ZTE Axon 9 Pro

If you’re looking for the very best ZTE phone, the Axon 9 Pro is the one to get. It’s a flagship device, featuring a 6.21-inch Full HD+ display the Snapdragon 845 chipset, and 6GB of RAM. It also comes with a dual-camera setup at the back and a large 4,000mAh battery.

It has an eye-catching design, although its notch is quite large — as is its chin. The back is made of glass for a premium look and feel, and is curved on the sides to make it sit better in the hand. The Axon 9 Pro supports wireless charging and is IP68 rated for protection against water and dust, but it does not have a headphone jack.

ZTE’s flagship was announced in August and is available in Europe, retailing for 610 euros (~$700). Unlike its predecessor — the popular Axon 7 — it was not released in the U.S.

ZTE Blade V9

The ZTE Blade V9 was announced in February 2018 and packs mid-range specs in a premium-looking body. The handset sports a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display, the Snapdragon 450 chipset, and 3 or 4GB of RAM.

The ZTE Blade V9 offers a stock-like software experience.

The Blade V9 is made of a new shimmering material called “Aurora Glass” and comes in a couple of colors including black and gold. It runs Android Oreo with a skin called “Stock Plus” on top, which offers a similar software experience as Google’s Pixel phones. The phone also sports a headphone jack, a dual-camera setup at the back, and a face-unlock feature.

The handset is available in Europe, retailing for around 200 euros (~$230). Unfortunately, it was not released in the U.S.

Visible quietly adds ultra-budget ZTE phone to its available Android devices

• There’s a new budget ZTE phone available as part of Visible’s wireless service.
• The $99 device is no powerhouse, but looks nice and has some surprising features.
• Visible, a subsidiary of Verizon, has a one-size-fits-all plan which costs $40 per month.

Verizon subsidiary Visible just added an ultra-budget ZTE phone to its very short list of supported Android devices. The ZTE Visible R2 starts at only $99.

It was only a week ago that the company announced Android support on its previously iOS-only network. With that announcement, Visible revealed it will support the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus at first with more devices to come in the future.

Eventually, you will be able to bring own Android phones to the network, but the company is still signing deals with OEMs in that regard. In the meantime, the S9, S9 Plus, and this ZTE Visible R2 are your only options.

Since the R2 costs less than $100, it’s obviously not going to be a powerhouse. The R2 features a 5.45-inch HD+ LCD display in an 18:9 aspect ratio. It packs an unnamed 1.4GHz quad-core processor, a 3,100mAh battery, and 16GB of onboard storage (expandable up to 2TB with the built-in microSD slot). The listing does not say how much RAM the device has, but we can’t imagine it being more than 4GB.

Surprisingly, the R2 does have a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, which is pretty remarkable considering the price of the phone.

The app can already do a bunch of stuff. That includes recurring tasks, notes, smart suggestions, and cross-platform support with Windows 10. Recent updates added task sharing with other people and some other, smaller features. It’s not as good as Wunderlist yet, but it’s certainly getting there. Plus, it’s one of the few decent options that is also totally free.

Tasks is one of the newer to do list apps. It features a gorgeous UI, plenty of customization options, and a decent set of features. Functionally, it works like most other to do list apps. You simply put in the tasks, add due dates and reminders, and complete the tasks when necessary. Some of the other features include multiple lists, a dark theme, and a simple layout. It doesn’t have more popular features like list sharing or cloud syncing. However, not everyone needs those features. It’s still very much in active development, so check the Play Store to see what’s changed between now and when we update this list again.

It’s another solid, simple option that can work very well. In fact, we routinely recommend this app to people who left Wunderlist and don’t want Microsoft’s To-Do list option yet. The premium version adds more features, but the free version should be more than good enough for most.

There’s still hope for net neutrality in the US

Net neutrality advocates actually have something to be happy about today — a federal appeals court heard arguments earlier today against the Federal Communications Commission’s net neutrality repeal. Not only that, but a U.S. Senate Democrat announced he will “soon” introduce a new net neutrality bill.

Judges Robert Wilkins, Patricia Millett, and Stephen Williams heard the arguments for two and a half hours in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. According to Reuters, the arguments revolved around classifying internet providers under law either as ISPs or public utilities.

The arguments also focused on whether the FCC stuck to procedural protocol when it repealed the net neutrality rules in December 2017. At the time, the FCC voted 3-2 along party lines to reverse the President Barack Obama-era classification of the internet as a public utility. Dubbed “net neutrality,” the rules prevented ISPs from offering paid fast lanes or throttling traffic from and to certain websites.

“This wasn’t how the internet was meant to be,” Mozilla chief operating officer Denelle Dixon told The Washington Post. Dixon is leading the court fight against the FCC, along with 22 state attorneys general and several tech companies which include Reddit, Vimeo, and Etsy.

“An internet that enables consumer choice necessarily protects net neutrality. Without protecting net neutrality, [broadband providers] will control the Internet experiences of everyone. And that cannot be what happens.”

In response to the oral arguments, FCC chief of staff Matthew Berry told The Washington Post that the internet has continued to thrive since the FCC’s net neutrality repeal.

“The U.S. Supreme Court has already affirmed the FCC’s authority to classify broadband as a Title I information service, and we have every reason to believe that the judiciary will uphold the FCC’s decision to return to that regulatory framework.”

The U.S. Court of Appeals is expected to make a decision by this summer.

New net neutrality bill?

On one side, the FCC is fighting to keep its net neutrality repeal. On the other side, the FCC might be fighting to keep a new net neutrality bill away from politicians. That’s thanks to U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), who will “soon” introduce a bill that will permanently reinstate the repealed net neutrality rules.

In a statement sent to The Verge, a spokesperson for Markey said the bill would codify net neutrality rules into law. In a separate statement, Markey said the bill introduction was imminent.

“Whether in the halls of the courts or the halls of Congress, we will fight to defend net neutrality. Nothing less than the fate of the internet is being argued in this court case, and we must do everything we can in this historic fight.”

Back in May 2018, Markey was part of a group of Senate Democrats that led a Senate vote to undo the net neutrality repeal. The vote didn’t go Markey’s way and net neutrality was officially removed one month later.

That said, there’s room for cautious optimism this time around. Democrats now hold a majority in the House of Representatives, so passing a net neutrality measure at that level would be much easier now.

Also, most U.S. states continue to push back against the net neutrality repeal — five states issued executive orders to maintain net neutrality, over 20 state attorneys general filed lawsuits, and over 30 states wrote state legislation to retain net neutrality.

That said, Republicans continue to hold the majority in the Senate and will likely be huge roadblocks for any net neutrality measure. The measure might not even be heard since Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) could refuse to take the bill to the floor.

Oops. Samsung Turkey prematurely reveals Gear IconX update

According to Android Police, the FCC and Samsung Turkey inadvertently provided information about the presumed Gear IconX replacement, the Samsung Galaxy Buds, via its warranty page. Not only was the name temporarily public, but an illustration of the charging case’s underside is also available.

While not much else is known about the Samsung Galaxy Buds, the illustration remains available on the FCC’s website and depicts an oblong shape with a charging input. Although, it remains unclear whether its micro-USB or USB-C, we’d be surprised to see Samsung back-pedal from the USB-C charging support seen with the Gear IconX.

According to SamMobile, the earbuds will afford 8GB of storage and better battery life. We’ll be sure to update you as more information funnels through.

Nintendo might be making a smaller and more affordable Switch

With the Nintendo Switch proving to be a runaway success, it makes sense for Nintendo to find ways to continue that run. That continuation might come in the form of a smaller Nintendo Switch, reported Japanese publication Nikkei.

According to the report, the rumored Switch keeps “portability and playing outdoors” in mind and might cost less than the regular Switch. With that in mind, the rumored Switch might do away with the console dock and cartridge slot.

The omission of the console dock would line up with the talk of portability and affordability. It would also help Nintendo recoup some costs since the company sells the dock and power adapter in a separate package for $89.99.

The omission of the cartridge slot is a head-scratcher, however. Nintendo sells the Switch with a measly 32GB of storage, which forces most buyers to pick up larger-capacity microSD cards. Nintendo’s made great strides when it comes to downloadable content and its online service. However, it’ll need to not hold back so much when it comes to storage for this rumored Switch.

In addition to the smaller Switch, Nikkei also reported that Nintendo is working on a new online service “aimed at game enthusiasts willing to pay more.” As with the rumored Switch, the rumored online service could launch sometime this year.

The report arrives on the heels of an impressive Q3 2018 that saw 9.41 million Switch consoles moved between October and December 2018. Even with those numbers, Nintendo slashed its sales forecast for this fiscal year from 20 million to 17 million units. A cheaper Switch and new online service could help Nintendo reinstate its original forecast and even surpass it, though it’s all speculation for now.

Joe Pesci makes rare on-screen appearance in Google ‘Home Alone’ ad sequel

Back when the holiday season was in full swing, Google shared a much-loved advertisement starring Macaulay Culkin in which he reprises his role as Kevin McAllister from the original Home Alone movie.

Today, Google shared a sequel to that ad, this time starring another Home Alone alumnus: Joe Pesci.

Pesci’s presence is notable considering the actor hasn’t been on screen much as of late. His most recent on-screen appearance was in the 2010 film Love Ranch. Prior to that, his most major role in a film was in 1998’s Lethal Weapon 4 as one of his most famous characters, Leo Getz.

How Google coaxed the Academy Award-winning actor out of semi-retirement is anyone’s guess, but it’s certainly good to see him.

The ad is kind of meta, as it appears to depict Pesci and his friends at a Super Bowl party watching the previous Home Alone ad on TV. Pesci points out little details about the ad for his friends and family, seemingly pleased with taking a trip down memory lane.

At the end of the ad, a recording of Pesci’s line from Home Alone is played, and Pesci and his friends all cheer, congratulating him on doing such a great job.

Like the original Culkin ad, this one is very sweet and tugs a bit at the heartstrings. However, aside from the Google tech shown in the Culkin ad, there’s no Google Home or Google Assistant stuff in Pesci’s house. You’d think they would have had Pesci start the ad by saying “OK, Google…” or something.

Either way, it’s good to see Pesci on screen and looking healthy and dapper in his fashionable hat and beard.

Now I gotta go and say, “OK, Google, play Goodfellas.”

Samsung Galaxy S10e press renders leak

So far, we’ve seen leaked renders (and even real-life photos) of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus, but we’ve yet to see anything for the cheaper variant. Today, we get our first look at what appears to be the Samsung Galaxy S10e, via press renders leaked by Roland Quandt over at WinFuture.

The Samsung Galaxy S10e will likely be a little smaller than the vanilla S10 and S10 Plus. It will also likely feature cheaper build materials and might even be missing some functionality present on the other two devices. However, the Galaxy S10e is expected to be less expensive than the S10 and S10 Plus.

From the renders below, we can see that the S10e will likely feature a flat display panel with larger bezels than the S10 and S10 Plus. We can also see it will have a single selfie camera (in a hole-punch cutout) and a dual camera setup on the rear.

You can see that there are three colors with this leak. However, we expect more colors to come when the Galaxy S10e releases, particularly a yellow variant.

You’ll also notice that there is no fingerprint scanner on the back. While we expect the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus to feature an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner, the Galaxy S10e above will likely feature a side-mounted fingerprint sensor instead, built into the power button. You can also see what we assume is the Bixby button under the volume rocker.

Luckily, the render suggests the S10e will have a headphone port, which is certainly good news for many Android fans out there.
