15 most common apps and games that aren’t pre-installed!

A WhatsApp app icon closeup on a smartphone. This is the featured image for the most common apps on android
Google Play has been around for a while as has Android itself. In fact, it’s been over 10 years now. Thus, there are actually quite a few apps that achieved true popular over the years. Many call it the three comma club, the over one billion downloads mark is one of the rarest achievements an app can have. There are over a dozen Google apps with this distinction, including popular apps like Gmail and YouTube. However, these lists always have a ton of Google apps and pre-installed apps. It’s fairly common knowledge that Google apps are the most common apps on Android anyway, so let’s not include them and look at the rest of the field instead. Here are the 15 most common apps for Android! The download numbers are estimates, by the way, and not 100% factually accurate numbers. If you want to see our sources, we have them linked at the end of the article.

Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp (estimated 15 billion)

Price: Free

Facebook’s collection of apps are easily the most common aside from Google’s own apps. Facebook (~4.5 billion downloads), Facebook Messenger (~3.8 billion downloads), Instagram (~2.1 billion downloads), Facebook Lite (~1 billion downloads), Facebook Messenger Lite (~100 million downloads), and WhatsApp (3.5 billion) have download estimates almost double that of the world’s entire population (estimated 7.7 billion). That’s seriously impressive work and there’s a reason Mark Zuckerberg is so rich. When you’re not looking at Google apps (which eclipse even these gargantuan download numbers), Facebook’s properties are easily the second most common and popular set of apps of any developer on Google Play, period, and these numbers don’t even account for iOS downloads. Facebook’s push into VR with the Oculus also helps, probably.

Microsoft Office and OneDrive (estimated 2.7 billion)

Microsoft is also doing quite well these days with its venerable Microsoft Office suite of apps. Microsoft Word (est. 776 million), Excel (est. 666 million), PowerPoint (est. 674 million), and OneDrive (est. 560 million) would almost all make the list on their own. However, most people download all of these apps as part of the full Microsoft Office experience so it makes sense to put them together. It’s a bit of confirmation bias, though, because everybody already knows that Microsoft Office is insanely popular. The Office 365 subscription also works with Microsoft’s desktop apps as well as its web apps. That probably helps with its popularity quite a bit. These are easily among the most common apps on Android.

Angry Birds (estimated 3 billion)

Price: Freemium
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Angry Birds is a little bit like PewDiePie. It keeps setting records for popularity, but it seems like nobody except the most hardcore fans pay attention to it anymore. There are over a dozen Angry Birds games in total and all of those games contributed to its massive three billion downloads mark. This one might be a little disingenuous. The three billion mark is actually its total download count on all platforms, not just Android. Still, with Android estimates like Angry Birds Classic (~430 million downloads) and Angry Birds Rio (~390 million downloads), the series would’ve made the list anyway. This series has its own Hollywood movie among other bragging rights. The first Angry Birds was also the first mobile game to hit one billion total downloads all the way back in 2012. It’s not really popular anymore, but it had one hell of a run.

Subway Surfers (estimated 1.1 billion)

Price: Freemium
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Angry Birds and Temple Run reached the one billion club first. However, Subway Surfers is the only mobile game with over one billion downloads on just the Google Play Store. The popular infinite runner achieved the feat relatively recently, actually. It received its one billionth download on March 16th, 2018. Its meteoric rise to fame is a tad surprising considering the immense number of infinite runner games, including iconic names in the genre such as Temple Run. Still, it’s an achievement to be proud of. Kiloo, the developer, hasn’t quite matched Subway Surfers’ success with any of their other games, but we think they’re probably making enough money as it is.

Skype (estimated 1.1 billion)

Price: Free with in-app purchases
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Skype is another older app with a lot of downloads from its early days. We rounded up to 1.1 billion so it’s actually a little lower than Subway Surfers. The communication app is an excellent cross-platform experience. You can do video, voice, and text chats. You can also call landline numbers for a nominal fee. It’s not quite as popular in terms of monthly active users. That title goes to apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, GroupMe, Discord, and others. However, we imagine many of Skype’s most active users aren’t on mobile, but on desktop. To be honest, we’re not sure why the numbers dropped off so much. It’s not like Skype can’t do stuff that the other messaging apps can do. In any case, it is what it is and 1.1 billion estimated downloads isn’t half bad.

Clean Master (estimated one billion)

Price: Free with in-app purchases
JUST…DON’T DOWNLOAD THIS
Clean Master by Cheetah Mobile is, by far, the most popular cleaner style app on Google Play with just over one billion estimated downloads. This is one of those cases where popularity doesn’t equal quality, though. Clean Master’s aggressive cleaning functions usually work against the device and we’re honestly not entirely sure how it got this popular to begin with. In its earlier days, it was a good way to remove junk files from places like your download or screenshots folder. However, the addition of a bunch of snake oil functions like the phone booster or CPU cooler simply make this app difficult to recommend. Yet, here it is at a billion downloads. Goodness, what a bad decision so many people made.
JUST…DON’T DOWNLOAD THIS

SHAREit (estimated just under one billion)

Price: Free (with ads)
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
SHAREit is kind of a dark horse on a list like this. The app lets you transfer files between Android, iOS, Windows, and (back in the day) Windows Phone devices. It supports 39 languages, and it shares honors with most apps on this list of being among the most downloaded apps of the last ten years. It was once accused of being spyware by the Indian government, but has since worked with Google to bolster its security and show that it isn’t spyware. Still, it’s insanely popular and Android Rank estimates that it should hit the official one billion download marker sooner rather than later.

Snapchat (estimated 922 million)

Snapchat is one of the world’s most popular chat apps alongside Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger. It has over 900 million downloads (estimated), and its core audience is much younger than most messaging apps. Many of its features are copied by Facebook and Instagram, although neither seem to get that this is closer to a messaging app rather than a social media platform. In any case, Snapchat’s quick rise into relevance wasn’t without its problems and the company still has massive financial problems. It just goes to show that having almost a billion downloads doesn’t necessarily make you a billion dollars.

Twitter (estimated 885 million)

DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Twitter is one of the big two in social media long with Facebook. This should probably be higher on the list. However, Twitter actually has a decent third party app ecosystem that likely affected these numbers quite a bit. In terms of quality, Twitter is kind of awful. There are a lot of angry people on there and it is often a poisonous place with little actual human discourse. Still, being able to share a thought in less than 240 characters makes the platform charming for many people. Plus, it’s one of the few social networks with a predominately chronological timeline and that also makes it good for viewing current events. It’s not a great place, but it’s definitely a common one.

Candy Crush Saga (estimated 885 million)

Price: Freemium
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Candy Crush Saga was one of the most popular mobile games for a number of years until more recent games like Pokemon Go tore it down from the top spot. The game remains fairly popular to this day and its estimated download count of over 885 million would back that up. The game is also given credit (alongside Bejeweled) for starting the match-three puzzle game trend on mobile. It’s a simple, family friendly game with a ton of levels so you can play it for a really long time. The developers boast that players have completed over one trillion levels to date. That’s not a small number. Many remember the horrible days of this game bugging you on Facebook, but those days are gone and this game is still popular.

Line (estimated 792 million)

Line is yet another messaging service on this list. This one is predominately popular in Asia. It’s the most popular messaging app in Japan and it has a good foothold in Taiwan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, and Indonesia. The app boasts over 200 million daily and monthly active users overall. The app features text and video chats along with voice calls. There are also customization options like stickers and a sort of social network. This has the potential to blow up and get even bigger if it can leverage its social media features a little more like the other big dogs. In any case, most of our U.S. readers don’t know Line, but we assure you, it’s quite popular.

Viber Messenger is another extremely popular messaging app in places that aren’t the United States. Statista claims the app has over one billion registered accounts and estimates about 260 monthly active users. Android Rank puts its estimated Android download count at 747 million. It’s surprisingly popular in Russia where it tops out even WhatsApp. The download count seems to make sense as well, as the app hit the 500 million mark back in 2016. However, most of its active users are probably in Russia and surrounding countries, so we don’t blame you if you don’t know this one off of the top of your head.

Dropbox (738 million)

Dropbox isn’t quite as popular as Google Drive these days. However, it’s still one of the most popular cloud storage apps that doesn’t have a whole office suite attached to it. That includes 738 estimated downloads. The app hit 500 million registered users back in 2016. All of this despite being completely censored in China. This kind of breaks our rule to not use pre-installed apps because Dropbox is (or at least used to be) pre-installed on some devices. It’s not quite as common as it was back in the early 2010’s, though. Thus, we think these download numbers are a little bit juiced from the pre-installs, but that’s okay. Everybody knows Dropbox even if not everybody uses it.

UC Browser (estimated 644 million)

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
UC Browser is the third most popular browser in the world behind Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari. It credits most of its popularity to a very localized portion of the world, including China, India, and Indonesia. UCWeb also makes UC Browser Mini, another popular browser with over 100 million downloads. Thus, UC as a whole is probably more popular and common than we’re indicating here. To add some context, Mozilla Firefox has 200 million downloads (estimated) and Google Chrome has an estimated 3.9 billion. So there is quite a gap between UC, Firefox, and others and Google Chrome. However, again, Chrome is pre-installed and UC Browser is not so its download numbers are slightly more impressive overall.

My Talking Tom (estimated 1.4 billion)

The My Talking Tom series is another very popular mobile game franchise. You know this series. You play with an anthropomorphic talking cat. Sometimes it’s Tom and sometimes it’s Angela. The first and second My Talking Tom games have an estimated 1.1 billion downloads between the two of them with My Talking Angela adding 341 million on top of that. That easily puts the whole series above the one billion mark. However, the developers do have over a dozen games so that number should actually be much higher. We have it way down here because the original My Talking Tom only reached 600 million downloads. Still, this is one of the legends in this space, even if it is old and nobody pays attention to it much anymore.

Hey AT&T, stop lying to your customers about 5G

Apple wanted Qualcomm chips in iPhone XS/XR, but Qualcomm refused

iPhone XS Max in man's hand against a white backdrop.

  • An antitrust trial against Qualcomm is happening now in California.
  • During the trial, Apple’s COO claimed that Qualcomm refused to supply modem chips for the latest round of iPhones.
  • Qualcomm’s CEO also claims that it paid $1 billion to Apple to be the sole modem supplier for iPhones.

An antitrust trial between the United States Federal Trade Commission and chipset manufacturer Qualcomm is currently in session in San Jose, California. During the proceedings, Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams took the stand and dished out some notable information regarding the company’s strained relationship with Qualcomm.

According to a tweet from reporter Shara Tibken, Williams testified that Apple sought the use of Qualcomm chips (specifically modems) for use in the Apple iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. However, Qualcomm refused the request due to the ongoing legal troubles between the two companies.

The tweet is below:

If this is true, Qualcomm likely pushed away billions of dollars with the loss of this potential sale of its modems to Apple, one of the world’s largest producers of smartphones.

However, Qualcomm likely made the decision based on the allegations that Apple doesn’t keep up with its licensing payments to Qualcomm. Recently, iPhones have had to be pulled from store shelves in various countries due to the ongoing legal fights between the two companies, as Qualcomm attempts to force Apple to pay back payments on those fees.

Editor’s Pick

Apple ended up using Intel modems instead for its latest batch of iPhones.

During the same FTC trial, according to Reuters, Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf stated that his company paid Apple $1 billion to become the sole supplier of modem chips for Apple. This 2011 deal is part of the reason Qualcomm is fighting Apple so hard on getting licensing fee payments. Under the deal, Qualcomm fronted $1 billion in cash to Apple and gave the company a per-unit discount. In return, Apple gave Qualcomm exclusive rights to supplying iPhone modems.

The FTC, however, is arguing that Qualcomm engages in anti-competitive behavior to keep other chipmakers from supplying to Apple. Qualcomm denies this.

The trial is expected to end sometime this week, although it could go for much longer.

Oppo could unveil phone with 10x hybrid optical zoom on January 16

oppo 10x hybrid optical zoom invite

As the battle for the best camera smartphone heats up, Oppo is bringing a new contender to the battleground. A leaked invitation for an upcoming event highlights the number 10, which appears to be an indicator for 10x optical zoom. The event is scheduled for January 16 in Beijing, China.

Back at Mobile World Congress 2017, we took a close look at the 5x hybrid optical zoom arrangement Oppo showed off on a prototype device. While that arrangement never found its way into a production device, it looks like Oppo might be about to one-up its own achievement!

We expect the camera hardware to include an enhanced version of Precision Optical Zoom technology.

We expect the camera hardware to include an enhanced version of the Precision Optical Zoom technology we first saw in 2017. It is likely Oppo will use a periscope-style layout for the camera assembly. The assembly uses a prism to bend light by 90 degrees. Mounting the camera on the side should give Oppo more than enough space to accommodate the longer focal length. With OIS at the telephoto end, it should be possible to get stable shots even with the image fully zoomed in.

MySmartPrice suggests the first phones to integrate the technology will be the Oppo F19 and the F19 Pro. There are further suggestions that the two phones might have a punch-hole display. Additional specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor. We expect to hear a lot more about this in the coming days with the launch event right around the corner.

Editor’s Pick

Personally, I would rather have a wide-angle lens that lets me capture a lot more of the scene than high optical zoom. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments section.

RCS messaging on Google Fi rolling out today to compatible phones

Google Fi

Google announced today on its blog that the moment Google Fi (formerly Project Fi) subscribers have been waiting for is here: RCS messaging is rolling out now to compatible phones.

According to the blog post, Google Fi RCS messaging will be available on all smartphones designed for Google Fi (Pixel devices, some LG devices, and some Motorola devices — full list here).

If you don’t own one of those, Google says RCS messaging will also work on phones not designed for Fi but still compatible with the service. You can find a full list of those phones here, which includes devices from Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus, HTC, and more.

Editor’s Pick

In either case, you will need to use Messages (formerly Android Messages) to get the RCS features. If you have a phone made for Fi, Messages and RCS will be the default. If you have a phone not designed for (but compatible with) Fi, you’ll need to download and set Messages as your default SMS provider and enable RCS messaging manually (you’ll be prompted to do so, no need to search for a settings toggle).

To be clear, RCS messaging will only work with devices connected to Google Fi service. This means if you use Google Fi and text someone who does not, RCS features will not work. RCS features also will not work if you communicate with a Fi subscriber but they do not have Messages set as their default SMS client and RCS messaging enabled.

RCS messaging enables advanced features for texting, such as read receipts, typing status updates, the sending and receiving of large files, and more. Check out our primer for what RCS messaging means for you.

In somewhat related news, Google Fi also will eventually boost international coverage in several countries. These countries currently have Fi support, but will soon be 4G LTE-enabled, which will result in faster speeds when Google Fi customers are traveling abroad. Here are the countries which will eventually have 4G LTE coverage:

Check to see if Samsung Pay is draining your battery, temporary fix is here

Samsung Pay is the company’s mobile payments service which competes with fellow Android-based service Google Pay (and Apple’s very popular Apple Pay). However, it appears that the payment service is glitching out at the moment, causing severe battery drain on Samsung phones.

Users on several Reddit forums (like this one, this one, and this one) are talking about the problem. According to some, Samsung Pay Framework is sucking power fast, with some users reporting a whopping 60 percent drain.

Editor’s Pick

Although discussion of the issue is running hot on Reddit, Samsung has yet to release a statement on the matter. We’ve reached out to the company for comment and will update this article should we hear back.

In the meantime, there appear to be two workaround solutions to the problem. The first is, ironically, disabling battery optimization for Samsung Pay Framework. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Samsung Pay Framework > Battery
  2. Toggle Battery Optimization to ‘Not Optimized’

Alternatively, you can also disable the app entirely on that same settings page. This also appears to solve the battery drain issue. However, if you use Samsung Pay regularly this will make that impossible unless you re-enable the app.

Are you facing this battery drain problem on your Samsung phone? Let us know in the comments, and also let us know if these workarounds fixed it up for you!

10 best Disney games for Android!

This is the featured image for the best Disney games for Android!
Disney is a massive media company. It makes a bunch of stuff and that includes video games. Disney’s video game history stretches back decades across multiple game console platforms. It hasn’t hit mobile as hard as it probably should have, but there are some decent Disney games both new and old out there. Most Disney games are rather simple. Games from Disney properties like Star Wars and Marvel are usually freemium games. However, there are still some excellent mobile games with your favorite Disney characters. Here are the best Disney games for Android!

Castle of Illusion

Price: $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Castle of Illusion is one of the most polished Disney games on mobile. It’s also a port of the classic SEGA Genesis game. You explore five worlds and defeat the evil minions of Mizrabel. The game contains action, adventure, and platformer elements like most classic Mickey Mouse games. You also get hidden challenges, a clean experience, and an auto-save system. We would’ve liked cloud saves and maybe slightly more polished controls. Those are mostly nitpicks, though. The only real problem is the age of the game. It hasn’t received an update since late 2017. We highly suggest opening the game and making sure it works before the refund period expires.

Disney Crossy Road

Disney Crossy Road is a Disney version of the very popular Crossy Road game. It plays a lot like the old Frogger game. Players move a character forward while crossing roads, streams, and other obstacles. The goal is to go as long as possible without being run over or falling to water. This version of the game features over 100 Disney and Pixar characters, including classics like Buzz Lightyear or more modern characters like Rapunzel. It’s easy to play with colorful graphics and simple controls. That makes it great for kids as well as adults. Those who really like this game should also try the original Crossy Road. It doesn’t have Disney characters, but it has a few additional features such as online multiplayer modes.

Disney Magic Kingdoms

Price: Freemium

Disney Magic Kingdoms is a city builder simulator with a fun Disney spin. Players build their very own Disneyland or Disney World, basically. You can decorate the park how you want, build over 100 attractions, and even hire Disney characters to entertain the guests. The attractions are actual Disneyland and Disney World rides. There are also parades, over 150 characters, and over 1,000 quests. This is a massive game with a ton of content. Gameloft also does the non-Disney Ice Age Village and this game feels a lot like that one. In any case, it is a freemium game and some of the freemium elements are truly annoying as per the usual with Gameloft. Still, it’s a family friendly game (as long as you turn off in-app purchases) and the game is fun for at least a while.

Disney Heroes: Battle Mode

Price: Freemium

Disney Heroes: Battle Mode is a mobile fighter with some adventure and gacha elements. Players collect a team of Disney characters and use them to battle against evil. The game features 25 heroes, a bunch of missions and side quests, a story to play through, and character upgrades. It’s a fairly standard gacha battle game. You have very likely played games like this before. Thus, if you liked those other ones, you might like this one. People who don’t like this types of games aren’t going to change their mind for this one. It’s one of the weaker options on our top ten list, but it’s not terrible to play without spending money.

Disney Story Realms

Price: Free / $2.99

Disney Story Realms is kind of a wildcard pick on the list. It’s rather new so we don’t know where the developers will eventually take the game. However, we did enjoy our time with it. It’s a narrative game with puzzle and adventure elements. Players can color stuff in a coloring book, connect the dots, walk around as various characters, and do a bunch of other mini-games. This one is definitely for grade school kids and younger. The game may be too simple or slow for older kids or adults. We do like that it isn’t a freemium game and the mechanics are easy enough. It’s pretty decent and we hope the developers keep it up.

Marvel Future Fight

Marvel Future Fight is one of the most popular Marvel games right now. It’s an action-RPG with some gacha elements. You can collect over 170 Marvel characters from various parts of the Marvel-verse, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Inhumans, Defenders, X-Men, Spider-Man, and others. The mechanics are fairly typical of mobile RPGs so there are no surprises there. There is also an online PvP mode, a bunch of character customizations, and some social elements as well. The PvP is very obviously pay-to-win, but the rest of the game is pretty fun as long as you don’t mind that usual mobile RPG grind.

Marve Puzzle Quest

Marvel Puzzle Quest is another popular Marvel game that isn’t too wrecked by in-app purchases. It plays like most match-three combat games. You get a board with a bunch of shapes and you re-arrange the shapes to form combos. Those combos cause damage to the bad guys while they periodically deal damage to you. The game also features mobile RPG, gacha, and adventure elements. The developers do a decent job of adding new content on a regular basis and there is already a sizeable story to play through. The match-three thing gets repetitive after a while, though, so don’t expect this to be a game you play forever. The grind is also a little annoying in this one, but mobile RPGs are like that.

The swipe gesture controls are easy to learn and work well the vast majority of the time. The free version of the game is a demo. The rest of the game requires a $1.99 in-app purchase. You can also unlock more stuff if you bought the Wreck-It-Ralph Power Pac Mini Figure Blind Box. That’s quite a mouthful. In any case, it’s a fun game.

You level up characters, play daily and weekly challenges, and you can play in guilds as well. It’s another long grind type of game so those who dislike this one may want to try a different Star Wars game. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a decent old game for RPG fans. We don’t normally condone emulator use unless it’s under specific circumstances. As it turns out, old console Disney games are perfect for emulators. There are a metric ton of out-of-print games that are no longer available on modern platforms. That includes old Aladdin and Lion King games as well as classics like Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse, a ton of Game Boy games, a few Little Mermaid games, The Jungle Book, and a ton of others. The 1990’s in particular were a great decade for Disney games. If you can find them on modern consoles, we highly recommend buying them and supporting development. However, if it’s lost in the annals of time, an emulator is about the only way to enjoy them again. Good luck!

Disney develops a lot of its own games and there are several oldies on mobile that aren’t half bad. Some of the titles include Where’s My Water 1 and 2, Disney Dream Treats, Star Wars: Puzzle Droids, and over a dozen Appisode games of varying competence and quality (check the user reviews). Disney also publishes under the Disney Publishing Worldwide name on Google Play where they have an additional half a dozen games or so. The games vary in quality but some of them, like Where’s My Water and Disney Dream Treats, aren’t half bad. Plus, Disney Magic Timeline and similar games often have educational messages or encourage kids to have good habits like brushing their teeth. Hit the link to check out most of them!
