Fortnite for Android beta arriving exclusively to Samsung, for now

  • Epic Games will make the long-awaited Fortnite for Android beta available first for a number of Samsung phones tablets starting today.
  • After a few days, more Android phone owners will be invited to the beta in waves.
  • The list of currently supported phones includes devices from OnePlus, Google’s Nexus and more.

It’s finally here. Epic Games is launching Fortnite for Android starting today. As previously rumored, Epic says the beta version of the highly popular battle royale shooter will first arrive on select Samsung smartphones and tablets starting today. Fortnite will then expand to more Android phones “in the next few days”.

Epic has confirmed to us, via a press release, that the list of Samsung phones and tablets that will be able to access the Fortnite for Android beta will include:

Owners of those phones and tablets will be able to download Fortnite for Android beta directly via the Samsung Game Launcher app. In addition, owners of the new Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy Tab S4 will be able to download and use a special Fortnite character skin in the game, shown above.

People who pre-order the Note 9 from now until August 23 can either get 15,000 V-bucks (the in-game currency for Fortnite) and the special skin, or a pair of AKG noise-canceling headphones for free. They will also have the option to get the V-bucks, the skin and the headphones for the price of $99.

After “a few days” (no specifics, unfortunately) Epic will expand access to the Fortnite for Android beta to more phones. Epic’s list includes some phones that were not listed in an initial leak of those devices a few days ago. Here’s what Epic has confirmed to us will be on this list:

As you can see, fans of OnePlus’s most recent phones should be happy to see them support the Fortnite for Android beta, along with the Essential Phone, the new LG G7 ThinQ, and owners of the first generation Pixel phones from Google. This list also includes a large number of devices from Chinese phone makers like Huawei, Xiaomi, and ZTE, which would seem to indicate that Epic Games really wants Fortnite for Android to do well in that part of the world. Finally, gaming-themed phones like the Razer Phone, the Xiaomi Blackshark, and the upcoming Asus ROG Phone will support Fortnite.

Not on this list are any phones from Motorola, Sony or HTC, and there’s only one Nokia device on this list as well, It’s possible more phones will be added to the Fortnite for Android support list in the coming weeks and months.

As we have reported before, Epic will not be releasing Fortnite for Android via the Google Play Store. In our interview with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, he stated that the developer views Android as an open platform, like Windows, and releasing Fortnite outside of the Google Play Store will allow Epic to keep the 30 percent of revenues that would normally go to Google.

You can sign up for the Fortnite Android beta at the link below. People with supported phones will be invited to join in waves and will be sent instructions on how to download and install the beta release. Keep in mind that Epic has labeled Fortnite for Android as a “beta” so there might be more than a few bugs and glitches compared to the final release.

The Galaxy Note 9 is here: Everything you need to know

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has landed and we have all the official details here. Read on for a full rundown of the Galaxy Note 9 specs, features, price, and release date.

The Galaxy Note series has always been controversial. From the days of “who would ever want a 5.3-inch screen?,” to the commercials that made Apple doubt itself, to the Note 7’s fiery fiasco, the series has constantly made the news. Despite the controversy — or maybe because of it — the Note family is Samsung’s proudest achievement, an embodiment of its leadership in technology and design.

Announced today in New York City, the Galaxy Note 9 is an exquisitae, yet utterly uncontroversial phone. For better or worse, Samsung is playing it safe (unless you have strong feelings about color schemes). Here’s everything you need to know about the Galaxy Note 9.

Note 8 redux

In line with Samsung’s other major phones from the last couple of years, the Galaxy Note 9 brings very little in terms of design changes. The Note 9 looks almost exactly like the Galaxy Note 8 before it. The front of the device is largely identical to the Note 8’s, with slightly smaller bezels to accommodate the 6.4-inch screen, which is the largest ever on a Note.

The fingerprint sensor on the back (now placed below the camera) serves as a quick way to identify the Note 9. Despite some rumors about Samsung using an in-display fingerprint for the Note 9 (similar to the Vivo X21 UD), it looks like the tech isn’t quite ready for Samsung.

Samsung spruced things up a bit with the color selection.

Samsung did spruce things up a bit with the color selection. Lavender Purple and a luscious Metallic Copper join the more conventional black and blue options. The yellow S Pen shipping with the blue model is a very nice touch. As usual, Samsung is holding back some versions in the U.S., where only the blue and the purple models will be available at launch.

Suffice to say that the Galaxy Note 9 is a specs beast that will satisfy even the most demanding users. So. Much. Storage.

The smartphone specs race has slowed to a crawl (at least until foldable phones arrive), so we shouldn’t be surprised that Samsung is hawking storage space as a major feature of the Galaxy Note 9. Not that we’re complaining — even with unlimited data and generous cloud storage plans, there’s no such thing as too much local storage.

The base version of the Galaxy Note 9 features 128GB, which is already excellent. But storage-obsessed users can go up to 512GB of onboard storage. Couple it with a 512GB microSD card and you can walk around with 1TB of storage in your pocket — provided you’re willing to pay close to $1,500 for the phone-card combo. Samsung said compatible cards are coming this fall, but didn’t explain why users can’t just buy one of the 512GB microSD cards already on the market.

You can walk around with 1TB of storage in your pocket, if you can afford it.

“All-day battery” and Wireless Charger Duo

Having a large screen means plenty of space for a large battery. The Note family has always been known for long battery life, though in recent years, competitors like the Huawei Mate series have pulled ahead. Samsung is now playing catch up, fitting the Galaxy Note 9 with a 4,000mAh battery, the same as the Mate 10 Pro.

That’s a 15-percent improvement over the Galaxy S9 Plus and a generous 20 percent over the Galaxy Note 8. It’s also good enough to keep up with a full day of work and play for all but the most intensive users.

Samsung is also debuting a new wireless charger called Duo that is capable of fast charging two smartphones at the same time, or one smartphone and a smartwatch. Samsung has released dual chargers in the past, but this 25W model will fill up the Note’s battery much quicker.

Before you ask, yes, Samsung did mention the measures it took to avoid another battery disaster, including an eight-point testing suite and oversight from UL.

The S Pen is getting smarter with Bluetooth

The S Pen has stayed basically unchanged for years, but with the Note 9, the stylus is actually getting a serious upgrade. The S Pen now features Bluetooth LE (and a built-in battery), so you can use it as a remote control for your phone. You’ll be able to tap on S Pen’s button to activate the camera shutter, control music playback, and even to unlock the phone and launch your favorite app, hands-free.

The S Pen charges by drawing power from the Note 9 while docked. Docking it for less than a minute will give it enough power for 30 minutes of use or 200 clicks. The S Pen will continue to work for writing and drawing even when the battery runs out.

Samsung will also release an SDK, allowing third-party developers to bring S Pen remote control to their apps starting this fall.

With the Note 9, the stylus is actually getting a serious upgrade.

Same camera, new intelligence

Samsung brags that the Galaxy Note 9 has the best camera of any smartphone. While we’re waiting for the first camera tests, we’ll note that Samsung is using generally the same hardware as on the Galaxy S9 Plus: dual 12MP cameras with dual aperture and optical image stabilization on both cameras.

There are some software updates, however: taking a page from competitors like Huawei and Asus, Samsung now offers AI-based scene detection, to automatically pick the best settings for each scene. Another cool addition is the defect detection feature that will alert you if your shot is blurry or you caught someone with their eyes closed.

Fortnite for Android exclusive

Fortnite needs no introduction at this point. The game has more than a hundred million players hooked, and it’s available on every major platform, except Android. That’s changing starting today: Samsung and Epic struck a deal to make Fortnite for Android exclusively available on recent Galaxy flagships. It’s not clear yet how long this window of exclusivity will last (Samsung said “a few days”), but it’s a major coup for Samsung, even if the demographics of the Fortnite and the Note series don’t match up that well.

The Galaxy Note 9 certainly has the oomph required to play Fortnite for Android, even if the phone lacks some of the bells and whistles found on dedicated gaming smartphones.

Besides the Note 9, Fortnite will be available starting today on Samsung flagship phones starting with the Galaxy S7, as well as the Galaxy Tab S3 and the new Tab S4. Note 9 and Tab S4 users will also get a Galaxy skin to rock in the game.

How to Create an Etsy-Like Store with WordPress (Step by Step)

Do you want to build an Etsy-like store with WordPress? Etsy is an online marketplace for creative folks who want to sell hand-made goods, artwork, and other unique items. However, it is a bit limited in terms of what you can do with your Etsy store. In this article, we will show you how to create an Etsy-like store with WordPress, and how to properly move an existing Etsy store to WordPress.

How to Create an Etsy-Like Store with WordPress

Here is what you will learn in this article.

  • Etsy vs WordPress – Comparison of both platforms with pros and cons
  • What you need to create a Etsy-like WordPress website
  • Getting started with your own Etsy-like WordPress store
  • Installing WooCommerce
  • Moving an existing Etsy store to WordPress
  • Choosing an Etsy-like theme
  • Extending your store with extensions
  • Mastering WordPress

Etsy vs WordPress – Which one is better?

Etsy is an online marketplace for creative folks. It allows you to sell unique, handmade, or custom-made products to a targeted audience.

On the other hand, WordPress is the world’s most popular website builder. It allows you to create almost any kind of website imaginable, including full-fledged eCommerce stores.

There are two different types of WordPress platform. WordPress.com which is a hosted platform and WordPress.org which also called self-hosted WordPress. See the difference in our WordPress.com vs WordPress.org comparison.

Throughout this article, when we say WordPress, we are talking about the more popular, self-hosted WordPress.org platform. We recommend using WordPress.org because it gives you access to all WordPress features out of the box.

Etsy and WordPress both enable you to sell products online but which one you should choose? Here are some pros and cons of both platforms.

Pros and Cons of Setting up an Etsy Shop

Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of using Etsy to sell your products online.

Pros of Using Etsy

  • Ease of Use – Setting up an Etsy store is very easy and does not require any technical skills. Simply upload your product listings, add your payment information, and you are good to go.
  • Targetted Audience – Etsy has a large customer base of users interested in unique hand-made products, gift items, artistic and creative products, and more. Opening up a shop on Etsy gives you access to a marketplace with interested buyers.
  • Security and Trust – Etsy takes care of payments and ensures product delivery. This has helped them build trust among both buyers and sellers.

Cons of Using Etsy

  • Higher Fees – Etsy charges $0.20 per listing and 5% transaction fee on the sale price (not including shipping costs). They have increased transaction fee from 3.5% to 5% starting July 16th, 2018. If you are using PayPal, then there is also a payment processing fees.
  • Lack of Control – You have no control on the platform, and how your products are featured. Etsy can remove a seller if they feel that seller’s products don’t meet their policies or seller fails to satisfy a customer.
  • Limited Growth Options – As your business grows, you will be paying a lot more to Etsy with limited options to grow your own brand and business.

Pros and Cons of Using WordPress

WordPress is the best platform to build any kind of website. However, it has its own pros and cons that you would want to consider.

Pros of Using WordPress

  • Complete Control – You have complete ownership and full control of your website.
  • Unlimited Features – You can add any feature to your website by installing extensions. There are more than 55,000 free WordPress plugins that you can install.
  • Unlimited Listings – You can add as many items to your shop as you want. There is no listing fees because you own and manage the platform yourself.
  • Low Costs – There is no comission and no transaction fee on each sale. You will only pay a small fee to your payment gateway.

Cons of Using WordPress

  • Website Management – You are responsible for managing updates and making backups. There are plugins that help you automate those tasks.
  • Learning Curve – WordPress is fairly easy to use. However, from time to time you may need some help. There are plenty of WordPress resources to help you out.

To learn more about WordPress, see our complete WordPress review with detailed pros and cons of the platform.

That being said let’s take a look at how to create an Etsy-like store with WordPress.

Requirements for Creating an Etsy-like Store with WordPress?

Here are the things you will need to build your own Etsy-like store with WordPress.

  1. A domain name (This will be your shop’s address on the internet i.e wpbeginner.com)
  2. A website hosting account (This will be shop’s home and where all your files will be stored)
  3. SSL Certificate (You need this to accept payments)
  4. Your undivided attention for 30 minutes.

Ready? let’s get started.

Getting Started with Your Etsy-Like Shop in WordPress

Normally, a domain name will cost you $14.99 / year, website hosting $7.99 per month, and an SSL certificate around $69.99 per year.

This is a lot of money if you are just getting started.

Thankfully, the folks at Bluehost has agreed to offer WPBeginner users a free domain name + free SSL certificate, and a 60% discount on hosting. They are also an officially recommended WordPress and WooCommerce hosting provider, and one of the largest hosting companies in the world.

Basically, you can get started for $2.75 / month.

After that, you will receive an email with instructions to login to your hosting control panel.

Bluehost will automatically install WordPress for you, and you will be able to login to your WordPress site directly from the hosting dashboard.
