Klipsch throws hat in true-wireless ring at CES 2019

Picture of the Klipsch T5 true wireless earbuds.

The T5 true wireless earbuds announced for CES 2019 are the first from Klipsch

Every year Klipsch has a fairly strong presence at the CES in Las Vegas, but this year the company might outdo itself with new Heritage speakers, five new soundbars, and a new line of in-ears including its first pair of true-wireless earbuds.

Klipsch T5 in-ears

The T5 earbuds stand out thanks to their nifty charging case, which has a similar design to a classic Zippo lighter. It’s especially nice, since most manufacturers have been leaning towards plastic, which isn’t the most impressive material. We’ll have to wait and see if they check all the boxes for what we look for in true-wireless earbuds, but they look promising.

Pricing for these earbuds is set to vary between $59 and $199, but more specific details are unknown at the time of this post. If these sound like something you’d be interested in, then make sure to keep an eye out for them when they release in early spring 2019.

There are four new models in the new the Klipsch T5 line, each sporting the patented oval ear tips Klipsch claims provide excellent isolation and comfort, which is good news for bass lovers as a bad seal can wreak havoc on your low end. If you’re not yet interested in true wireless earbuds, there will be three other versions of the T5, including an active version, professional version, and a wired version.

Heritage Wireless speakers

Klipsch might have some great headphones, but the company is known for its speakers. While there are no images just yet of the new speakers, it’s safe to assume they’ll have the same design language as the models currently available. This means plenty of wood and some classic brass accents.

That said, one of the new speakers, called The Three, is supposed to debut with a new finish. While we’ll have to wait for the show floor to see exactly what that means, it’s exciting Klipsch is continuing to make its classic speaker compatible with modern tech. Depending on the model, these will range from $149 to $499 and will also be available for purchase in the spring of 2019.

Sound bars

Last but not least, Klipsch also announced five brand new sound bars, which will significantly improve the audio coming from the built-in speakers on your TV. They will be between 40-54 inches in width depending on the model, and come with a few features home theater fans will appreciate.

If you want smart assistant functionality Klipsch has you covered, as the new speakers will be compatible with either Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Airplay 2. They didn’t hold back on home theater features either, as you’ll be able to choose between DTS Virtual:X surround sound or even Dolby Atmos depending on how seriously you take your home theater setup.

The sound bars will range from $299 – $1,599 and will be available for purchase in spring 2019, though some of the models won’t be shipping until later this year around fall.

All of these products will be available to try in person on the show floor at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. If you’re not at there, don’t worry — we’ll have a team walking the floor to check out everything audio.

HP announces new Chromebooks, including one with an AMD chip

HP

CES 2019 is turning out to be an excellent event for PC makers to announce new Chromebooks. In addition to new Chromebooks from Acer and Asus, HP has joined the party with some new models as well.

As with Acer, HP is launching one of the first Chromebooks that will have AMD processors inside, rather than chips from Intel.

The new model of the HP Chromebook 14 (via Digital Trends) will be available with either AMD’s A4 or the A6 series of processors inside, along with either Radeon R4 or R5 GPUs. It will have a 14-inch 1,366 x 768 display with a 180-degree hinge, along with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of SSD storage.

The HP Chromebook 14 will weigh 3.40 pounds and have a top battery life of 9 hours and 15 minutes. It will go on sale later in January for the pretty reasonable starting price of $269.

HP hasn’t forgotten about Chromebook fans who want some more power. It also announced the HP Chromebook x360 14 G1 today as part of its CES reveals. It will have Intel’s 8th generation Pentium, Core i3, i5, or i7 CPUs inside, depending on which model you want. It has 16GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage. You can expect a 14-inch 1,920 x 1,080 touchscreen display with a full 360-degree hinge, which allows it to be used as a large tablet. It will weight 3.7 pounds and have an excellent battery life of up to 13 hours.

The HP Chromebook x360 14 G1 will also go on sale sometime in January, but the company has yet to reveal a starting price for this higher-end Chromebook.

LG announces a slew of OLED and LCD displays for CES 2019

LG logo CES 2018 2

With CES 2019 less than a day away, LG’s display arm announced 11 OLED and LCD displays that range from gigantic TVs to portable displays.

First up is the 88-inch 8K Crystal Sound OLED display, which features an embedded 3.2.2 channel sound system. That means sound emanates from the screen itself — there aren’t any dedicated speakers.

LG further expanded its 8K display lineup with a 65-inch OLED variant, along with 65- and 75-inch LCD variants. LG also announced a 65-inch Ultra HD Crystal Motion OLED display with a response time of 3.5m/s.

Next up is an 86-inch electronic whiteboard display that doubles as a huge touch display. LG only mentioned that the display would be available for commercial use. That means the display will likely be available to school districts, companies, and other entities.

Moving to cars, LG announced a 12.3-inch transparent OLED panel with 45 percent transparency. LG also unveiled a 12.3-inch Quad HD P-OLED Center Information Display (CID), but said very little about both displays.

Shifting to monitors, LG announced a 27-inch Neo Art portable display. It sounds like the display wirelessly connects to other devices, though the screen also features a USB Type-C port.

LG also announced a 27-inch Ultra HD LCD monitor with 2.8mm bezels on the top, left, and right sides. The small bezels are thanks to LG’s oxide backplane technology. LG also uses the tech in its 13.3-inch Ultra HD LCD display, which features hourly power consumption of just 2.8 watts.

Finally, LG announced it will use oxide backplanes in high-resolution laptop and monitor displays. LG plans to show off all of these displays and likely divulge more information about them during CES 2019.

Wear OS smartwatches can soon be used to control Whirlpool smart appliances

Whirlpool Smart Appliances

If you own a Wear OS smartwatch and own one of Whirlpool’s smart kitchen and laundry appliances, you should soon get some nice extra features. As part of its CES 2019 announcements, Whirlpool revealed it will be adding Wear OS smartwatch support for its smart devices sometime later in 2019.

In its press release, Whirlpool stated that once Wear OS support is added, those smartwatch owners will be able to control the company’s smart stoves with their wearable devices in addition to being able to see the current oven status.

For its smart clothes washer, Whirlpool says Wear OS device owners will be able to adjust any active cycle on the fly, so you can switch from a normal cycle to one focused on delicates or brights. Finally, its smart clothes dryer can be controlled with a Wear OS device, and users will be able to see how much time is left in the dryer cycle.

Unfortunately, Whirlpool has not announced when its Wear OS support will roll out.

Whirlpool’s smart appliances already support Google Assistant voice commands. If you own a Google Home smart speaker that’s connected to the Whirlpool smart device, you can simply say, for example, “Ok Google, preheat the oven to 450 degrees”, and it will do as commanded.

Google Assistant support will be coming to many more countries soon, including Canada, Mexico, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, the U.K., and India. Other device brands under the Whirlpool parent company, including Maytag and KitchenAid, are also supposed to add Google Assistant support at some point.

Mavin Air-X true wireless earphones pack next-generation performance at CES 2019

Taking the wraps off its new Air-X true wireless earbuds at CES 2019, Mavin now boasts one of the few units employing Qualcomm’s TrueWireless Stereo Plus feature. By doing this, the earphones avoid the most common pitfalls of true wireless headphones, and offer signal strength rivaling Apple’s W1 chip.

A manufacturer render of the Mavin Air-X.

The Mavin Air-X is among the first true wireless earbuds to make full use of Qualcomm’s latest Bluetooth features.

The Mavin Air-X has very small earbuds, weighing just 0.16oz each. However, they pack a lot of attractive features into one unit. They’re IPX5 rated (can take a splash), boast 50 hours of battery life, and have a class 1 (100ft. range) antenna. They even offer support for Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri.

However, the main reason you’d choose the Mavin Air-X over anything on the market currently is because they can use Qualcomm’s TrueWireless Stereo Plus feature. This means a phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 or 855 can connect to each earbud individually, which will bring better battery life and a stronger connection. The Air-X also employs the latest aptX codecs, so you won’t be stuck with AAC or SBC.

Pricing and availability have yet to be announced, but we’ll update this article when we get more information on the subject.

Acer’s new Chromebook 315 hits CES 2019 with custom AMD processors

Acer just introduced the Chromebook 315 during the CES 2019 trade show in Las Vegas. Scheduled to arrive this quarter, it will be the company’s first Chromebook based on an all-in-one “APU” processor manufactured by AMD. Acer typically guns for Intel-based processors in Chromebooks, but the company chose custom APUs for this model to better support Chrome- and Android-based apps. APUs (standing for “Accelerated Processing Unit”) combine a CPU and GPU in a single chip.

Editor’s Pick

Acer’s Chromebook 315 will rely on two seventh-generation AMD A-Series APUs: The A6-9220C and the A4-9120C. These APUs weren’t pulled directly from the shelf, but instead revised to consume less power. That means they enable a longer battery life and produce less heat, making them a great fit for ultra-thin laptop designs. The tradeoff is that you’ll see lower CPU core speeds versus AMD’s original off-the-shelf APUs released in Q2 2017.

Here’s a comparison between the tweaked “c” variants and AMD’s stock A-Series APUs:

  A6-9220 A6-9220C A4-9120 A4-9120C
Process node: 28nm 28nm 28nm 28nm
CPU cores: 2 2 2 2

Base speed: 2.5GHz 1.8GHz 2.2GHz 1.6GHz
Maximum speed: 2.9GHz 2.7GHz 2.5GHz 2.4GHz
Graphics cores: 2 3 2 3
Graphics shaders: 192 128 128 128
Graphics type: Radeon R5 Radeon R5 Radeon R3 Radeon R4
Base speed: 655MHz 720MHz 655MHz 600MHz
Maximum TDP: 15 watts 6 watts 15 watts 6 watts

These tweaked APUs will power an IPS-based 15.6-inch screen with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. Acer will offer versions with touch (CB315-2HT) and without touch (CB315-2H). You’ll also see up to 8GB of system memory and up to 32GB of storage. Given you’ll likely consume most of that storage with Android apps, Acer threw in a microSD card reader to store music, videos, images, and other files.

Acer Chromebook 315

In addition to the card slot, the Chromebook 315 will include two USB Type-C ports (5Gbps), two USB Type-A ports (5Gbps), and a microphone/headphone combo jack. A full-size upward-facing speaker will reside on each side of the keyboard, providing crisp audio versus the annoying muffled audio typically heard with downward-facing speakers. The touch-capable version will feature a backlit keyboard, whereas the non-touch version won’t have any backlighting. Rounding out the multimedia aspect is an HD webcam with an 88-degree field-of-view.

“The Chromebook 315 features a stylish IMR top cover and palm rest that are durable and light enough for moving around the home or office,” the company said in a pre-show press release. “It can speed through demanding apps, while running multiple tabs and extensions, all during a battery life of up to 10 hours.”

Acer Chromebook 315

Acer also notes that parents can easily manage the Chromebook 315 using Google’s Family Link Android app for mobile. With this free service enabled, children can’t install apps and extensions from the Chrome Web Store, view violent and sexually explicit sites, or use incognito mode. There’s nothing parents need to install on the Chromebook itself, as all restrictions are controlled through the child’s Google Account.

Acer’s upcoming Chromebook will measure 0.79 inches thick and weigh a mere 3.79 pounds. It won’t be available until sometime during the first quarter of 2019 sporting a starting price of $280.

Matrix’s new solar-powered smartwatch never needs to be charged

One of the biggest complaints with modern smartwatches is battery life. If you’re buying anything powered by Google’s Wear OS, for instance, you can usually only expect the battery to last a day or so. A company called Matrix is well on its way to fixing that headache. Its new smartwatch, the Matrix PowerWatch 2, is powered by the user’s body heat and solar power, which means it never needs to be charged.

Yes, you read that correctly — using a combination of solar-cell technology and thermoelectric energy, the PowerWatch 2 will never run out of battery. The company’s older PowerWatch X smartwatch also used body heat for power, but that was apparently only enough to generate enough energy for limited sensors. This time around, the PowerWatch 2 has a built-in GPS, heart rate sensor, and a full-color LCD display.

Looking ahead

Thanks to the new sensors, the new watch will be able to track your distance traveled, pace, cadence, steps taken, calories burned, sleep, and more. It can also be connected to Google Fit and Apple HealthKit this time around.

Matrix says it focused on reducing the size of the solar-cell and thermoelectric sensors, so it was not only able add in more sensors, it also managed to make the watch smaller. The PowerWatch 2 is a much more acceptable 42mm in size compared to the PowerWatch X’s 50mm.

As far as I’m concerned, these are sensors that need to be inside every smartwatch. It would especially make a huge difference for watches that rely on GPS connectivity, as those are some of the more power-intensive sensors found in wearables today.

If you want to get your hands (wrists?) on the PowerWatch 2, you’ll need to do so soon — the watch goes up for pre-order today for $200. Once all the early bird orders are taken, you’ll need to shell out $499 for the standard retail price.

This week in Android: CES 2019 is here!

The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off our new year and we’ve got a massive list of what we plan to see. We’ll have a huge team on the ground covering all forms of electronics including smartphones, tablets, TVs, IoT, and everything in between. Will we see a foldable Samsung phone? Will we get any surprises like last year’s Vivo Nex in-screen fingerprint reader? We’ll be bringing it all.

Plus, after crunching the data from our Best of Android awards we found six phones that were cheating benchmark scores in the performance category. Turns out some phones we tested really open the floodgates when they detected a benchmark app running. Fortunately, we thought of that and worked with Geekbench to catch them red-handed. And yes, we name names.

Plus, Apple had a really bad quarter which may indicate trouble in the industry at large, we look back on 2018 by the numbers, and look forward with our 2019 tech predictions.
