Google will spend $1 billion on new NYC campus ‘Google Hudson Square’

  • The new Google NYC campus will be called “Google Hudson Square.”
  • Google Hudson Square will cost at least $1 billion.
  • The campus expansion will be finalized by 2022 and will allow Google to double its current staff numbers in the city.

Today, Google revealed its official plans for the expansion of its New York City campus, via Politico. The new Google NYC headquarters will be dubbed “Google Hudson Square,” aptly named due to the location of the buildings in the lower Manhattan district by the same name.

Google plans to invest over $1 billion in the creation of the campus.

There will be three buildings in all that make up the campus: two pre-existing buildings on Hudson Street and a yet-to-be-built building on nearby Washington Street. Google expects to begin moving into the Hudson Street buildings by 2020 and for the new building to be complete by 2022.

Google and Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat said in a blog post that the company will also “continue to deepen our commitments in STEM education, workforce development and access to technology,” which will include creating a program to train workers in digital skills. “We believe that as our company grows, we have a responsibility to support the communities we call home,” she said.

The Google NYC expansion comes as other tech giants from the west coast start moving eastward. Amazon’s move to both New York City and Virginia, in particular, is causing some controversy due to the heavy tax breaks the company is receiving. Several New York City protests have already happened related to the move.

However, Google has had a presence in New York for years already with little fanfare. It’s likely this expansion won’t receive the same amount of antagonism.

If you hoped for stock Android on Samsung’s Android Go smartphone, think again

  • Leaked images allegedly showed off Samsung’s rumored Android Go smartphone.
  • Based on the images, the phone will not run stock Android and, instead, feature Samsung’s software skin.

With speculation continuing to grow that Samsung will soon release its first Android Go smartphone, SamMobile obtained alleged images of the phone a little over a week after the phone’s specifications leaked.

Based on the leaked image, Samsung’s Android Go smartphone features the company’s software skin on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. Being an Android Go smartphone does not guarantee stock Android, though Samsung’s software is notorious for bogging its phones down over time.

Elsewhere, the phone features on-screen navigation keys and a few Go-optimized apps. Facebook Lite also shows up, though we do not know if that is pre-installed.

Samsung’s Android Go phone also runs the December 2017 security patch level. We can only hope the device launches with the latest security patch, though Samsung phones are known for their sporadic updates.

Editor’s Pick

Final tidbits include the SM-J260 model number that matches a previous leak, a single rear camera, and no fingerprint sensor.

There is no indication when Samsung plans to launch the phone. That said, it reportedly features a 5-inch Super AMOLED display, 8MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, quad-core Exynos 7570 chipset, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and 2,600mAh battery.

With specifications like that, along with Samsung’s software, performance will be a big question mark. Still, previous reports peg a launch in at least two regions. We have to wait to see if Samsung’s Android Go phone also launches in the U.S.

Verizon itself often runs some great promotions, as do other major retailers like Best Buy.

Editor’s note: We will be updating this list regularly as new deals are announced.

Verizon deals on Google Pixel 2 or 2 XL with Verizon trade-in, plus entertainment goodies

verizon deal entertainment bundle

The latest of the Verizon deals gives customers 50 percent off the Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL if you trade in an eligible phone and those devices must be “in good working and cosmetic condition” to be accepted. The discounts will be put in place via bill credits for 24 months.

If you purchase the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL from Verzion, with or without the trade-in discount, you will also get some freebies. A  Google Home Mini, a Google Chromecast and two free months of YouTube TV. That’s about $165 in free hardware and software services. Verizon will ship the Google Home Mini speaker and the Chromecast TV dongle to Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL customers within a month of activation of the phones. You have to be a new user of YouTubeTV to get the free two month offer, and you will need to sign up via a link from Verizon before the end of June.

Verizon BOGO dea;s on Samsung Galaxy S9, Google Pixel 2 XL and Moto Z2 Force Edition

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is available at Verizon. The carrier is currently offering customers a way to get a second Android phone for “free” with the purchase of the new Galaxy S9, along with the older Moto Z2 Force Edition and the Google Pixel 2 XL. The second phone must cost the same or less than the phones in this deal. The free second phone is paid off via monthly billing credits over 24 months.

Best Buy – Get $336 off the Moto Z2 Play

You can get a substantial discount on the Moto Z2 Play if you get it from Best Buy. The retailer is selling the device for only $71.76. A new line or account is required to get the $336 discount, and you also have to buy the handset on a two-year-long installment plan at $10 per month.

This is a fantastic deal for those in the market for a mid-range device. The Moto Z2 Play sports a 5.5-inch Full HD display, is powered by the Snapdragon 626 chipset, and has 3 GB of RAM. It also supports Moto Mods, which add new features to the smartphone or improve existing ones. You can learn more about it by checking out our review of the Moto Z2 Play.

Huawei plans first 5G phone for Q3 2019, might be Mate 30

  • At its global analyst summit in Shenzhen, an announcement was made regarding the first Huawei 5G smartphone landing in Q3 2019.
  • The first Huawei 5G smartphone will land right after the first 5G-capable Wi-Fi hotspot. Both will run on Huawei-designed modems.
  • If the upcoming entry in the Mate line is the Mate 20, it’s possible the first Huawei 5G smartphone could be the Mate 30.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei is in the middle of its global analyst summit in Shenzhen, in which it gives details on its plans for the next year. During a presentation, a Huawei rep confirmed that the first 5G smartphone from Huawei would land in the second half of 2019.

Sometime before the second half of 2019, Huawei also confirmed it would release a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot that is capable of 5G speeds. You can see the presentation via Neil Shah’s Twitter posting below.

What’s interesting is that both the future hotspot and smartphone will feature Huawei-designed modems to attain those 5G speeds. The company debuted the Balong 5G01 chip at Mobile World Congress 2018, which is the likely model (or a similar one) that will end up in the hotspot. But as of yet, we have no info on what the future smartphone’s chip will be.

That’s what we know, but what can we speculate? Well, the first 5G smartphone from Huawei might be the Mate 30 (if we assume that the upcoming entry in the Mate series is the Mate 20 due to the Huawei P20 line not being called the P11 line). If you look at the release history of the Mate series, we can expect a Mate phone to drop in Q3 of 2019, which lines up nicely with this 5G announcement.

Editor’s Pick

However, since the first 5G phone will be quite the milestone for the company, Huawei may elect to release the device under a new line. In that case, we would get both a Mate 30 and this 5G-capable smartphone. That seems unlikely, but it’s certainly a possibility.

With the first half of 2018 coming to a close in a few months, we can expect other smartphone manufacturers to start making announcements about their 5G plans. It wouldn’t be surprising to hear that the timelines of other companies match up with Huawei’s.

What do you think? Will you buy the first 5G phone, even if it’s likely that it will only attain those speeds in particular areas under very specific conditions for at least the first year of its life? Let us know in the comments!

Best GPS running watches (April 2018)

There are plenty of great fitness trackers on the market right now, each of which cater to different users with different needs. Just need to keep an eye on your daily activity levels? Maybe the Fitbit Alta HR or Garmin vívosport will suit your needs. Looking for something even cheaper than that? Garmin’s vívofit 4 or Xiaomi’s Mi Band 2 might do the trick. But if you’re a more serious athlete that needs something a bit more powerful — something that can track your long runs and not skimp on the handy watch features — what are your options? Today, we’re going to walk you through our list of the best GPS running watches on the market.

Related: The best fitness trackers | Which Fitbit is right for you?

If you’re a serious runner and need something that will accurately track your routes, has a big, easy-to-read screen, a built-in heart rate monitor, and of course, a GPS, this list is for you. Some of the options on here are a bit pricey, but that’s par for the course in this segment of wearables.

Editor’s Note: We will update this list as more devices hit the market.

Best GPS running watch

Garmin Forerunner 645 Music

best gps running watches

If you’re looking for the best GPS running watch on the market, the Garmin Forerunner 645 Music is it. Although it has a clunky name, there’s nothing clunky about this watch — it’s packed with features, comfortable to wear, and is actually Garmin’s first wearable that supports onboard music storage.

The big news here is the ability to story music directly on the watch, which means you don’t need to take your phone with you on a run if you want to listen to music. Garmin says the watch can hold approximately 500 songs at one time, and you can also download offline playlists from select music services like iHeart Radio. Once your watch is loaded up with music, just pair it with some Bluetooth earbuds and you’ll be on your way.

This is also a great option if you need a training watch. The Forerunner 645 Music comes with training features powered by Firstbeat, which will help you better prepare for a race by letting you know if you’re training productively, peaking, or overreaching.

Runner-up

Garmin Forerunner 935

best gps running watches

The Garmin Forerunner 935 is another great option for hardcore runners, swimmers, bikers, and triathletes. It provides advanced dynamics to help you improve your runs, such as contact time balance, stride length, and more.

It also comes with a two-week battery life in smartwatch mode, up to a full day in GPS mode, and up to 60 hours in UltraTrac mode. UltraTrac mode is a GPS setting that makes the watch track sensor data less frequently, allowing you to squeeze out some extra battery life if you don’t need all of your data recorded.

It’s a bit pricey, but we really think the high price tag is worth it.

Honorable mention

Garmin fenix 5

best gps running watches

Garmin’s fenix 5 lineup might be jack-of-all-trade devices, but they’re some of the best GPS running watches you can buy today.

All three fenix 5 models come with preloaded multisport functionality for running, hiking, swimming, biking, and more. They all feature Garmin’s impressive Elevate heart rate trackers, built-in GPS (of course), water resistance up to 100 meters, as well as navigation features with a 3-axis compass, gyroscope, and barometric altimeter.

They all also feature a variety of connected features that make these devices true smartwatches. Users can get call, text and email smartphone notifications. All Sapphire models are also Wi-Fi enabled, so users will be able to connect with their home network and upload statistics even if their smartphones aren’t around.

Not crazy about the regular fenix 5? The smaller fenix 5S might be for you. It has all the same specs as the fenix 5, though it’s built for people with smaller wrists and has a slightly smaller battery. Looking for something even more beefy than the fenix 5? The fenix 5X is much larger and comes with preloaded with TOPO U.S. mapping, routable cycling maps and other navigation features like Round Trip Run and Round Trip Ride. The 5X will even display guidance cues for upcoming turns.

Best cheap GPS running watch

Polar M200

best gps running watches

If you’re on a budget, you can’t go wrong with the Polar M200.

This is a waterproof running watch with a built-in heart rate sensor and GPS that will track your speed, distance and route during a run, and will also keep tabs on your daily activity, steps, calories burned, sleep time and quality. This is also a sleek-looking device. In our opinion, it’s much better looking than its predecessor, the Polar M400.

Plus, this device also comes with Polar’s Running Index, which will show you how your running performance is improving overtime. In the Polar Flow app, you’ll get a Running Index score that’s automatically calculated after every run, based on your heart rate and speed data.

Runner-up

Polar M430

best gps running watches

The Polar M430 is a relatively cheap GPS running watch that doesn’t skimp on the features.

It has a built-in GPS, 6-LED heart rate monitor, and a battery that will last up to 30 hours on a single charge. It’ll also display your smartphone notifications.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the watch is its compatibility with the Polar Running Program, which will help guide your daily training and help you achieve your performance goals. You can upload daily training programs to your M430, access strength and core training videos, and even monitor your running progress via the Running Index feature.

Best smartwatch for running

Polar M600

best gps running watches

Polar’s M600 sport watch is the best GPS running smartwatch on the market.

Editor’s Pick

With a built-in GPS, IPX8 water resistance rating, optical heart rate monitor and 4GB of on-board storage, the M600 is quite the feature-packed watch. It also comes with support for Polar’s wonderful Flow app, allowing you to track just about any activity you can think of – rowing, skiing, hiking and much more. You’ll also be able to squeeze about two days of battery life out of this thing, which is impressive for an Android Wear watch.

You can certainly find Android Wear devices for less than the $300 asking price, but the M600 provides much more than other devices.

Runner-up

Fitbit Ionic

best gps running watches

The Fitbit Ionic is the best Fitbit you can buy, period. It’s an incredible fitness and sleep tracker, comes with a built-in GPS, allows you to pay for things from your wrist, and it’s water resistant. If you don’t care about smartwatch features and are looking for a high-end Fitbit device, buy the Ionic.

The software is a bit laggy, but the introduction of Fitbit OS 2.0 brought some performance enhancements to the device. It’s also slated to get quick reply functionality and female health tracking in May 2018, which will make it a much better smartwatch and health tracker overall.

We wanted to include this on our list because it’s a stellar GPS running watch and fitness tracker, though you should know that it’s not the smartest smartwatch on the market.
