our default calculator on our smartphones.

Full specs and renders leak of the HTC U12 Plus

HTC u12 plus leaked renders Evan Blass

  • Notorious leaker Evan Blass tweeted new render images of the HTC U12 Plus as well as a full spec sheet.
  • If these leaks are true, we now know pretty much everything about the HTC U12 Plus other than price and availability date.
  • HTC will likely launch the HTC U12 Plus on May 23.

We’re six days away from the assumed launch of the HTC U12 Plus, but we may already have all the information one would need on the upcoming flagship. Today, Evan Blass leaked some new renders as well as a spec sheet that tells us every little detail of the device.

Evan Blass is probably the most notorious leaker of smartphone information, and his intel is usually dead on. However, it still must be said that the information in this article is simply a leak, and therefore any of these details could be wrong or could change before the official launch. Until HTC debuts the HTC U12 Plus on May 23, everything should be treated as suspect.

With that being said, here are the render images of the HTC U12 Plus provided by Blass on his Twitter account:

HTC u12 plus leaked renders Evan Blass

As you can see, the translucent color that HTC brought to the HTC U11 is likely to be an option on the U12 Plus, which is good news. Roland Quandt says that the U12 Plus will come in four color variants: Black, Red Rose, Violet, and Translucent. The images above appear to be the Translucent color as well as Violet and Black. However, the Violet could be Red Rose; it’s hard to be sure.

Editor’s Pick

You can clearly see the dual front-facing camera set up on the front of the device, as well as the dual camera set up on the rear. The renders make the devices look a lot less shiny than the leaked hands-on images we’ve seen, but that could just be the renders toning down that feature.

The bezels of the device sure do look slim, and it’s nice to see that there’s no notch with the HTC U12 Plus. I’m sure many people will be glad to have a dual front-facing camera set-up, rather than a notch.

The leaked specs sheets for the HTC U12 Plus are below:

HTC u12 Plus leaked specs Evan Blass

The most notable features of the leaked spec sheets are:

  • The device will likely ship with Android 8.0 Oreo, upgradable to Android P.
  • The sheet lists a new “pressure-sensitive” feature and a new “touch feedback” experience. What does this mean?
  • IP68 certification, resistant to water and dust.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845
  • 2880 x 1440 resolution in an 18:9, 6-inch display
  • 6GB of RAM and the choice of 64GB or 128GB of storage
  • microSD expansion slot
  • 12MP and 16MP rear cameras
  • 8MP and 8MP front cameras
  • Always-on listening support for virtual assistants
  • 3,500mAh battery

These leaked specs are actually pretty impressive. If this is all true, the HTC U12 Plus will be a great device.

Editor’s Pick

However, there’s still no word on price, and that’s where HTC could either succeed or blow it entirely. If HTC tries to price this flagship phone at the same level as a Samsung Galaxy S9, it will likely fall flat. But if HTC can undercut the competition by even $50 or $100, it could sway people away from Samsung.

We’ll have to wait until May 23 to find out the rest of the info on the HTC U12 Plus.

What do you think? Does this leaked info make you want to grab a U12 Plus? Let us know in the comments!
